    A quick overview of covering a straight-edged and a round cake with soft sugar paste (supermarket fondant) using the traditional method.
    The oblong cake, a rich fruit cake has been glazed with apricot jam to ensure the adherence of marzipan. The fondant can be applied directly to the cake without covering it with marzipan if any nut allergies are stopping us from doing so. In such a case, the layer of sugar paste will have to be thicker to mask the irregularities on the surface of the rich fruit cake.
    For the round cake, we have used a Styrofoam dummy cake covered with a layer of cream ( vegetable fat) to ensure that the fondant will stick to the surface. When covering a real cake that should be already coated with buttercream or ganache.
    To complete a budget style of decorating a cake we can use easy methods of crimping and ribbon roses and leaves.
