Each of the leaders has a gif to represent the full range of motion that they can perform in the game files. When they would need to show a specific emotion, like happiness towards you, they would loop a segment of the gif so that the leader held that face. However, they always started in their neutral pose, so you always had the slow creepy transition to psychotic emotion.
Hope you all enjoy!
And from an Ulsterman!
The outfits changing by era was a great idea, I wish they'd bring it back in a later civ game with less terrifying models and a more imaginative art team.
Humankind does a similar thing with outfits based on cultures, but you get a new culture each era
Yeah
I love how in the Middle Ages, most monarchs are depicted as they actually were.
Very fun detail, but I feel it takes a bit away from the actual leaders figures that represented a specific timeframe of a specific iteration of each respective culture. You can see that most of the leaders look quite generic outside of their respective eras. Fair enough, that's why you mention a more imaginative art team, but it still would be hard to imagine how a representative of an extinct ancient culture would look in modern times or what a person from a modern nation would wear in ancient times, if not some generic togas or animal skins.
Civ IV is I think where the devs really upped their game with making them look nice.
15:05 I love how Modern Ghandi is basically just Ancient Ghandi with a tie.
It's because he'll nuke you back to the Stone Ages.
the ancient version of ghandi in the video game, y'know, how every leader has versions of themselves in different time periods
@Venge Ance h-he meant the ancient Ghandi in the game. Ya dingus.
Hahaha
to be fair that is what gandhi would probably wear
tbh this game deserves an award for giving Montezuma a dartboard with Cortez on it
Hey yeah, I noticed that as well! Is that really supposed to be Cortez on the dartboard?
That would be logical now with the Trump wall. @@BenjinWS
Absolutely
Modern Aztec sacrifice
Trans Flora? Hell yeah!
I love how most of them are smiling forcedly at first, trying to charm you then get all pissed off then cycle back to smiling.
"Hi there neighbor, are you aware that - I AM A ROGUE PSYCHOTIC AI DOOMED TO LIVE IN THIS BODY, CURSE YOU ORGANIC FLESHBAGS - oh, hi Mark"
Bryan the bloke
The intense anger beneath their programming... is immense!
Why did they demote Alexander from a legendary warlord to an accountant? Seriously, it looks like the most dangerous thing he could do come the modern age is tell you it's not in the budget.
Tristan Gritton He joined the IRS.
I mean, lets be real here, that's the most dangerous thing any powerful political leader could do in the modern era.
Greece is represented by Alexander, Alexander is an accountant. Cleary it's an EU inside joke to Greeks and financials.
@@robroux5059 I'm lost. Can you explain?
True lmao, why didn’t they turn Alexander into a general or something
13:42
I like how Modern Isabella has a photograph of Medieval Joan of Arc hanging on her wall.
I wonder why
Haycart why is joan bald tho?
Doge of Venice because cutting your hair short is required for men and women in the French army
Doge of Venice The scene is basically the cover art of the movie G.I. Jane, which came out around the same time.
Can someone explain me why before i assume it's something gay, lol?
Even if I think like many of the players here that the animations are awful, it's kinda cool the developers actually put outfits fitting the eras and the characters. I don't remember it's been for CIV 4 or the others after
Back then they had all these cool ideas and lacked the technology to pull it off correctly, and now that the uncanny valley is gone no one has the ambition to put Lincoln in a tuxedo anymore.
I don't see why people hates this. I really like how they mood change while you trade with them (you didn't even offered the trade when they were annoyed) and how the leaders clothes changed, and not just the advisors.
Yeah, like you remember, when the president of United States wore some Indian fur costume instead of a suit. Besides that, it looks really creepy the animations.
No, just civ 3 did this.
It's unfortunate they never tried again.. With today's technology and software, this could be pulled off beautifully.
@seraphim personally civ 4 and 6 is WAY more uncanny valley to me, this looks good for its time.
They were never given dental care I see.
Or some of them never get a haircut.
Mao got nice looking teeth though
Lol but is probably true because dentists didn't exist back then...
I always wondered as a child why Joan looked like a hooligan in the modern era but now i realize it simply because she is obviously in the Army
She looks like Sinead O’Conner all nihilistic and oppressive
Nightmare fuel for sure
not at all, what are you talking about?
@@Мартичан uncanny valley
Well Catherine is quite hot
@@Milo_Estobar But think of the time this was made. These was CGI in 2001, it was still relatively expensive to make things at the time.
@@Слышьты-ф4ю Nah, she's ugly. Joan is hot. Catherine is hot in Civ 4 though.
