Joe's signature song is "Satch Boogie" which has the expected fretboard fireworks (and a concept Joe calls pitch-axis theory, though it is really just a series of modes over a pedal-tone). For lyrical melody, "Always With You, Always With Me" was a breakout hit for him. "Summer Song" and "Friends" are upbeat rockers with strong melodies too. These are predictable recommendations, but undeniably wonderful tunes.
The mystical Potato head groove thing. That song made me ask to myself how the heck does he do this lick 3 times: when I heard it the first time, when I read the tab and when I saw it live LOL. What a legend Joe is!!!!!!
agree Flying in a Blue Dream title track one of the most obvious to analyse since it's largely strictly in Lydian. Doug almost certainly heard it at the G3 gig of course. but fun to revisit

Yes he is, and he do very clever stuff with the compositions. When I listen to Satch I get into the song just as I do with Miles Davis, Jobim or, I don't know, Michael Nyman.
He wrote The Forgotten after his father passed as a means of coping with his Dad’s death. I would 100% agree it is one of his best/ most heartfelt gut wrenching songs top to bottom…
I'm a huge Satch fan. I've been listening since Flying in a Blue Dream came out (I was 12). The thing I think sets him apart from other shredders is that his guitar melodies are actually lyrical. You can sing along to them (if you have that range). He has actually stated that he tries to emulate vocalists in his melodies. It's really hard to pick a favorite song/piece because there are so many. This comment would be a mile long. I saw him in St Louis in 2004, paid for the fan experience, and got to meet and greet after the show.
I think, the missing shreds, especially those you were talking about at the end, were a tribute to Joes phenomenal focus on creating an atmosphere musically. The Sahara is a hot, wide and a place where not much happens. I think it did the Desert justice to not overload the song with solos and shreds. Thats what I generally always love about Satriani; I feel like no other musician, let alone instrumentalist, can catch feelings and emotions as well as Satriani can. M pick, if you want to go down that road a bit more, would be "why" from his Album "The Extremist".
'Echo' is a 5/4 piece with a great non-functional harmony chorus section, and 'Lords of Karma' has some wonderful pitch axis melodies, both from the 87 Satriani album, Surfing With the Alien.
Surfing with the alien, crystal planet, flying with the blue dream, rubina, always with me always with you, crushing day, crying, memories... He has A LOT master piece stuff..
Where Joe stands out is when he puts on his composer’s hat, he purely does justice to that and doesn’t let the shredder/ virtuoso in him get the best of it!!
Doug, there are so many outstanding tracks from Joes career that it’s hard to choose just one. Joes brilliance is spread across a very wide spectrum and he always was beyond the metal only tag. Guess that’s why he has continued to keep and make new fans over the years. Please can you review Flying in a Blue Dream and Ice Nine?
Joe can wring a lot of emotion out of melody ("Always With Me, Always With You," "Rubina," etc.), but my vote for another tune by Joe would be "Cryin'" off his Extremist album. For over the top playing with a heavy dose of improvisation, I'd do "Memories" from his Dreaming # 11 release.
Memories would have been my suggestion as well. I particularly like the live version from the Montreux festival in ‘88. To me it showcases what a great lineup that era was with Stu Hamm and Jonathan Mover.
That was my first time hearing this. Hypnotic! Haunting, hypnotic..Jie always takes you on a journey, and just keeps your interest where most instrumentals might lose some of the audience.. If you haven't done already..."Always With You, Always With Me" is Joe's Magnus Opus, as far as I'm concerned, from back in the 80's when he broke. If you only do one (more) Satch song..do this. It's very accessible... immediate melodic hook, and all done inside of 3 and half minutes..and cutting loose at the climax, like you wished for here.
