I love my Shark. This saved me buying a new one! Never attempted to do anything like this, but if this 68 yr old woman can do it, anyone can!!! Thank you so much!
After my divorce, I was single and living alone. My toilet started leaking where the freshwater tank attaches behind the seat. I did not have money for a costly plumbing repair! RUclips is the BEST place to go and learn how to fix a lot of things! This video is a very good one; some aren't and sometimes you just have to search until you find one. So...my toilet needed a new seal there. Took it apart, got a seal, and put it on myself. No more leaking! 😅 I was really proud of myself 😂. It cost me $10-$20 to fix it. Had I called a plumber, it would have been at least $200-$300. Sometimes as a woman we're left with no choice, but that can be a good thing! ❤
I hate to tell you this but a 68 year old woman will outwork almost any 20 year old in todays mindset.
I forgot the third thing it could be; there is a circuit breaker in that switch, just incase you run over something that jams the roller. Normally if you switch it off, unjam it, manually turn the roller a couple of times, put it in the upright position again, the circuit breaker will reset. If it doesn't initially, make sure the vacuum is off, snap it back into the reclined position and snap it hard into the upright position. Do all of that before you ever start tearing it apart. Great video by the way, I know you did this one several years ago, but it still applies. Thank you.
I thought that the motor that drives the brush was burnt out - so you saved me from buying a new motor and then a new vacuum cleaner. Thanks so much!
You are welcome!
Thank you! You saved me at least $250 from having to buy a new one of these. It's the best vacuum I have ever owned and when the roller stopped I was very disappointed. So I was going to go out and buy a new one, but thanks to you I don't have to!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!
I enjoy fixing my own stuff and this video just saved my Shark lift away from the junk yard. I like the "unit" so it's great to have it online again. I actually consider this an improvement in that I can always turn the roller off with the Bare Floor setting if I want but otherwise I like the roller running even if it's upright doing an odd job. So consider this a big THANKS HANK!
Also, thanks for good production values; good lighting, clear narration, focused, no corny music covering your voice.
Sammmeeee
This worked perfectly. took 1/2 hour and I am so thankful Hank showed where all the screws were. Saved me $300 on a new one.
Just had this problem today. Went searching to troubleshoot the problem and found your video. As it turns out, my problem was exactly as you described. Removed the stupid switch and joined the wires together. Worked like a charm. You saved me hundreds of dollars. Thanks Hank.
Beautiful. Saved one more from the landfill 👍
What did you join them together with . Can I use super glue or something. Obviously not directly on the wires ..- coming from someone who fixed everything themselves lmao
Thank you so much for the tip about the brush. My mother in law was ready to buy a new vacuum. I followed your instructions and it works great again. I love learning on RUclips, and your video made this fix a breeze! 😊
Watching your video, I learned how to take apart my vacuum. The detail about popping the front wheels off to access the last screws was invaluable. I took it apart, everything was clean, and the belt was working fine. Then I got to the part where you reminded me that the roller brush only engages when the handle is in the RECLINED position.
I put it back together, turned it on, and reclined the handle, and the roller works fine. I'm sure it always worked fine. I just wasn't reclining the unit when I was checking it for roller activity. How embarrassing.
BUT, if I ever need to really troubleshoot it, I'll come back to your videos first. Thanks for the clear explanations and for not skipping over the parts (like taking it apart) that other vacuum experts might think are intuitive.
Thank you so much! I couldn't for the life of me understand why the brushes weren't working. I was looking for loose wires that I could have accidentally pulled out, but I couldn't find anything wrong... I thought it was completely banjaxed until I saw this. Thank you for saving me a couple of hundred quid, pal. You're a legend 👍
Thanks so much for this. My wife wanted the roller running when she wanted it to, so bought the switch. Watched a YT video on soldering, then watched your video, then I repaired it. Works great! Thanks again!
Picked this vacuum up from a garage sale for $10. The brush roll didn't work so I assumed a broken belt or the like. Tried to get it apart and...who knew there were screws hidden under the small rollers. I found your video just to learn how to get the head apart and thats when I learned about the OTHER switch. Turns out, that was the real problem. Even if it wasn't, I would have bypassed it anyway...no need to introduce another means of failure. Anyway, it now works perfectly. THANK YOU!
