For practical purposes you don't need to know all about the nakshatras, you use the lord of the nakshatra. The nakshatra on the house cusp is also of fundamental purpose.

michael neely, since astrology is a observational science certain planets appear as if they are stationary before and after being retrograde. this phenomenon is very well explained in his book "the art and practice of ancient Hindu astrology" by james braha. hope this helped you.
The nakshatra lord is like the root of the tree. If a planet is well placed but the nashatra lord is weak or afflicted it can be a great problem. It can undermine the whole chart.
By not using the nakshatras James is only half an astrologer. I knew a client of his and she had suffered great misfortune after James had promised her a golden Jupiter mahadasha. By not using the nakshatras his reading was wrong- very wrong and this poor women felt cheated and taken for a ride.

30:15 I have 9th lord mars sitting in the 2nd house and 11th lord mercury in the 11th house does that count?
