    Steve Lukather of Toto did the main riff of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" while Eddie Van Halen provided the guitar solo.

    Eddie Van Halen only played on the “Beat It” solo … Steve Lukather (Toto) recorded rhythm guitars … which I believe were already written…

    • @HarryDime

      Yeah that i how it happened! EVH had recorded both the rythm and solo gtrs but there was an issue with the recording of the rythm guitars as i understood and they called Lukather to rerecord the riffs! But in any case the riff was MJs vocal idea!

      @@HarryDime Steve Lukather tells the story about Eddie's solo in an interview with Rick Beato. Steve recorded bass and guitar on the entire song. Eddie always only played the solo, but when he returned the tapes of the demo/first take version after recording the solo, they had been edited/cut by Eddie and were completely out of sync. Lukather and Jeff Pocaro had to re-record the entire song around Eddie's solo and Michael's vocals which were the only usable parts. See the video "Steve Lukather Talks About Recording Beat It Guitar Riff". The Eddie part starts at 4:00.

    • @HarryDime
      @HarryDime  20 дней назад +1

      I have seen this interview and from my understanding, Eddie had initially recorded both the rythm and solo guitars. Then he cut the tape somehow and made it out of sync and then they called Steve and Jeff to rerecord the rythm gtrs. Go to 7:50 of the interview with Rick Beato. Rick says "so you had to redo the rythm tracks after Eddie put a solo down" and Steve says yes. They don't make it completely clear on who did what but from my understanding Quincy Jones wanted EVH to do both rythm and solo guitars so he was the initial choice. Then EVH fucked the tape up by cutting it and taking it off sync, but the rythm and solo parts were recorded by Eddie. Then Quincy decides to redo only the rythm parts with Steve. This might not be 100% true but I cannot find any other source that clarifies what exactly happened.

    The beat riff was written by michael jackson.Eddie played this solo Steve lukather play the rhythm riff

    • @HarryDime
      @HarryDime  21 день назад

      Yes that is true plus a minor detail, that EVH recorded the riff with the solo before Steve Lukather but something went wrong with the transfer of the recordings to the studio so MJs team called Steve Lukather to rerecord the riff!

    I thought Steve Lukather wrote the main riff for "Beat It" maybe he just played it but didn't write it?

    • @jameswaddington174
      @jameswaddington174 29 дней назад +1

      He didn’t write the main riff but played it and wrote the chord bit over the solo. I’d recommend his interview with Rick Beato. He goes into detail about recording it

    • @HarryDime
      @HarryDime  29 дней назад +1

      Nice interview with Rick Beato and Steve. just watched it! According to Steve Lukather the riff was Michaels vocal riff idea apparently which was played by EVH and apparently something went wrong with the tracking and Quincy called Steve Lukather to come rerecord it! 🤯

    • @jimmyjennings4089
      @jimmyjennings4089 25 дней назад +2

      Steve did write the main rhythm riff, ive seen a interview with him saying so and he also had to revise it because at first he was told by Quincy Jones it sounded to heavy and that Steve needed to tone it down a little I think Eddie Van Halen may have re arranged it some so he could fit his solo in like he wanted but you are 100% right I believe this guy just isn't aware of this even the intro right before Eddie's solo was written by Steve Lukather.

    Thanks for putting this together and showing the goods too. I’m surprised Ratt’s ‘Round and Round’ didn’t make the list. Killer riff that’s a blast to play.

    • @HarryDime
      @HarryDime  24 дня назад +1

      You are welcome and thanks for watching! Indeed Round and Round is also a candidate for this list but it was so hard narrowing it down to 10 riffs! I could easily do a top 30 riffs but that would be too much!! 🙂

    Evh didn't write the main riff in beat it. He was called in, rearranged the lead section, and did his thing. If you're going to put out informative videos get the facts right. Stick to playing guitar.