Looking at the view count, you have singlehandedly saved hundreds or even thousands of vacuums from the landfill, as well as saving all of us multiple thousands of dollars!
You are my wife’s favourite guy now!!!!😅 Bypassed the micro switch and all works perfectly!!!! Amazing - thanks from 🇬🇧
This video not only showed me how to open the lower part of the vacuum where the brush is (which is where I was stuck before watching this video) but the broken switch shown in the video turned out to be my problem as well. Bypassing the switch as suggested in the video fixed the problem I was having. Thank you, this was a big help to me!
Mine stopped rolling today and just happened to come across your video! I was about to buy a new one. But then tried what you did with bypassing that switch! I'm off and running again! Thanks a million! 😊😊
Thank you for this handy tip! I just did this to my Shark today after taking it all apart to clean it! I put it back together, and the brush roll stopped working. This fixed it!!
You are a Lifesaver! I’ve pulled apart the head on this vacuum (which I love, regardless) so many times to try and fix the brush roll-just to have it still work intermittently. Never thought to bypass that switch. I’m so excited to get to stripping those wires.
Thank you!
Dude! You made me a hero today to a 92 year old woman! Thank you for showing me how to do this!
My husband and I had to do this yesterday. Saved us a trip to the dump.👍🏾
Thanks
Thank so much for making this very helpful video! I was able to get my Shark vacuum cleaner back in action by following your instructions. Your video was the only source I found that provided a very sensible solution to revive my non-working brush roller. You saved me from buying a new vacuum cleaner. Kudos to you for helping so many people!
Thank you so much! You solved our problem. It was the green switch. Followed your directions and we're back in business! Couldn't take another thing breaking this week as we just had to replace the microwave! Can't thank you enough!!!
glad I could help!
Glad I watched your video. I thought the roller was not working. It was clogged up and I cleaned it but roller still didn't work. Took some screws out but cover didn't come off. After watching your video, I saw the hidden screws under the little wheels. Then you showed that the roller didn't turn unless the handle was tilted back. I tried the vacuum again and found the roller did work with the handle tilted back. Great! It's not tore up. Thanks for the info.

I was hoping to go buy another vacuum today, but decided to look at this video. Great tutorial on what has been a great vacuum. It was easier than it looked after finding all the screws. Might buy another Shark if this ever stop running. And Bob’s your uncle.
Thank you Hank! I opted to just remove the switch’s lever so essentially the same thing and still works great if not better. Easily just switch it on and off with the brush roll button.
Yet another thank you from yet another Rotator owner. It seems that the switch in mine was just stuck closed. I pulled it out & gave it a shot of contact cleaner, and it operated properly again. Super-easy fix!
Thank you for the ease in directions and straightforward explanation! My model nv752 is a bit newer and needed the star shaped bit as well to get it apart (didn't have to remove the wheels) but your fix worked and saved us replacing a vacuum that cost us almost $300 when we got it on sale. I appreciate being able to do a quick fix.
Yea no matter the year all shark vacuums are very similar in how they’re put together. Glad you got yours fixed.
Thanks Hank! We had no idea there were so many hidden screws to get that head apart. We definitely owe you a beer!!! Best of luck!
Hank -- You are the BEST😘 I followed your excellent directions and my brush roller is up and running again! I can't thank you enough. I never would have discovered that screw under the hose enclosure without your help. xo, Rosemary
I got the shark vac given to me I'm glad I watched your video cuz I was about ready to take it all back apart. Now I know there's a switch in there. Thank you for saving an hour of my life!!
Thank You for this video! I ordered the switch, but in the meantime, I connected the two wires to get my vacuum running. It was indeed the switch, and this vacuum is back to doing it's job until the proper switch is installed.
I hope I join the wires together correctly as you left that part out… some of us have never done that before even though it’s electric 101.
Also I have watched your RUclips a dozen times to try and understand just why the green switch is not correctly working. You say that it is doing “what it should”.
My looks just the same but it would be nice to have an understanding of the problem.
Thank you for doing a valuable RUclips.
I just bought several new hepa filters, the foam and felt ones super cheap on Amazon. You can buy different, just about every, part for this model on there too.
