It's different, unique and pretty cool. I've never seen a uke like this so it's interesting to me. The acoustic sound was so much better than I expected. The onboard effects added to the sound, didn't make it sound overdone, dirty, fuzzy, etc. The effects worked well with the instrument. I'd definitely like to take one for a spin. Crazy case! I know a lot of ukuleles are going the direction of the built in sound effects, and I appreciate the effort, but I prefer the sound of pedals a million times over. I’d love to see these companies concert on a solid body like what Brian Fanning does. Great information Bernadette, you are the best!

Based on your video I bought two of the Lava U Tenor ukes. One for my wife and one for me. I knew that I'd like it. She loves it! She likes everything about it. The sound, the look, the case, how it comes out of the box, the effects, everything. We brought it to our last ukulele lesson and our uke teacher loved it as well. Thank you for sharing this with all of us otherwise I never would have known about it. Very cool!
I just received mine on Friday (Red❤️) and it’s definitely growing on me. It’s a ukulele and not all at the same time. I think the effects lend themselves much better to various finger picking styles rather than strumming. But it’s a fun instrument to play and I can’t wait to learn how to adjust the effects to different songs.

I’m 66 and I think I saw this on the Jetsons in the 1960s. I love it for the travel sound. I don’t think any company will put that much money in the design of a case again, therefore it will probably be a collectors item when I’m dead and gone. The pink one will be in my will💚❤️💛
Hi Bernadette m thanks for the unboxing video. That is way cool , there has to be a speaker inside the body of the ukulele . Many years of studying psychoacoustics and the properties and effects of sound , that is the only way it can be done without an amp. The 'sound- hole' is located and isolated in the upper corner of the body , therefor there must be a small sound transducer in the lower bottom left of the ukulele , near the input jack. Once the effects are activated the transducer ( speaker ) reverberates the sound waves up and through the sound portal. That has to be the only way without plugging it into an amp. Playing guitar , a Strat , and 'cooking' my sound thru amps and effects is a simple task , but this is very unique. Flight has a similar thing going on and they too must have some onboard sound reproducing circuit to create the effects. Take care , Dreamer , ( Gary )

Question: in the video only one strap button was visible (and specifically shown), but not any counterpart on the other side of the body, around the area where the jack is for the cable. The jack itself also didn't appear to double as strap attachment. So does this thing come with two strap buttons, so that it's actually possible to attach a strap? Or do I have to mount a second button myself? Ok, I guess I just found the answer to my question. I watched a short product video on Aliexpress, and it appears that both ends of the strap attach to the same button, making a loop. I've never seen that before, makes it somehwat wobbly to carry it like that, but I guess it works. A second strap button would definitely have been more practical though. But in this case looks like design won over usability. I hope that's not true for other aspects of this instrument.

I'm not sure about the aesthetic; it kind of looks like something you'd pick up at an adult toy store. But built-in effects is a brilliant idea, and I would definitely try one of these out at a store (music store).
This is the coolest space age looking uke, I've ever saw. I love it! I love the effects, they sound so smoothing. $518 Canadian, it's going on my wishlist anyway :)
Mine arrived today charged up in about 3 hours! SO easy to fret, incredible acoustics, and the acoustical "gagetry" (reverb, effects, etc) are lots of fun. The mic--is not a microphone or a gain, and does very little. There's not a lot to learn about the instrument itself, very user friendly. INSANE that the strap is not available yet--it should be packed with one since the button is proprietary. I'm sure it will be just great but another $35 on this already very expensive instrument seems over the top to me. It's beautiful and sleek (I got the black one). The case is definitely a conversation piece, but is pretty much "bad" from the standpoint of not being able to store ANYTHING, except perhaps the usb cable and the useless user's manual in the tiny pocket. The uke fits so perfectly that it's obvious that when the strap comes it will have to be removed to put it into the case. The very smooth body makes this ukulele "slippery" to hold and that makes it very difficult for me. This Lava U tenor--has lots of plusses and a few minuses, but the best of all feature is that I don't have to worry about the wood dryng out in extreme temperature variations. The tuning system is WONDERFUL, easy and the frets and neck size and spacing are absolutely perfect for my hand. I think I'll love it--but for now after only three hours ON it----some discoveries need to be made. (I have five other uks, Oscar Schmidts, tenors (4 and eight string) Donner, and a tiny (delightful) little Makala. I am relatively new player and in it totally and only for the "fun!" Effective advertisng and store owner of a nearby music store persuaded me to try this unique uke.

