Who is this interviewer? He's so great, I love how he just sits there and actually listens, instead of interrupting the guests, or trying to say something funny or clever. It's like it's an actual conversation. Makes me realize how fake most talk shows actually are (in the sense that they are nothing like a real dialogue between two people). Very refreshing! Thank you.

There's a series on youtube with Paul F Tompkins as the host (the channel is "Made Man", the series is "Speakeasy"; the second half was some other guy, but PFT hosted the first half or so) who similarly stands out to me as such an impressive, thoughtful, patient host.

Several really good ones, this one with John Mulaney and the one with Bill Hader stand out as particularly good.
Hearing him talk about this process makes me want to become an actor - he always goes to a deeper level than the vast majority of performers in interviews, while remaining brilliantly articulate and concise.

@@ShwetaChatterjee I would argue that one must posses a capacity for intelligence and self-awareness, but the two aren't the same.
His passion comes thru so clearly. He went thru a real drought in his career but it appears he's just said fuck it to careerism & ideas of hollywood "success" & he's just throwing himself into roles & films he's passionate about. The result being some really stellar performances. I hope he gets his second act, where he's recognized for his talent again.

Definitely hit the Camus books hard - Absurdity in what he is doing, going along with it, and finding joy in it. Sounds like a Sisyphean existence, to me!
The character Jake was playing in Jarhead was at one point in the film reading a book by Camus! Definitely a film worth watching, if you haven't seen it already

Yeah, I like these interviews because it shows people in what feels like an honest light. I like what he says about the subconscious. I am always training my subconscious mind in whatever I am doing in preparation for what comes next.

These interviews are like the next "Inside the Actor's Studio". They're so authentic! These actors have totally dropped their guards.
luke gilmour these and hot ones seriously brings actors finally down to normal everyday humans. I think in a way they enjoy that because sometimes being glamorized is just to fucking much
But without the arrogance. I like inside the actors studio but host comes off as pretty pretentious.
It seems to me like this is a very effective way to get into a character and story. But I wonder whether many people would be able to do it without losing themselves in a way that would require a sort of recovery afterwards. Really interesting and challenging.

I would love to see Jake go through a process like this. Maybe like a mini vlog. I wanna see how deep he goes into making a connection with the roles hes playing. Also see how he understand and what questions he would ask to help him portray what the audience will see. This process makes it so real!
Nightcrawler and even his performance in Nocturnal Animals were absolutely phenomenal.
The irony is that it might sound to some like he takes himself too seriously, but the reality is exactly the opposite, I think. He knows that acting is just playtime and I think he even feels a little guilty because he gets to do such a ridiculous thing for a living. But if you really listen to what he says, you can tell he's very grounded.
Luxury Brown I have to agree, I think it’s very obvious he’s grounded and I think he takes his work incredibly seriously and his films can’t really be given the label of playtime but that’s not to say he doesn’t get satisfaction from his work either

I love Jake G so much. I will watch any movie he is in. Nocturnal Animals is a movie that a lot of people didn't see, but was SO amazing.
As a actor I understand what exactly he is talking about .. preparing characters is a tough task , an artistic task that I love ... I love method acting !

If I was an actor that’s exactly what my process would be too, in being a viewer of any film based around true people, events, eras etc I start with one film that effects me and watch and read and research as much as I can that’s related to it afterwards and soak it all in. I also prefer watching films and plays, even concerts alone so I can soak up everything from it and not have someone enter my space or break through that during or after the experience so I can soak up and carry as much of it with me for as long afterwards as I can and I’m certain cases I’ve been able to mentally transport myself back to the experience afterwards with either imagery or sounds relating to the experience and it affects who I am or become in life too especially something of historical significance it gives me an alternative of the world and people and therefore myself and my place in the world, in time.
This makes a lot of sense and I want to be an actor now😂

This is hardly restricted to acting. Countless people do the same, yet are not as visible as a famous actor. But, yea, he's totally on-point. There's a groove - a cadence - aligned with success. And it doesn't need to involve financial prosperity or celebrity. In fact, it rarely does. But those that find it keep on pushing in their own sphere... often silently influencing the greater world in immeasurable ways.

We can command our cells like a powerful leader but few do it. I have discovered through music and rhythm and dance and fasting that I can meld into another person overnight. I can go out and be a lion or be a lamb, be a leader or a follower, I've lived many lives because I realized that all matter including of humans can be transformed at will.

Most of these interviews the actors come from backgrounds within the industry. Worked well for his sister too that little foot in the door.
1:09 the way I understood that is that he wants to dedicate himself so much, drain himself, etc, to the point where it's not "too easy" (I would imagine it isn't easy regardless, haha, but perhaps for some it is), or, rather, that it feels less absurd, haha, that it feels more laborious...someone I know sometimes wonders about all people in art, and even in many (useless, so to speak) branches of science, or mathematics, how they don't feel like it's all pointless, at least at times, haha, given that it doesn't help people, etc, that it doesn't really change the world, etc...that art, and many sciences, or things like chess or sports, don't really "do" anything, haha, can be argued to be useless...but, then, haha, I mean, are they really?...The most "primitive" of societies have always had art in some form...cavemen were already drawing cave paintings (well, maybe they had some religious function, and people don't feel like religion is...useless...from their point of view nothing could be more important, haha)...at any rate, not sure that's what he meant by "commit to it to a place where no one can say that it's absurd anymore"...a lot of useless science often yields practical, important applications, etc...of course, haha, one will never find a practical application for Beethoven's 5th...even if it might have a good effect on someone's psyche, one would probably have been able to use some other piece or something, haha...

Might be a sociopath, nothing out of the normal. Sociopaths make the best manager, CEOs, or in this case an actor.
They also make amazing criminals. But let us be honest for a second; all this glorifying of sociopathic traits in individuals is over-hyped. In reality very few "sociopaths" do well in a workplace. They lack the ability to learn from past mistakes, lack the ability to properly plan the future and their incline for risk is bordering on foolishness.
You don´t have to be a sociopath to be interested in how other people act or how to manipulate them even, if you run a company and don´t give a shit about how your employees feel you will depend heavily on having a brilliant business idea or sales skills instead or you will fail. Steve Jobs was probably one, don´t think Jake is though, he obviously cares. Like A LOT.
Jake's mentality is a little unorthodox compared to a "normal" person, but relative to other actors and similarly driven sorts of people I would say he's closer to the norm. I highly doubt that he, or most other actors with a similar level of dedication are actually sociopaths, but they do have to do some pretty wild mental gymnastics to do their job well, and the man does in fact do his job quite well.
Being passionate, intense & charismatic doesn't make him a sociopath. He lacks the intentionality to do harm, the pervasive disregard of others' rights & feelings, that characterizes a sociopath. I would say he's an artist absorbed by his work, exploring a complex subject in complex ways. His job is to study, understand & reflect human beings, & he seems aware of the good & bad. But to me, IRL he seems actually quite compassionate--giving & caring w family, friends, & activism.