Feels like I’m building a New Shark Vacuum!!!
Just watched this video and just fixed my vacuum! Thank you so much for showing how to bypass this silly switch. That’s all it was and now I’m back up and running! And happy.
Oh my gosh I can't thank you enough!!!! I just fixed my vacuum!! I've held onto it for 4 years cause I loved it and swore I would have it fixed. This morning I decided to give it a go and bam it works!! I'm so hyped up! Thank you 1000X
I just fixed mine too. Love the vacuum but the roller had stopped rolling. I thought I was gonna have to trash it but no. Shows what can be done with the right direction!
Thanks for this. I own three Sharks, this NV502 (and my second brush roller just died and I kept the first one just in case), a brand new Vertex which could suck the paint off a car and an NV7000 DuoClean that has never worked well. This NV502 has been a star in our house other than this issue. $6 to get several switches? Awesome! Plus with my two brush roller assemblies I can fix them both and then have one handy when the other breaks again. If I could somehow hack PowerFins onto this I'd never look back.
Thanks so much for posting this Video....used it to understand how to fix our Shark Rotator with the brush not spinning......removed the switch, tied the two wires together....now it works great. thanks so much!
Thank you Hank for this excellent video. I had this happen two days ago, found your video, then early this afternoon two days later, I made the repair on my back porch in the cool weather we've been experiencing here of late while drinking a cup of coffee. Done. It works.
This worked great and my vacuum is working again!! Great job explaining and showing everything. Saved another vacuum from the landfill!
Thanks for posting. It was a very easy fix for me. I just realigned my switch and it worked perfectly. This video saved me both time and money. I was already looking for a new motor but found your video and learned about the switch.
Thanks so much!! It would have taken me FOREVER to figure how to get the vacuum head apart. This way it was only a couple hour job...from doing the repair to cleaning (that I haven't been good at). Now the vacuum works like a charm...a little differently but effective. Thanks again for posting this video!!
Perfect video that solved my problem. I'm really glad you uploaded this a few months before my switch broke. Thanks!
Thanks. Just mentioning that the switch is normally open to prevent the brush roll from operating until the vac is reclined stopped me from having to do any repair, I had cleaned some crud from inside the nozzle around the brushroll snd and thought I broke the vacuum because it wouldn't work laying flat on the floor.
I fixed my Shark NV552 vacuum quickly using this video instruction. The instructions are accurate and easy to follow. Thank you!!
Another fixed shark. Got it for free "not working" and it is working now! Thanks man!
Fixed in minutes thanks to your help, and nothing I try ever works with appliances. Keep it coming. Subscribed.
Man! You helped me pull off fixing my vac cleaner. Major Kudos to you and the video you provided.
Thanks for the video and the link to the replacement switch, you saved me hours more of troubleshooting and unnecessary part orders.
OMG I didn’t even know it HAD a Brush Roll button! My sister gave it to me and the print on that button is worn off, plus she no longer had the manual so I’ve been troubleshooting. Hahaha! Well, all parts have been removed and cleaned and I’m ready to roll - pun intended.
Awesome video. Found that the button on the switch was just stuck. Clicked it a few times and it’s working great. Almost threw it away.
I just took my head assembly apart and found that one of the black wires going into the switch was severed. Reconnected and wrapped the ends and now the rollers work. So, look out for that as well.
Thanks for your video, by the way. I also bypassed the switch, as that seems like a useless feature.
Thanks! Just fixed ours with the defective switch using your video. That switch is junk for sure. Now it works!
Right on! Saved it from the landfill!
Thanks for the video. Wasn't able to take mine apart because my screws were t20 security and didn't have a long enough screwdriver with that bit, but I ended up getting mine working again by simply extending the vacuum as far as it could go and it seemed to have unstuck the switch that way.
I knew that if I refined my search words I would find the video of someone that knew how to deal with this issue. Thanks for the vid. Sometimes I forget RUclips can contain helpful people.
What were your initial searches so I can add those as tags in the settings
@@hanksgarage_ "handle toggle" wasn't getting me anywhere, but I thought it sounded functional, and "intermittent toggling" when I had Shark, Brush, light. Keep in mind I did not have my searches narrowed to videos at first. I don't know if you have Bypass in there, but I am almost positive when I used that term you showed up. Thanks again.