And Bernadette, you're facilitating my addiction! 😂 Started with a cheapie concert and have just ordered a quality tenor.....AND NOW.......I just gotta get me one of these amazing Lava U ukes! I'd have to pay the uke + shipment + taxes that are by experience around 30% of the amount of the item.... I've checked it, that's more than 100 bucks! That's why I dont buy from the us anymore. Maybe in the Uk it will be available soon, i don't know. Sadly the uke community is not that big here in France so I think we are not a priority to the brands.... it would be great if they were on Amazon France. Maybe you can put a word with them on that !

I really like the effects they are putting into ukes and guitars. This sounds very nice. I'm not crazy about the looks but it could grow on me. The case looks......like a futuristic coffin / pod thing. I keep expecting to see someone in there😂

The uku intrigues me but I have the following questions. How long does it keep its charge? Would it hold for a period of three hours of playing? Can the rechargeable battery be replaced when it no longer holds its charge for a couple of hours?
That is awesome! I love the availability multiple colors. It sound great and it appears to eliminate two pedals (Reverb and Delay) on my board. I don't have a composite ukulele! Spot on Bernie! Yep, I still love my Donner U-Bass too! My newest addition is a Kmise Banjolele that my oldest son got me last Christmas; using it to play Sweet City Woman and Rainbow Connection, two great songs for that rascal.

I went to the link on Amazon and got real excited that online store that I spend thousands on every year doesn't carry that ukulele in concert size, or tenor size. Unfortunately, I struggle playing on Sopranos do too my very thick fingers and large hands. I do much better on Tenor ukuleles. Maybe they will come out with bigger sizes in the future. I'll just have to look at getting an electric uke and hooking it up to an effects amplifier like on my 60 watt Vox amp.
Amazon has the 26" which is the tenor and the 23" which is the concert ukulele. The tenor on Amazon is $399. and the concert is $379. I verified the sizes via Lava Music and just ordered the 23" concert size. The company has answered all of my questions in a very timely manner. I this website review it states no battery. There is one lithium battery and it is included with the purchase.

TL;DR: Do not spend your money on the Lava U, unless you really want to. Don't buy an extremely cheap ukulele either, because that'll hinder your learning. Long answer: Honestly, no, it is too much money to spend on a ukulele to start. I got a Fender California Coast Zuma ukulele that was around 130 something dollars. If you are able to go to a music store, then go to one and test out different ukuleles. The best starter ukulele is usually a concert, but it really just depends on your hand and body size and what feels comfortable to hold. Here are some brands that are really good from what I have heard: - Kala - Fender (from personal experience, I really enjoy my ukulele from them) - Luna It's better to start with a full acoustic, because most acoustic-electric ukulele sound very quiet and mellow (depends on the brand, I have an epiphone acoustic-electric uke, so maybe it's just mine). The reason behind this quiet and mellow sound is because acoustic-electrics have thinner bodies. I recommend watching videos on starter ukuleles, but from personal experience, I really enjoy my fender ukulele. The Lava U selling points are the case, no need for an amp to get special effects, and the design. If you want special effects and stuff, then you can get an acoustic-electric uke and a special effects amp after you've learned the basics of playing a normal acoustic ukulele. In the end, don't buy this, unless you have the money to spend. Yes, it's nice and cool and whatnot, but you can get a ukulele for a lot cheaper while it still being nice. Just remember to not buy something that feels, looks, and sounds cheap. Ukuleles should have a nice rich tone, even if it mellow because of a thinner body. If anyone wants to correct me or write their thoughts about what I said, then please do so. I'll update the comment with better information if I think it should be there. I want to mention that I'm not a professional ukulele player. I got into playing a little over a year ago. I'm not that good, but I do like researching different products.

