Regarding whether Young Frankenstein would work to day, I don't think so either. But not because Mary Shelley isn't being taught. Young Frankenstein was an affectionate comedic spin on Universal Studios' Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein. Before the 2000's-ish when the internet became what it is now, people watched broadcast television, which in major US cities at least, included multiple non-network independent stations. Those stations lived off syndicated TV shows (Star Trek, for example), and old movies they would pick up cheap. The Universal Horror films were among them. The number of people in the US that had never seen at least Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein would round to zero. Today, you would have to deliberately seek them out. They aren't 40 year old movies like they were when I first saw them, they are 90 years old. And a lot of people won't watch black and white movies period. So how many people in their 20s and 30s haven't seen them now? Probably a majority. If you haven't seen them, I don't think Young Frankenstein would really work. You might get some laughs at pure absurdisms, but wouldn't have near the impact it had a generation before.

Good chat about comedy. By the way, Krakow was the capital of the Czech state last time around the 10th century AD and it would still be a questionable example. Times change. :-D

This was an interesting conversation that I hope you go more indepth on. I'm not quite sure, but I think the decline of using cinematography in service of the joke really declined in the early '00 when filmmakers let improv be the driving element of their films. Mumblecore didn't help either. Is this a correct assessment?
