This was an excellent survey of traditional Arthurian literature! For anyone else who stumbles upon this video, however, please check out "The Story of King Arthur and His Knights" by Howard Pyle and "The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights" by Sir James Knowles (especially with the fantastic audio narration by Eric Brooks!) These are much more approachable for the average reader (or listener) and provide a great introduction to the vast majority of the popular tales. The Mabinogian, Geoffrey's History, de Troyes's romances, the vulgate, Tennyson's Idylls, and Malory's work are all wonderful, but perhaps best saved for when new readers are certain they are passionate enough to go down the literary and scholarly rabbit hole!
Also, if you prefer more modern novels, there's always The Mists of Avalon (Bradley), The Crystal Cave (Stewart), The Skystone (Whyte), and Taliesin (Lawhead). Each series has several books, but the aforementioned are my favorites. Happy reading!
As a Welshman, hearing the pronunciations was fun. It's interesting hearing Americans say Mabinogion and Gwalchmei. Dai iawn! Unfortunately you butchered the English one lmao 'Monmouth' is pronounced with a hard 'u', so 'Mon-muth' instead of 'Mon-mooth' or 'Mon-mouth'. And no mention of Tintagel?
It's controversial because its a conspiracy to hide Arthur and make him myth and legend, Arthur was a real person, infact there were 2 Arthur's born 250 years apart, there's a famous battle called the battle of badon Hill, there is a place called mynydd badon near maesteg in South wales, Arthur was alive in the 6th century, if you want to know about the real king arthur you should read wilson and blacket books, and the conspiracy works because this wideo casts him as a myth, and as for the romans they were aFraid of the brittons , AND IT WAS THE FIRST ARTHUR WHO CHASED THE ROMANS OFF the second Arthur wasthe one who chased off the saxons
currently listening to this so i can understand my Arthurian lit class better. thank you for this! super helpful!
As a hypothetical, I wonder how the Arthurian legend would look today if Mallory had not written his version/account?
