Yessssss! This book! ‘The unhinged woman canon’ is such a good description, and seems to describe a lot of my favourite books from the last few years. I love that it resists the urge to fully laugh at the absurdity of the character’s situation, but plays with the utter tragedy at the heart of it. Love what you said here about the Kafka-esque elements of it, especially viewing gender expectations through that prism. ‘Lots of wolves…’ 😂
Haha thank you! I agree. It’s seriousness is a major part of why it worked for me. Especially the ending. I hope more people pick it up. And yes, unhinged women is clearly where it’s at. Them words is my cat nip now~
Instant sub. Saw your Beyonce lemonade album in the background and heard the first 30 seconds of your descriptions of the book and instantly wanted to hear your take on more! Loved the video!
I just finished this one, did you also notice Rachel only used quotation marks when Wanda was speaking? I found that interesting and I wonder why she chose to do that
Oh, I don’t think I did notice that to be honest. Though it’s been a while so I might have just forgotten. Doesn’t feel like something I knew though, if you know what I mean. I suppose it would signal that that’s the only reliable dialogue in the book, which is interesting!
Have you read anything by Catherine Dunn? I’ve only read _Attic_ and _Geek Love_ by her so far-hated the former (which is very much an unhinged woman), adored the latter.
Interesting book. Haven´t heard about it before and normally don´t read books like this very much but I might give it a go at some point to try something new... Thank you :)
I've been curious about this book for a while, but the changing into a dog thing kind of throws me. I'm not a fan of Kafka, but it sort of reminds me of _The Vegetarian_ in a way. I might like it, but I might not.
Would you consider Janina from Tokarczuk's Drive Your Plow to be an unhinged woman? She seems pretty unhinged to me, but maybe you and I have somewhat different understandings of that word.

I haven’t read The Vegetarian yet. So I’m not sure. I’ve got it on my list though, seems like it’d be my jam.
@@SpringboardThought I think you will like The Vegetarian
@@CourtneyFerriter it’s coming up soon!

Absolutely. I have an ‘unhinged women’ shelf on Goodreads and she’s in there. Along with Mona Awad books and The Water Cure, The Lightness, and more
@@SpringboardThought Well, now I will have to check out that shelf! 🙂
Basically, like Black Swan but in dog form?
Your voice sounded sometimes a totally different person😮
Oh?