Seeing historical figures in period clothing is something I never knew would give me nightmares.
im modern civ 6 or 7 style it wouldve been great but the faces were terrifying no matter which era in this one
Modern Joan d'Arc wears an Army t-shirt with a buzz cut, this is fucking brutal.
From Catholic saint to 3rd wave feminist
Modern Montezuma has a picture of Cortés on a dart board.
MrJedroi258 like a feminist would ever serve her country.
and also have the balls that Joan had. In the 16th century
That's Twitch.
14:46 I just love the Alps poster with Hannibal xD
Javier Rodríguez Good memories XD
The Legend of Logistics, lol
I really liked the idea of putting clothes of different eras on the leaders. It's a shame they didn't implement it in later sequels.
It would be seen as "offensive" today
@@seronymus why?
@@brunonastico because "exotic" clothing and some of the decor and stuff on certain screens would be seen like making fun of "PoC"
@@seronymus I HATE this kind of crap, I HATE being called "a person of color" or "non white", MOTHERFUCKER DESCRIBE ME AS I AM, CALL ME BROWN!!!
These retards insist on being respectful and equal, and yet they see everyone as either white or not white, what's fucking annoying is the people pushing this are white, and blacks are eating it up too, IT MAKES ME ANGRY!!! it's FUCKING ridiculous, I hate PC culture.
You're cool though, my man, stay Pol Inc.
@@seronymus Nobody thinks this lmao. Go touch grass
Just look at all their faces. Even the leaders themselves are horrified at what the animators made!
For the love of God get Mongolia a dentist!
Ur pfp matches too well
🤭🤭🤣
Fun fact: The leaders in the civilopedia appear with the clothes of their actual age.
10:26 Cleopatra looks like she's wearing baby clothes
Yeah looks weird, and her hair wow, in the modern era she wears a wig I guess, it looks totally different
@@enlcashCleopatra is anicent outfit is much more attractive than in any other era 1:41
It feels likes they are either going into a depression or that they’re slowly going crazy.
10:18 Caesar looks like such a dork
Claudius Esperante "Please don't bully me okay my mom will yell at me if i mess up this bowtie"
@Facepalm Full O' Napalm something illicitly gained like some cursed Egyptian statuette
Even his twin brother Hamurabi looks cooler
16:29 Hammurabi might not have known that his land underwent a MAJOR change in the Modern Era, that his land became called "Iraq" and that it enjoyed more of a "military dictatorship" regime. He would be wearing something more "olive green".
"You're not perfect...."
Welcome to the Uncanny valley.
Thanks. Where is the exit?
There is no exit.
Though the graphics sucked, I always did want to know how the leaders looked in each era, for most of the smaller Civ's I destroyed during the medieval age. But still, thanks, childhood memory complete!!
In Civilization III;Some leader should go to the dentist.

there are't any other africans civs in this game
@@willfakaroni5808 Egypt? Carthage?
@@Kirasupporter1 sub-Saharan
For balance in the original game in order to have the same number of Civs from each culture, so it was Babylonians, Persians and Zulu... which seems laughable now!
@@willfakaroni5808Sub-Saharian is still part of Africa
Brennus of the Celts looks like the sort of guy you don't want to run into in an alleyway. Especially in the modern era
LOL
Excuse me but I would have to disagree, you see... the dad energy readings appear to be off the charts.
Modern Xerxes looks like metal guy and Shaka looks like NBA star
looks like all of System of a down morphed into one guy (edit: Xerxes)
Theodora is the only DECENT looking one
Joan of arc looked pretty good too then the modern era hit her like a fucking truck
Would have better if they'd just picked Napoleon to be honest.
@@BenjinWS like in CIV1
@@jxfwliz5ldnheeg well Napoleon isnt even close in controversy as Stalin though
Sid Meier's Civilization III
Introducing:
> Jeanne d'Arc as a French version of Sinead O'Connor
> Bishounen William of Orange
> Cleopatra with hijab
> Tokugawa as a Yakuza Boss
> Hiawatha "The Rock" Johnson
> Abu Bakr the Oil Tycoon
> and many more...
Probably this is the most cringeworthy Civilization series I've ever known.
(Not to mention the uncanny valley).
Also would like to add Weird Al as the leader of Persia.
Genghis Cake the raisin cake.
> Penguin Man, Leader of the Mongolian People
A lot of people like to point out the ugliness and uncanny valley from these faces. I used to play this game a lot as a child, and I don't remember getting scared by them. If anything, this game should be praised for doing face animations, emotions included, as not many games from 2001 even have animated faces. GTA III was released in 2001, for instance.
They're zoomers, man.
