Die Aufnahme entstand bei einem Konzert-Livestream am 18. Januar 2022.
Dichtung und Wahrheit - zwei Gegenwelten, und dann doch wieder nur ein einziger großer Kosmos ohne klar gezogene Grenzen. Der spanische Nationaldichter Miguel de Cervantes zeigt in seinem Roman »Don Quijote de la Mancha« den Irrweg eines eifrigen Lesers, der sich in den Strudel der Imagination reißen lässt und sich zum Amüsement seiner ach so unpoetischen Mitmenschen selbst in die Handlung seiner Lektüre stürzt.
Richard Strauss griff diesen Stoff des »Ritters von der traurigen Gestalt« auf und schuf mit seiner Tondichtung »Don Quixote« ein verkapptes Cellokonzert: Ein solistisches Violoncello - in unserer Aufführung der Artist in Residence des Gürzenich-Orchesters Jean-Guihen Queyras - verkörpert den liebenswürdigen Titelhelden bei seinem sprichwörtlichen Kampf gegen Windmühlen. Zugleich ist dieser spritzige Geniestreich des jungen Richard Strauss ein Beleg für die große Tradition des Gürzenich-Orchesters, spielte es doch 1898 unter seinem damaligen Chefdirigenten Franz Wüllner die Uraufführung.

Brings me to tears each time I hear this finale. Just the most inspiring yet sorrow melody, especially when the entire orchestra joins in to resonate with the cello on the final line of melody. Also how the finale comes back to the main theme and ends with a grand amen makes me realize that life comes back around in a full circle. If there is a beginning, there must be an end, and everyone's end is always ever so humble.

Strauss was a master of tonal colors and knew exactly what he had to do to achieve which effect.

Bravo! This orchestra (Gürzenich-Orchester Köln) premiered this work in 1898. It's wonderful to hear and see the "same" orchestra repeat the work. The live performance was well executed, I wonder if they consulted some (if not all) of the original parts (with notations on the score, I presume) that the orchestra used back in 1898, now more than 120 years later.

Beaucoup d'expressivité dans cette très importante œuvre de Strauss mettant en relief le violoncelle et l'alto solistes , dans la tessiture grave, en rappot avec les malheurs de Don Quichotte et son décès final ,larement ironisés .

Wer ist die Solobratsche im Orchester? Es wäre schön, dies in der Beschreibung zu schreiben. Sie spielt großartig!
J'observe que 2022 est toujours une année de COVID , que les spectateurs sont masqués et que les rangs sont clairsemés ; dommage car la prestation était superbe :, un violoncelliste et une contrebassiste étaient masqués eux aussi , félicitations cependant !
Is it my imagination, or does this work seem like a precurser to "Ein Heldenlieben." ? Similar structures and topical themes, in parts. As w/ most of Strauss, pretty easy to pick out snippets of his other tone poems and operae; he loved to mix and match themes amongst his works.
he quotes the "bleating sheep" from this piece as the critics in heldenleben
@@charlesreed3327 Yes.....good point, but may be bleating sheep in Quixote, but in Ein Heldeneiben, it sounds more like he's farting on his critics.
