I heard a story about an SR71 asking ATC for clearance to 80,000 feet. The controller said if you can get to 80,000, you got all the clearance you want. The SR71 replied roger, commencing descent to 80,000.

Russian fighters never got that close to an SR-71. That's DCS, a flight simulator.
That plane flies to fast and high for the Russian su 27 simple put the SR 71 IS BADASS.
It might be a sim though. I have no knowledge of that but I do know history. They shot down a blackbird in the early 1960s. You think modern 5th generation fighters can't intercept a blackbird? Wrong.

Yes.... but no indeed
I am a fan of airplanes and the SR-71 represents one of the greatest aircrafts ever made. What a job Kelly Johnson did on this thing. First saw it years ago at the Air & Space museum in Virginia and was awestruck by the length of the Pratt & Whitney engines.
I miss the Air and Space Shows! I remember going to a couple held at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA. That was the only time I was speechless for 4 hours!
My dad was Kelly Johnson’s doctor. We had a big signed photo from him of the SR 71 on the wall in our house
I had the rare and wonderful privilege of seeing her live at Nellis AFB. Gorgeous plane, amazingly built, and she flies like basically nothing else. The only real reason they stopped using her is they didnt NEED spy planes anymore, they had satellites. Damn Shame though... such a beaut.
LOL THE US would never ever let a foreign air force within 75 miles of the BLACKBIRD I PROMISE YOU
Love the SR-71 and I trust you are 100% correct, but I have no MIL experience. What would happen? Would our fighters intercept the SU27s?
Lol no, SR-71s spend their whole carrier flying up and down along the Soviet border while being closely watched by Soviet AD who admired their ridiculously big RCS. There is a reason why these things were hopelessly outdated from the 70s onwards.
Absolutely fantastic all these planes. Sixt gen ramjet and turboramjet engines to reach Mach 4,3 and near space ceiling. Tom Cruise did flew one

The Russian jets did their job. The SR-71 was in a precarious spot throughout all of it. When heat seeking missiles are fired from the ground the SR-71 blackbird has to evade. During all of this footage the SR-71 blackbird was in no place to evade anything even as it tore away it could have been blown up easily.

The SR-71 Black Bird (fitting name) was designed without computers, just slide rulers and Great minds! It was way ahead of its time, and still is! It was first flown on Dec. 22, 1964, and first delivered to Beale AFB, in in Calif., in Jan., 1966. It was retired on Jan., 26, 1990! On July 28, 1976 a SR-71 set two world records for its class. An absolute speed record of 2163.197 MPH, at an absolute altitude record of 85,068.997 feet!

@@maddhatter3564, Yea, no one really knows! They say it can bounce off the top of earth atmosphere, but cant make it into space! It ain't going fast enough to leave ! Need a thousand fighters,,, need 10 Blackbirds. Cost is not a factor! I could only guess but , all speeds are the safe speeds for our fighters to cruise at. But need be to get out of a hostile environment, they could keep it full afterburner, go from mach 2, hit mach 3 , fry the engines, and still not hurt the airframe. Technically fighters also outrun missiles if they're outside the MAR, as long as they can dive to the deck and give the missiles a few turns they can run it out of energy before it reaches them. The MAR (Minimum Abort Range) depends on the missile and several other factors, but the MAR for an AIM-120C-7 is of the order of 10 nautical miles on the deck, even though its range might be 65 or more nautical miles. They really don't like too much atmosphere, just gets in the way.
@@FrostSpike Not so much atmosphere density as what he is talking about is how loose the aircraft had to be when cold so that it had room to expand when at full operating temperature.
SR71: keep up kid, *hit afterburner*
*free birds starts playing*
That wasn't hitting the afterburner, that was them moving the throttle from Idol to about 30%

Yes, no doubt a fab!
Right. The amount of people on here believing that an SR-71 would EVER let foreign aircraft near it is insane. They'd be Mach Jesus as soon as there was a blip of anything
The dimensions seem off. The SR-71 seems to be large. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
@@jacobellis750 SR-71 is 105 feet and SU-27 is 71 feet in lenth. The Blackbird is about 50% longer.
In a hanger somewhere "the kid" is chewing on the doors trying to break out😂
"Would YOU intercept me?"😂
SR-71 operational ceiling: 89,000 ft (27 Km)
Su-27 operational ceiling: 59,000 ft (18 Km)
SR-71 needs to climb a bit to lose its tail.
"...you were only waiting for this moment to arrive....blackbird, fly...."
Timeless Beatles.
The American pilot replied "I'll race you to 85,000 feet." LoL
Its a SIMULATOR called "Digital Combat Simulator World" Stop arguing about supremacy of the air, one of you know what your talking about
It is rated at 85000 compared to 5600 though.
Missiles can take down satellites. Quack.
@@terryparker1925 Hey... weapons genius... tell us again, what Russian fighter jet mounted missile can fly beyond 20mi AMS... I would be curious which one can reach defense satellites at 1,200+ miles... quack.
@@marcspaz Russia shot down a satellite last November 15 numps. The missile reached 17,000 mph. Hush, child. You're outing yourself. You`re an easy target.