Thank you ☺️ I just wanted to clean the brush area and I couldn’t find all the screws until I watched your video, Thank you
Thanks from me too. Bought a great looking vacuum at a garage sale for $1.00 because Beater bar didn't work. Now it does!!!!
Thank you for the video. This was my first time fixing my vacuum in the six years that I've owned it. I was able to bend the piece of metal on the switch and it works... for now. Eventually, I bet I will have to bypass the switch.
Thanks for this video. It helped me find the brush roll problem. I bypassed it. Now have a working vacuum cleaner.
I know this video is 4 years old at this point, but was able to confirm that the switch was bad with an alligator clip and pulling the wire protector back a couple of millimeters. Thanks!
Yes! That darn switch and hidden center screw. You’re an ace for making this video. ✔️
thank you for saving me to go buy another vac.You explained it well so as my husband knew what to do. He just went to the garage to try it out with the wire nut.Wish it luck. We have the exact same vac with all the accessories in pristine condition.
Thank you. I watched a few videos but yours was the best and thank you. Saved me from buying anything. I had everything to connect wires together at home already
Had the same problem. Bypassed the switch and voila! Worked!! Thanks for the info. You saved me almost $200.
You're welcome!
YOU’RE A GENIUS!
I seriously can’t believe I just fixed this vacuum by myself with this video. Thank you!!
You are da man!!!!!!!! Your fix worked like a charm! Thank you very much! It's people like you that still give me hope for this crazy world! Cheers!
Thanks for the video! I had the lever/tilt switch on this exact model go out for me last week and was able to keep my model going with your help/fix. Appreciate it.
Glad it helped!
Your easy tutorial just saved me from buying a new vacuum cleaner. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much. Shark wanted me to pay $89 for a new base. Your fixed worked. Hardest part was figuring out how to strip a wire. When I plugged it back in it didn't spin automatically. I had to hit the brush roll button. Thanks
yea thats typical. Glad you were able to get yours working.
Thanks so much, saved me from buying a new one, your directions were super easy and it works again
Thanks for the video! I was able to fix mine by just taking the switch apart (it's basically two plastic halves that slide together) and fiddling with it a bit. It had just become stuck in the down position but actuating it a bunch seems to have cleared the problem.
Thank you!!! I was looking at this little switch but thought to check the internet first. Thank you again for the push in the right direction.
I really like this vacuum, so I was peeved when the brushroll stopped working. I took it apart, as per your directions, found the nasty nasty switch, but after fiddling with it a bit (what I assume is a spring within the switch) started to work again. I put the head back together and presto! It worked! I may order another switch just in case the original switch ultimately turns out to be faulty.
Dude, you are GOLDEN! Fixed as you said and works like a charm. Saved me $$$ repair or replace. Thanks man!!
No problem 👍
Mine turned out to be crimped wires from previous owner (brother) replacing switch and tightening chassis back without clearance. This video gave me the confidence to take apart and troubleshoot. Thanks!
Also. Subscribed.
Awesome!
Hey man, just wanted to thank you for this video. Saved me an hour of troubleshooting and possibly a couple hundred dollars on a new vacuum.
Great video and great channel
A side benefit to bypassing the switch is the ability to vac the stairs more easily...without the brush stopping each time I move the upper into a vertical position to get into a tight spot. I can drag the roller unit almost the full width of each tread, then turn it 90 degrees to finish. Couldn't do that with the auto shut off feature engaged.
You are the Sensei of vacuums for sure. Poorly engineered for a switch that will get lots of use. Thanks for the video.
Eh I just link to tinker with stuff thanks for watchin
Thanks man, I have a similar vacuum, Shark Navigator Lift-Away and the same issue started happening on and off. BUT YOUR FIX DID THE TRICK!!! Its actually easier to vacuum the stairs now cuz the brush is always on when I need it!
Yup all shark uprights are very similar. Navigator, apex, rotator. All use this system
Awesome video! Followed all instructions in the video and now my sherk's roller works! Thanks so much!