@@RetardEd001 unironically calling other people zoomers 💀
@@RetardEd001 Some zoomers have grown up in this time though.
Love how most of the animations perfectly match me when I'm getting my picture taken and they have to get it just right.
10:17 Medic before TF2
Always hated Modern Age Alexander ... his yuppie ass could have starred in "American Psycho".
Let's see Alex's card
Two things:
1- Did anyone notice that modern Montezuma has a picture of Cortez with darts on it?. It's hilarious.
2- Why the hell modern Isabella has a picture of medieval Joan of Arc?. Probably because she's a saint, and she is a very catholic lady, but still...
Thanks for the video!. I always loved this concept of Civ 3 in which the clothes of the leaders changed through history. Too bad it was the only Civ game in which they used this idea.
It is also that modern Mao has his Civ II portrait as the background.
Fun fact : Wang Kon was originally portrayed as a bald man, but later he get hair and moustache in unknown reason. However, If you see his unit in civilopedia, he is still bald.
The reason was that he was too creepy, according to someone who participated in beta tests.
Cleopatra was also black in pre-release screenshots for the basegame, but in the final game you can see in some era portraits that they didn't change her hair to reflect the change fully.
I remember how I burst out laughing when I first saw ancient Lincoln.
a hipster in a Colony
15:54 - Why do Hiawatha has a Polish Palace of Culture and Science in the background? :D
XD co jest kurde
może to jest nawiązanie do tej sceny z kilera, gdzie kolumbijczyk kupuje pałac kultury
JAK PIERDOLE Xddddddddd@@plrafaelpl
I always hoped they would bring back era appropriate clothes. You would visit your worst enemy one turn and suddenly they're all like "Look at my fly clothes, yeah, you know I'm better than you. Know your place peasant!"
And then eventually every single country would send 30+ nukes to every other country and the entire world descends into chaos. One thing Civ3 was good at was creating pre-WWI like alliance webs and starting world wars.
Oh, those were the days.
6:47 Ah yes, very medieval Japanese looking.
Yea, he (author of that video) misplaced ancient and medieval Tokugawa.
Gandhi throughout era
Ancient : a beggar
Medieval : beggar with hat
Industrial : beggar with nicer hat
Contemporary : beggar with nicer clothes
"yo what should we do for [insert wrong-time-period leader here]'s middle ages look?"
"idk, slap a lumpy hat on them or something"
OMG thank you for posting this! Ive been searching this all aroung the internet until i found this..thank you
So are they all having strokes or what
15:27 Khan seized Gadaffis wardrobe.
reported for racism.
Holy fuck this shit is fucking horrifying
Civ 3 really was the worst.
Civ 1 really got it right.
and civ 2 had full body animations. Those were awkward.
Am I the only one here who actually likes the surreal aesthetic of these renders?
I mean tbf the non-human elements work really well. It’s just that 2001 era Cgi makes the humans so uncanny.
16:00 darts with the face of Hernando Cortes))
WTF Modern Joan of Arc 13:23
Av Rand (TheAv66) that is beyond just wtf.
Her industrial appearance looks better in my opinion.
I mean I guess it was their idea of Joan of Arc's whole strong woman ideology.
Yellow vests protest.
I just noticed there was "Armée", army, written on her shirt
Who's the wise guy whose so-called genius idea is to give the leaders appropriate outfit for each age?
It was cool tho
tbh I think it'd be cool if they did it again. But with better fraphics and actual fashion research
CivIII Catherine: kids these days are so rude and lazy! Back in my day...
Civ5 Catherine: basically admits to having a domination fetish in her defeat scene.
Wow my man Gengis Khan really cleans himself up in the end, what a nice lad. This is a great movie
this video terrifies me so so much early civ was so scary i love it thank you
i love civ 3 so so so much
but not as much as SMAC
Gilgamesh messed with my head that most. He’s a mythological figure, a suit and tie looks wrong on him
14:11
When you finally get a reservation at Dorsia
god i love how stereotypically 90s most of of them look on the modern era
Hello Mr. Kyle Smith, its 2022 and I really miss playing Civilization 3 with my great leaders of all time, I go for Industrial Era😁👍
why am i spending my saturday night watching a bunch of various historical leaders play dress-up while having a stroke
I dunno how they managed to fail to put JAPANESE Tokugawa in a JAPANESE kimono in medieval era. Instead of making him look like a northern China warlord!
The idea of era-appropriate outfits was a neat one but man was the 3D implementation horrifying outside of a couple(Blessed Gilgamesh!)
Author of the video misplaced ancient and medieval Tokugawa, not the developers.