Joe has so much stuff.. There are the absolute classics: Flying in a Blue Dream, Summer Song, The Extremist, Always With Me Always with You, Surfing With The Alien But I there are lots of different ones worth looking: Mountain Song and The Traveler from the album Strange Beautiful Music (more melodic constructions without lots of shredding) Time (best version is from the Live in San Francisco album) Time Machine, from Time Machine (...) Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness - from The Extremist
Yeees!! I’ve been waiting for you to react to Satch! I’ve seen him live three times in São Paulo, one of which was a G3 with Steve vai and Petrucci. And man, there are so many songs I’d like to recommend that I don’t even know where to begin! Take this dive, you’ll love it!
my first reaction listening to Sahara was I could not stop the goosebumps and the tears at the same time, in one word, I was overwhelmed to say the least
Flying in a blue dream, ( the whole album 😉) The Extremist, Friends, Summer song, Satch boogie, The mystical potato head groove thing, Big bad moon, Surfing with the Allen and One big rush. Satriani is awesome. Have ticket for show in april🤘
I can't believe I have wait until April for this new record. I love this song. I love that he ended the song without turning it into something that didn't fit. Really glad you reviewed this sing. Please do more Satriani...at least another 15 songs or so...lol
So many great songs to pick from this superb artist. From " Flying in a Blue Dream " to " Borg Sex" and " Wizards and Wormholes" My all time favorite guitarist. Side note, Steve Vai also performed with Frank Zappa
I still vividly remember my guitar/bass lessons with Joe at Second Hand Guitars on Grove Street in Berkeley. He was so patient yet poured music theory onto me. Modes, modes, modes.
Hi Doug. Love the channel. The song that got me hooked on Joe was back in 1987 when I heard the title track from the album '" SURFING WITH THE ALIENS"....and then again in 1989 the same scenario, title track "BIG BAD MOON". They're pretty electric so have your "Air Guitar" ready. Cheers, Steve.
I love Doug and all his fans! You're in the cool club now! Theory but laid-back! A great suggestion! My next suggestion from Satch that I KNOW Doug will love! Andalusia!!!(starts acoustic ends electric; justifies both tamber perfectly!)
Joe has changed as a composer over the years, becoming more minimalist or economic. What has not changed is his ear for great melodies. He is always on the top of his game.
I love, love his first album called NOT OF THIS EARTH. Much more experimental than some of his later stuff though his later stuff is still solid too. Check out the track named after his wife called RUBINA (hope I spelled that right). Very emotional. Also try HORDES OF LOCUSTS for a more abstract experience.
Agreed - this is probably his most experimental album (NOT OF THIS EARTH). Hearing Doug cover a song like the title track, The Enigmatic, and The Snake (one of my favourites - you can hear hints of Vai and Hammett styles in this one)... aw, heck, the whole album since it is so diverse.
Joe's playing ages like a good wine. He is the only one the shredders from his era that has got better with age. His note choice seems to get better with each offering.
"Ice 9" and "Hordes Of Locusts" are some Joe Satriani tunes to hear his full abilities and have more fun! Be sure to listen to live versions instead of studio, they are more heavy.
The Album that made the biggest impact on me as a creative and guitarist would be "Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards." At the time I saw it as Joe at his most mature in a compositional perspective with spacey synths, contempory jazz keys, and powerfully emotive guitar phrasing. I would reccomend the whole album, but if I had to pick a few, then "Dream Song", "The Golden Room", "Littleworth Lane" and definitely "Wind in the Trees" are must have listens.
I've been a fan of Satch since the 80s and own all of his albums. Despite this, I find myself listening to his 1998 release Crystal Planet far more than any of his other works. Standout tracks are Raspberry Jam Delta-V, A Train of Angels, Lights of Heaven and the title track. There are slews of other good-to-great songs across all of his releases--and even some masterpieces--but these represent how I perceive Joe Satriani from both a songwriting and sound perspective. But honestly, you really can't go wrong with any of his albums. There's always an earworm or an especially thoughtful/surprising composition or just something that makes you smile.
Time from crystal planet is the epic one for me, its got the lot, epic solo, weird melody in the mid section, and finishes on a compound rhythmic idea 👍👍👍
Great choice, Doug! Great new song! My favorite Satriani is "Always With You, Always With Me", but everything he does is outstanding! Thanks for this reaction!
My absolute favourite Joe Satriani tune is Summer Song, it just makes you feel good, a perfect driving tune. Seen some live versions of it too and they were honestly even better than the album recording.