Magic words;
“ The roller only spins if the handle is reclined” !!!!
That’s was the missing piece of the puzzle.
THANKS!!
I’m so broke right now, I’m sooo grateful for you. Thank you kindly really!
You're so welcome!
Thank you! Gives me hope for how to repair my vacuum without replacing the whole machine!
Happy to help
I just want to say thank you. I missed the under wheel screws and almost killed my vacuum!!!
YOU are the BEST! I just saved a bunch of cash as i was looking at buying a new vacuum! Thanks a million!!!!
Thank you for the video. I took out the switch and it works great. 6-24-24 I love the Shark and would have hated to throw it away.
My brush roll just died. I can’t wait to take mine apart and see if this is the culprit! Thanks for the video! I love trying to fix my own stuff and not just throw it away
Was it the switch? I bypassed the switch the red light went out but also the front lights So I wired the switch back up all lights are back on.I checked the 2 belts they look good the only other part would be the rollerbrush motor
@@cassandrawestfall60 unfortunately mine wasn’t the switch. Never could get it to work
Literally watched this video and fixed it in 5 minutes. Thanks man!
Thank you. I was able to get the old switch to work by repositioning it and bending up the metal strip. Will see how long that works.
I don’t have this shark model and I don’t know if I have a switch down there but it’s worth taking it apart to check and bypass this stupid switch. Thanks for the video, and good tip.
This worked, thank you. We almost threw it away after many other attempts to fix it. So glad.
Awesome. Glad it works now
So happy I found this video! Super easy repair. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your tutorial!!!
The solution was exactly bypassing the rotator switch in the way you showed. Saved me a lot of time and money.
Thanks. I was missing the two screws under the tiny guide wheels. I also suspect my switch is broken, so if so, will wire it closed.
Thanks for this video, I couldn't figure out what was wrong either and assumed it was wiring, didn't even check the switch! Works great now!
I would think it would be that little rubber belt most times breaking that is causing the brush roller to not go, right?
Nope, you had it right. I just took my vacuum apart and that's what it was! Thanks !
Those cogged rubber belts last forever. I've actually never seen one fail; they will outlast the rest of the vacuum in most cases.
yup, you got it! Thanks for the video! @@hanksgarage_
Actually my switch isn't bad the 2 belts on mine are good I'm checking the roller brush motor next
Actually my switch isn't bad the 2 belts on mine are good I'm checking the roller brush motor next
Thank you for your most informative video. I inherited a Shark Rotator, and after working on the non-functioning unit, finally got it cleaned up and work with the exception of the roller, and you pointed out the "fix." Works great. As for the manufacturer, from my vantage point, just another unethical and unprofessional purveyor of overcomplicated crap equipment. Give me a Hoover and a Eureka at a small fraction of the cost. Same performance. Easier to work on. Today's engineers are basically nothing more than obstructionists, designing equipment that fails all too often and ripping off consumers.
You exactly explained my issue with my vacuum, first video to finally get what I was talking about. I’m not doing all this though. I’m going to buy a new one and just get rid of this one to someone who is comfortable with doing this.
Go to a vacuum store and for the same amount of money you spend on a new shark they will set you up with a vacuum that will actually be serviceable.
You just saved me big bucks! Exactly what you said it was. My wife is thrilled! Shark outta pay you royalties. Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
Glad to help, honestly I doubt shark is all that thrilled there are people on YT helping others save their machines from landfills like this. They want people to just buy another one.
@@hanksgarage_ yeah I thought that too originally. After seeing all the comments from others like me who benefited from your video, I realized that you are still ultimately helping Shark out buy instilling confidence back in all of our original choices to purchase a Shark machine in the first place. Easy trouble shooting and repair gives me confidence to buy another Shark when this one kicks the bucket later on down the road. Although in this day and age, your right, Shark probably sees you as an enemy to their business. Either way, you’re a hero in my book! Thanks again
Bypassing the switch also fixed my brushroll. Thanks a ton!! Saved us from buying a new vacuum.
Another reason for brush roll to stop working is the belt brakes. I would check that first as belt replacement should be easy.
Thanks for all your info. What if its not the switch? How can I know if its the motor and not the switch?
Thanks!
