For a working 4:3 aspect ratio Gecko code for Donkey Kong Retruns NTSC check here:
    twitter.com/WobblingP/status/1655949865451675659
♦Please NOTE: You don't need to disable Bloom and other post proccesing effects like in Monster Hunter Tri but the goal of this video is to achieve the sharpest image possible when using analog output and not trying to maintain the original art style of the game.
    1. Works with PAL and NTSC games (disc and images)
    2. Please don't ask me any question about how to hack the Wii, installation of USB Loader GX, homebrew channel or download links for ciOS. ;-)
    3. I never tested the four improvements on the Wii U (vWii). Just try it out. I would expect disabling deflicker filter, 4:3 aspect ratio and Framebuffer fix should work.
    4. Some games like Xenoblade use their own anti aliasing filter which can't be disabled via USB Loader GX.
    5. OFF (Extended) is the option I recommend for disabling deflicker filter. In case the game freezes try OFF (safe)

I got a top of the line RGB SCART cable with CSYNC filter for Wii (only PAL Wii cab make full RGB), and a "elcheapo" Bush TV, 4:3, 480i, and I am confident that is how the Wii (and GC) were intended look like. The 480p must have been an afterthought later in development, and only with 480p CRT in mind. The CRT won't suffer from all the filters and stretches. Of course, if you have a retrotink, power to you. This looks almost as good as a switch. I can't wait to fiddle around with the USB loader on the regular TV and see for myself.

The problem with disabling the frame buffer is that you can tell that the games were meant to be played in widescreen since many assets were rendered to compensate for the stretched image. With it disabled then certain graphics look too thin or elongated. I'll keep that on and turn on the 480p patch and disable deflicker. Sure it may not be as sharp, but I'd rather keep the aspect ratio right.

    • @wobblingpixels3921
      @wobblingpixels3921  Год назад +14

The framebuffer has nothiing to do with widescreen. :-) When you switch to 4:3 as shown in the video the game renders 2d and 3d elements at the correct aspect ratio. With disabled framebuffer the image will be slightly compressed which can be fixed with your tv settings or a good scaler. At the end it's up to you

I cant remember if im right but if im. Ot mistaken the wii converts a digital signal to analog internally. So even when you use all these work arounds you are still converting analog back to digital.
I think the other gaming channel talked about this issue with the wii. There is a workaround but i can’t remember.
This is also a reason why gamecube games can have a much sharper and cleaner look with the same upgrades done. (Hdmi adapter + mclassic.) or retrotink etc..

If you're using the Retrotink5X heres something you might find useful when using the frame buffer option: If games seem too skinny, turning on the DTV 480p setting in the sampling section will make it slightly wider than usual while being sharper, but because the image is slightly skinnier due to the frame buffer setting, it will cancel out while giving you an even sharper image due to optimized sampling.

I hope more advancements come to the Wii U in the coming years as the only thing holding it back from good Wii game performance is the scaling being absolutely terrible at all resolutions. If people can figure out how to fix the Wii Us scaling of Wii games at all resolutions and figure out how to add the fixes shown in this video to TeconmoonWiiVCInjector, then the Wii U will be the ultimate way to play Wii games for me.

My quest for the absolute best video quality possible on original Wii Hardware.
    1. Have a later Wii model that has slightly better Analog output. (I have a White RVL-CPU-40 that still has Gamecube ports).
    2. Official Nintendo Component cables and set to 480p in settings. Also have it set to 4:3 instead of 16:9 because I'm using a CRT.
    3. 480p pixel patch in Priiloader to fix 480p bug that affects all software.
    4. Do everything shown in this video. I'm using USBloader GX, to load all my GC and Wii games off USB with faster load times.
    5. Use a Component to VGA Transcoder to connect to a Trinitron CRT Monitor. 480p on a computer Monitor looks like a PVM but WAY cheaper. Especially since Aperture Grille CRTs produce way nicer colors than others.
    6. Profit. Playing Smash Bros. Melee with this setup looks so beautiful I want to cry.

I also already own a Nintendo Wii console as well since 2007, my model is RVL-CPU-01 version, its PAL (UK) region and it’s still working fine.
For quite a few years now, I’m slowly planning on setting up my Wii console again to play both GameCube and Wii games, and as well doing some video game capture recording.
From doing some research (reading and watching) of understanding of the Wii model revision history, I really wanted to pinpoint (if possible) of which Wii console revision model versions is the best one to pick up for both visual and longevity (maybe).
So my main question is, Which revision Wii models between RVL-CPU-01 to RVL-CPU-60 (with GameCube component) is the best one for visual?
I know this is a silly question to ask)
    Long-story-short for my ideal setup…
    - I’m planning on picking up another Wii console.
    - I already own Mike Chi’s RetroTINK 5X Pro.
    - The HD Retrovision Wii / Wii U Premium YPbPr Component Cable is being shipped.
So that my ideal set I wanted to form.
As well in the near future, I would like to get the Electron Shepherd’s ElectronAVE Kit - Wii Mod one day (to see the visual detail differences in-person).
Nevertheless sorry for this long written request, and I hope you have a good week.
    From
    Samfake233

I hardly think any of these outside of the 4:3 aspect ratio are improvements. While the sharper image may look better at first glance, it’s clear that there is a lot more aliasing that developers didn’t think they needed to fix as they accounted for the blur being there. Removing the bloom in Mariokart Wii also felt criminal. That was a big part of the game’s identity to me and it just looks wrong without it. Not something that was ever emphasized as a must-have fix, but still. Also I feel like the gecko code hack for DKCR is bound the cause some graphical glitches. I think if you want the best image on your Wii, you don’t even need to mod it, literally just play in 4:3 on your old grandparent’s crt and call it a day.

  • @Simikins

Were you using PAL or NTSC for the demonstrations? At least with Twilight Princess, 480p is significantly better on NTSC vs. PAL (Maybe because it removes one of these 6 problems, idk).

Welp, this is useless. I had Nick Kalemba install the WiiDUAL HDMI kit on a red RVL-CPU-40 variant. It won't get the 480p de-flicker. Oh well, doesn't mean it's a bad Wii, at least I can still have clean digital to digital 480p... With bad flickering.

    • @StephanieHua
      @StephanieHua 9 месяцев назад

WiiDual can be seen as say "replacement" for the scalers mentioned in the video
It should further optimize your experience because it produces a cleaner digital signal, and eliminates the need for the scalers. You could consider the upcoming RetroTink4K as a scaler to upscale to 4K.
WiiDual also "fixes" the analog output to support RGBS and RGsB so if you use high quality cables (ie RetroCables UK, and currently in hiatus RetroAccess) to a scaler.
Also, if you have PriiLoader, you can enable the 480p bug fixes for the Wii Menus. Seeing cleaner text/icons/channels on your modern HD television is like magic.
