Kal mera boards ka exam ha science ka aur ma aaj chapter shuru kr rha hu
*Class 10th PYQ'S*
- Q1. What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons? Give one example of each.
- Q2. What is the role of soap in removing dirt from clothes?
- Q3. How can ethanol and ethanoic acid be differentiated on the basis of their physical and chemical properties?
- Q4. What are isomers? Draw the structures of two isomers of butane, C4H10.
- Q5. What are homologous series of carbon compounds? Give an example and list any two characteristics of a homologous series.
- Q6. What is a functional group? Give examples of two functional groups and name the family of compounds to which they belong.
- Q7. What is meant by addition reaction? Explain with an example.
- Q8. What is saponification? Write the equation for the saponification of ethyl ethanoate.
- Q9. What is the IUPAC name of CH3-CH2-CHO? Write the structural formula of the compound.
- Q10. What are the products obtained when ethanol is oxidised by acidified potassium dichromate? Write the chemical equation for the reaction.
solution 👇
- Q1. Saturated hydrocarbons are those which have only single bonds between carbon atoms. Unsaturated hydrocarbons are those which have one or more double or triple bonds between carbon atoms. For example, ethane (C2H6) is a saturated hydrocarbon and ethene (C2H4) is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- Q2. Soap is a sodium or potassium salt of long chain fatty acids. When soap is added to water, it forms micelles, which are spherical aggregates of soap molecules. The hydrophobic tails of the soap molecules are in the interior of the micelle and the hydrophilic heads are on the surface. The dirt or grease present on the clothes is also hydrophobic and gets entrapped in the micelles. The micelles remain suspended in water and can be easily rinsed away, thus removing the dirt from the clothes.
- Q3. Ethanol and ethanoic acid can be differentiated on the basis of their physical and chemical properties as follows:
- Physical properties:
- Ethanol is a liquid at room temperature with a pleasant smell. Ethanoic acid is also a liquid at room temperature but has a pungent smell.
- Ethanol is miscible with water in all proportions. Ethanoic acid is also soluble in water but less than ethanol.
- Ethanol has a lower boiling point (78°C) than ethanoic acid (118°C).
- Chemical properties:
- Ethanol does not react with sodium hydrogen carbonate and does not liberate carbon dioxide gas. Ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate and liberates carbon dioxide gas with brisk effervescence.
- Ethanol does not turn blue litmus paper red. Ethanoic acid turns blue litmus paper red as it is an acid.
- Ethanol can be oxidised to ethanoic acid by acidified potassium dichromate. Ethanoic acid cannot be oxidised further by acidified potassium dichromate.
- Q4. Isomers are compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formula. Two isomers of butane, C4H10, are:
- n-butane: CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3
- iso-butane: CH3-CH(CH3)-CH3
- Q5. Homologous series of carbon compounds are a series of compounds that have the same functional group and a similar chemical structure, but differ by a -CH2 unit in their molecular formula. For example, the homologous series of alkanes are:
- Methane: CH4
- Ethane: C2H6
- Propane: C3H8
- Butane: C4H10
- and so on.
Two characteristics of a homologous series are:
- The members of a homologous series show a gradual variation in their physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, density, etc. with the increase in molecular mass.
- The members of a homologous series show similar chemical properties as they have the same functional group.
- Q6. A functional group is an atom or a group of atoms that determines the characteristic properties of a family of organic compounds. Examples of two functional groups and the family of compounds to which they belong are:
- Hydroxyl group (-OH): It is the functional group of alcohols. For example, ethanol has the formula C2H5OH.
- Carboxyl group (-COOH): It is the functional group of carboxylic acids. For example, ethanoic acid has the formula CH3COOH.
- Q7. Addition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which two or more molecules combine to form a larger molecule. For example, ethene and hydrogen react to form ethane in the presence of a catalyst. This is an addition reaction as shown below:
- CH2=CH2 + H2 → CH3-CH3
- Q8. Saponification is the process of making soap by the hydrolysis of fats or oils with an alkali. For example, ethyl ethanoate is hydrolysed by sodium hydroxide to form sodium ethanoate (soap) and ethanol. The equation for the saponification of ethyl ethanoate is:
- CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH → CH3COONa + C2H5OH
- Q9. The IUPAC name of CH3-CH2-CHO is propanal. It belongs to the family of aldehydes. The structural formula of the compound is:
- CH3-CH2-CHO
- Q10. When ethanol is oxidised by acidified potassium dichromate, ethanoic acid and water are obtained. The chemical equation for the reaction is:
- CH3CH2OH + 2[O] → CH3COOH + H2O

1) this video is the best of all the videos for carbon and its compound because there he is explaining the topic in a very less time which doesn’t make the student bore
2) his explanation is so clear that this chapter in school i felt very tough but after listening this i felt this is an awesome chapter and the easiest one among the other chemistry chapters
3) he is explaining in such a way that it is understandable for those students who are weak in studies and for them its highly difficult to read so he is explaining in a simple language not like other youtube channels or teacher