Satch is the most tasteful of all the 80s guitar virtuosos. He never overplays and always considers what he thinks the song calls for, and this track seems to be an atmospheric tone paining of the Sahara. Lots of people have offered great suggestions for other Joe songs: Satch Boogie for something upbeat, Cryin' or Always With You Always With Me for something melodic and emotional, Flying in a Blue Dream for another atmospheric piece,
Hey Doug, Here's a just a few gems by Satriani from his older catalogue which are in my humble opinion a must listen if you are a Satriani fan. It's a tough task picking just a few considering the amount of treasures he's put out over the years. Two from his awe inspiring album, Surfing With The Alien which was inspired by the Marvel comics character the Silver Surfer. The first one is called, 'The Satch Boogie' which is an all out guitar mode fest, one of his classics. Another one from the same album is called, 'Circle's' which demonstrates Joe's incredible talent for transitioning from a delicate and beautifully sounding piece into a bombastic monster rock song that satisfies the hidden wanna be rock star in everyone. A great piece although its a bit short. You should listen to the studio version of Circles when first listening IMHO though. 'Flying in a Blue Dream', the song from the album of the same name has got to be one for your list as well. It demonstrates what I like to call Satriani's inner muse in creating absolutely beautiful and harmonious riffs that you can actually feel in your soul as the song progresses. Its great to see you giving Satriani a try, there's so much more here to explore but that is food for another list to submit for your approval on another day.
Hey Doug, thanks for reviewing a Satriani song - Joe is one of the best! A few of my favorites are Andalusia and Time Machine from the Live in Paris 2010 DVD.
Satriani's "Wind in the Trees" is also a trance-like vibe like this song; but also has the solos you wanted. The live version from "Satchurated: Live in Montreal" has some fun keyboard improvisation too.
Double post for visibility. The song that makes me most emotional from Satch is Cherry Blossoms. Tears were litterally flowing out of my eyes when I saw him playing it live. Very quiet song overall, but one of my preferate of all his guitar sounds. And probably one of lesser suggested song, as it's not one of his "major" hits with his audience. Wormhole Wizard is an other not mentionned a lot, but it's simple bass line is amazingly hypnotic.
I love your videos, Doug! Always great energy and enthusiasm, as a fellow music lover I really appreciate your sage teachings! I also saw that G3 tour, fantastic show.
Thank you, Doug! I've been waiting for you to do one of Joe's for ages. It's love to hear you react to one of the lesser known tracks like Bamboo or Searching. Actually anything by Joe would just be awesome!!!!
The bassist Bryan Beller has also played with Steve Vai, Mike Keneally, and Dweezil Zappa. He's also in a band called The Aristocrats with Guthrie Govan.
'But it's not long enuff' is probably the most beautiful thing I've ever heard about a track by Satch. I confess he's one in a few ROCK artists I can hear paying real attention of what's going on. I had the chance to see him live circa 2015 and I was mesmerised the whole show.
You want a crescendo of emotion, try "the forgotten part 2", that one is a masterpiece. Or if you want an entertaining live performance with awesome melody, shredding and feel, try "why", "crystal planet", Andalucia, God is crying" or "memories" from "satchurated live in Montreal. Those will not get blocked and are safe to react to. In an ideal world you should go for "made of tears", that live performance from Satriani live is of legends, sadly might get blocked unless you get permisson first I guess;-)
I'm so happy you started analyzing Joe Satriani!!! I can't wait to go to buy this album!!!! Please if you can check the live version of Made of Tears from Satriani live!!!!... It will blow your mind!!!!
Doug, If you want to hear Satch play with an great keyboardist, you should listen to "Wind In The Trees" from the Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards album for some amazing, evocative guitar playing balanced by some extremely tasteful ivory tickling by Mike Keneally. The best thing about Joe, the thing that a lot of solo guitarists miss, is that he knows that everything should be in service of the composition. The song comes first. He's as technically proficient as they come and theoretically more advanced than most, but his music is so listenable that you don't realize what harmonic complications he's working with. I suspect you might have an easier time with that than I do. My recomendations: Wind in the Trees, Time (or any other track on the Crystal Planet album), and everything else being recomended to you.
Another one of Satriani's notable former students is Alex Skolnick of the thrash metal band Testament. His solos on many of their tracks are nothing short of legendary, and he also plays jazz as well with his band the Alex Skolnick Trio.