That uke looks and sounds amazing. I'm not a purist either, I like original ukes with odd shapes and colours. Sadly here in France I can't buy it, and the taxes for shipping from the us are insane

@@BernadetteTeachesMusic I do have Amazon prime but they won't send it to France. Happens a lot. My only option is buying directly on the Lava website. I'd have to pay the uke + shipment + taxes that are by experience around 30% of the amount of the item.... I've checked it, that's more than 100 bucks! That's why I dont buy from the us anymore. Maybe in the Uk it will be available soon, i don't know. Sadly the uke community is not that big here in France so I think we are not a priority to the brands.... it would be great if they were on Amazon France. Maybe you can put a word with them on that !

The uku intrigues me but I have the following questions. How long does it keep its charge? Would it hold for a period of three hours of playing? Can the rechargeable battery be replaced when it no longer holds its charge for a couple of hours?
You should try and compare it to an Enya Nova transacoustic. I'd be curious to hear the differences.

Spot on Bernie! Yep, I still love my Donner U-Bass too! My newest addition is a Kmise Banjolele that my oldest son got me last Christmas; using it to play Sweet City Woman and Rainbow Connection, two great songs for that rascal.

I have 6 ukes, 1 custom, 2 K brands, 1 trusty ole Risa uke stick. And now just like that, I’m back on that UAS!
I went to the link on Amazon and got real excited that online store that I spend thousands on every year doesn't carry that ukulele in concert size, or tenor size. Unfortunately, I struggle playing on Sopranos do too my very thick fingers and large hands. I do much better on Tenor ukuleles. Maybe they will come out with bigger sizes in the future. I'll just have to look at getting an electric uke and hooking it up to an effects amplifier like on my 60 watt Vox amp.
Amazon has the 26" which is the tenor and the 23" which is the concert ukulele. The tenor on Amazon is $399. and the concert is $379. I verified the sizes via Lava Music and just ordered the 23" concert size. The company has answered all of my questions in a very timely manner. I this website review it states no battery. There is one lithium battery and it is included with the purchase.

TL;DR: Do not spend your money on the Lava U, unless you really want to. Don't buy an extremely cheap ukulele either, because that'll hinder your learning.
Long answer:
Honestly, no, it is too much money to spend on a ukulele to start. I got a Fender California Coast Zuma ukulele that was around 130 something dollars. If you are able to go to a music store, then go to one and test out different ukuleles. The best starter ukulele is usually a concert, but it really just depends on your hand and body size and what feels comfortable to hold. Here are some brands that are really good from what I have heard:
- Kala
- Fender (from personal experience, I really enjoy my ukulele from them)
- Luna
It's better to start with a full acoustic, because most acoustic-electric ukulele sound very quiet and mellow (depends on the brand, I have an epiphone acoustic-electric uke, so maybe it's just mine). The reason behind this quiet and mellow sound is because acoustic-electrics have thinner bodies.
I recommend watching videos on starter ukuleles, but from personal experience, I really enjoy my fender ukulele.
The Lava U selling points are the case, no need for an amp to get special effects, and the design. If you want special effects and stuff, then you can get an acoustic-electric uke and a special effects amp after you've learned the basics of playing a normal acoustic ukulele.
In the end, don't buy this, unless you have the money to spend. Yes, it's nice and cool and whatnot, but you can get a ukulele for a lot cheaper while it still being nice. Just remember to not buy something that feels, looks, and sounds cheap. Ukuleles should have a nice rich tone, even if it mellow because of a thinner body.
If anyone wants to correct me or write their thoughts about what I said, then please do so. I'll update the comment with better information if I think it should be there.
I want to mention that I'm not a professional ukulele player. I got into playing a little over a year ago. I'm not that good, but I do like researching different products.