Video games came a long way, didn't they?
Unpopular opinion: I'm not freaked out by these at all. Sure, some of the portraits could have been better (Temujin does not deserve this disrespect), but overall I like the style and the fact that the leaders change outfits through the eras.
Also, another unpopular opinion: I love Joan d'Arc being a badass modern military woman. It absolutely fits her.
Mongolia is my sleep paralysis demon
Did they really have to give Caesar that haircut? The 'I'm going bald from the front so I'll try and slick it all forwards' look?
It's authentic though.
0:29 Bloody Hell. Elizabeth looks like a ghost with Ginger Hair.
I can't stop laughing at how unintentionally ominous this is.
Medieval Lincoln just got his hat in India
Medieval Montezuma IMO looks more ancient than the ancient Montezuma
Industrial Henry looks like a generic explorer
Wang Kon looks like a history teacher
The portraits changing by era was a great idea, but it had the drawback of making most rulers look out of place or indistinct in the modrrn era.
I think they should have gone with a concept of your leader changing to a new one each era to reflect the flow of time and changes in leadership ... perhaps with some civs having multiple options for different eras
13:37 Tom Selleck in Magnum
Look! He even give us the "Nuns don't work on Sunday!" Ahh face😂
I swear, I keep coming back to video. It fascinates me with all the unique outfits that they came up with.
I love that detail of every leader has a different appearance for every era, it's a detail that I would love to see in posterior games but I think it's okay this way... pretty disturbing btw, I don't know why im so hypnotized to look it.
PD: Shaka in the modern era has the entire Wakanda Empire behind him xd
i always wished they brought back dynamic era outfits for leaders, hopefully in civ vii
10:21 doeas Caesar look more like Medic or Sniper from TF2 with that look?
I love how Industrial Joan of Arc is wearing a Napoleonic uniform.
I haven't seen so many hateful looks since high school
4:55 and there is how a legendary meme was born!
Its so funny to see ancient leaders wearing suits and fancy hats lol
Abe Lincoln as a barbarian warrior looks even funnier
No one:
Leaders going bald in the modern age:Its free real estate
DAMN, JOAN OF ARC IN 9:09 AND WILLIAM OF OTANGE AT 9:57
Hell, Is she and him trying to Be a Bonaparte??
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
please give me a civ game, with these changing outfits for leaders per era like this, with artwork and animation like civ 5, and gameplay like civ 6!
Wildan Habibi that will make my life...
Wildan Habibi with advisers of civ 2
Unless you use young gandhi.
@Dotagamer They could do some clothing research, and if they can't find any, at least make suits that fit their nature : a Modern William of Orange would be dressed like a politician while a Modern Genghis Khan would have a military outfit rather.
I like that they change up their clothes and backgrounds based on the era
Man we gotta appreciate how Civ IV really made them leaders look aproachable compared to... these.
An early example of excess realism over stylization.
Hannibal in a bowtie is something I want to see more of.
Man you accept how something looks at the time and now 20 years later you're like "woah, this was not good"
No, it's still good.
I prefer Joan of Arc in a buzzcut to Abe Lincoln wearing a suit and tie in the stone age.
They still look better than the leaders in civ 7
joan of Arc in Modern Age looks really funny/silly
They tried to give her a buzz cut, but failed miserably. She is meant to be a soldier (hence the T shirt that says the French word for army and the dog tags)
Why was Shaka Zulu placed with the Middle East crowd? Wasn't he from Africa?
ikr lol
Not to mention South Africa lmao
He's the only non North African civ, and every civ is grouped into a region, so they went with the Middle East .
This reminds me of the Amazon Civ mod with a crazy boob missile leader with all the naked Amazon unit 🤣
elizabeth looks like jeff the killer and tokugawa is bordering on a WWII-era racial caricature
Did the animators back then know about something known as the uncanny valley?
I'm gonna go hide in a dark cave now.
loving the bowler hat/hybrid suit on gandhi
These models and animations have an unspeakably dark and horrifying energy
They all look like they have stroke face when they get mad
I feel like the Ancient and Medieval portraits for Tokugawa are backwards.
Your correct
my girl theodora looking fresh in every game
Why Industrial Mao why he should be in his iconic communist uniform just why... (other asian countries are done pretty well then though. Both Japan and Korea has the costumes that were contemporary back then)
What? Isn't he in his uniform in modern era, which is logical, because modern era is 20-21 century. And for modern era they used Manchu imperial clothes, if I understand that outfit correctly.
15:06 you're screwed.
I remeber i kept asking cesar for gold and he went to war