Love this channel. Great analysis from a totally different perspective. The Iron Maiden ones are my favourite. I've been a Maiden fan since I was 5, 40 years this year 😁
Technically speaking, the most impressive song by Joe is Cool#9 in its Live version from the first DVD of G3 project (the one with Vai e Eric Johnson). It must be this specific version, 'cos his performance was even more outstanding and inspired than it already is. Too much precision and control over the feedback technic and another one by which he executes some type of glissando that, in my opinion, is the highest point of that all (in fact, he does this thing two times in this version). You SHOULD react to that, Doug. There's the video in the original channel of him. P.S.: before I forget, in this song he created the best, coolest, melodies using the whammy pedal.
You really should listen to CRYIN'. It is the first song by Joe that I heard, and I'm absolutely in love with that! It's kinda classic, and it's fantastic!
I believe Steve Vai also has a new album out. I saw Vai, Satriani, and Eric Johnson in one of the first G3 events with an opener named Adrian Legg, who plays as much with his tuners as he does with the frets. That whole show was just mind blowing.
I havent listened to anything by Joe pre 1995 in maybe 20 years. Crystal Planet, Strange Beautiful Music and Black Swans get the most listens from me. The newist stuff is of course really good and I'm happy to see him play them live. It's too bad that most people that show up for concerts want to see him shred like it's 1990. I've even seen people fall asleep in the audience. Granted, Joe's music can be ASMR but I really enjoy trying to comprehend how his fingers are making those great sounds.
The new album is tremendous. Give it a listen! Lots of shredding on "Ganymede" and "Tension and Release". He has a widely varying set of styles on this fantastic album!
Flying in a Blue Dream is one you’ll appreciate. It’s in Lydian mode. Also Echo is clever, being kind of a 4/4 medley, but in a 5/4 metre, which creates the echo.
Always With Me, Always With You
Always with me, always with you!
Check out his song Flying In A Blue Dream.
It might not be a fan favourite, but I really love "Strange beautiful music". I got into Joe's music with that album.
I have that in SACD 5.1 and it's excellent.
You can listen to Cryin', Starry night or Revelation. Beautiful melodies
Agree but why not do both?
Kenny Arronoff on Drums !! Wow ,, this is really good !! Thanks Doug !!
I'm so happy you started analyzing Joe Satriani!!! I can't wait to go to buy this album!!!! Please if you can check the live version of Made of Tears from Satriani live!!!!... It will blow your mind!!!!
As a not Satch fan, this song is one of my favorite pieces of music I have ever heard
Doug,
If you want to hear Satch play with an great keyboardist, you should listen to "Wind In The Trees" from the Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards album for some amazing, evocative guitar playing balanced by some extremely tasteful ivory tickling by Mike Keneally.
Satch Boogie, Surfing With the Alien, Flying in a Blue Dream would all be great.
Just want to say I love your channel. Love to hear a real musician's take.
I've been a Maiden fan since I was 5, 40 years this year 😁
Great piece of work!
Finally,a satch reaction
I can't be more happy😭😭
Satriani guested on a song for Ayreon called Get Out Now! It also has Dee Snider singing on it. The song is fantastic and you should listen to it.
You really should listen to CRYIN'. It is the first song by Joe that I heard, and I'm absolutely in love with that! It's kinda classic, and it's fantastic!
All time hero, Joe! 🤘🏻
SUMMER SONG !!!!! by Joe Satriani
Doug that’s why I love Joe. He’s never let his virtuosity get in the way of the song…. I have no doubt live we will get that second solo
4:35 The Oud interpretation is awesome at the middle really good song
Satch is the master of guitar modality. Also this has one of my fave bassists on this track - mr Bryan Beller.
The new album is tremendous. Give it a listen! Lots of shredding on "Ganymede" and "Tension and Release". He has a widely varying set of styles on this fantastic album!
Anyway , thanks for realesing great videos ...👍😎
Listen to Baroque, by Satch. Such an underrated and memorising song !!
Doug: I recommend Satriani's "Cryin´". Spectacular. Warm, full of wonderful melody. From his album "The Extremist".
Flying in a Blue Dream is one you’ll appreciate. It’s in Lydian mode.
Also Echo is clever, being kind of a 4/4 medley, but in a 5/4 metre, which creates the echo.
