Love the Neumann NDH20s. I've had to use monitors less, especially at night and went from entry level Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro to the Neumanns. Wow. Speaking on sound only, they are pretty damn awesome. While I haven't compared them to high end headphones like Audeze LCD or Focal, I can say that give a truer representation to almost anything when used with high quality audio input. I'm running everything through my UA Apollo X8, and this combination is fantastic. Mixes sound better than before and even streaming or loading up a blu-ray sounds so much better. For the price, they're definitely worth it. There are some drawbacks for those who are looking for a more complete review. My main complaint is the headband which feels like the shape is too wide to sit snugly on top of the head. They tend to slide a bit if you nod your head forcefully (e.g. along with a good beat). And when bending over, they slide off. They fit snugly over the ears and do not pose an issue when just sitting and working. They feel pretty tight over the ear actually. All in all I love them and am looking to get the LCD-X or HEDDphone to find the best headphone mixing solution for my needs.

@@劉仲齊 Follow Up Mar 1, 2023: I’ve now owned the Audeze LCD-X and LCD MX-4. Both handle mixing incredibly well. The MX-4 is considerably more expensive but also sounds incredibly good and flatter than the LCD-X. With the LCD-X you get great open-back sound with a bit brighter profile compared to the MX-4. Overall, it’s a judgement call if you think the MX4 are $2000 “better”. In the end I went with the MX-4, and I don’t regret it. But I also would be able to do well with the LCD-X. The Sennheiser hd600s are amazing for the price. And build quality is excellent. I think Sanjay way underestimated them. I had a pair of Sennheiser hd580s for 15 years and they were great. Finally decided I needed new cans and picked uo the hd600 for mixing and the hd280s for jamming. And of course the Beyer dynamics make the highs pop out more. The range goes to 40khz on the top end. But that isn't always the best for mixing. For mixing in cans you want a flat response. If you are listening for enjoyment and have the cash, get the 1990s, but for mixing get the hd600s.

Sanjay, can you please make a video on "How to setup a home studio or portable workstation using iPad" which current ipad model is best for this, what DAW to use, What plugins to use, what audio interface, what midi controller and what other gadgets to go with it? thank you! Happy new year
Very insightful, thank you for this review! Question: I see you have the Universal Audio Twin X on your desk, is the Twin X not enough to push the DT1990? And - do you recommend purchasing a separate amp/dac for the DT1990? Wondering which source would provide the best sound quality with those cans. Thank you!
After trying out all the headphones I realized that for me Neumann bdh30 suited the best.. top pricey but definitely worth every penny invested into it
The “clarity” in the beyerdynamics are due to the boost in the high mids and lows as shown in the frequency response charts. That’s why the hi hats are also piercing which is the trade off. Which also makes it awesome for listening to music. Mixing maybe not so much. On point with the slate built quality being the downside. Could’ve been better. That being said, not having to buy multiple headphones and speakers is cheaper in the long run. Not to mention not going to the car to check mixes comes a long way. Eliminating a lot of guess work and switching headsets to check. plus slate always adds to their emulations. If it can sound like multiple things and is extremely close to what it’s emulating, I think decent is an understatement. There’s a reason it’s sold out right now.
I have the srh1540. They sure do sound incredible but I prefer the more diffuse field tuning of its little brother srh940. I prefer both of these to my hd800.
@@thunderstar254 My opinion hasn’t changed much. I still prefer it over every other headphone I’ve tried, with the exception of srh940 which I like more. They need significant amping headroom (lots of current, 2w into 32 ohms if possible) to get their full dynamics, but can also be used with a phone if you’re okay with a softer and less dynamic sound. Just to note: the headphone I own is hd800 (hd800s is a different headphone that I have also heard and it’s quite similar to hd800) Why I like them more than hd800? I think srh1540 sound closer to what I’d feel if I were at the position of the mic. It makes things sound “real” and personal as if I’m with the singer. Much easier to follow and appreciate the micro tonal variations in the singer and instrumentalists. Hd800 is no slouch either but I often feel like female falsettos and high pitched voices donot have the same sense of energy or realism as I feel out of srh1540. The one area I prefer hd800 over the shures is bass. I think the bass on hd800 is some of the most incredible I’ve heard in terms of hearing the subtle gradations in bass notes with almost a physical feel.
What do you think about Hifiman Sundara being used for mixing? In forums I have read about a few people using them for that purpose. I am buying them for "listening enjoyment" regardless but I was wondering what your thoughts were on mixing with them as well.
You were right about your review regarding the 600’s. Remember though that midrange is key in having a good mix to translate on different devices. The midrange is most important element. With a few tweaks on lows and highs. Do the VSX have emulation of 600’s in them curious on that.
For price under 1k, beyer dt 1990 is the best studio headphone I have ever heard. It is a significant step up from dt990. But if your buget is more than 1k, try focal clear pro. It is my current studio headphone, It is also a huge step up from beyer 1990. The clarity is even better and not piercing like dt 1990. To me, a little better than sennheiser hd 800s. HD800 is a little too analytical to me. If you have even more, try focal utopia, hifiman he1000se, abyss diana phi. Once heard, never go back. Once passed 1k, although different reference headphone still have its own sound characteristic, the difference is not so much and they can be used for both music enjoyment and in the studio.
you make my weekend so much better bro! Are you planning to make videos during the weekdays as well this week to continue to give us black friday deals updates?
Is using an open back headphone a problem for recording acoustic guitar with mic ? And is the avantone pro mp1 a good set of headphone for recording, mixing and mastering ?
Great video dude, do you think that byerdynamics 1990 pro would be better solely for mixing and nothing else because I was thinking of Neumann NDH20 for a while because they were on discount but do you think I should spend more and get 1990 pro for a little better mix than NDH20 or not?
I think the NDH20 is better for balancing a mix. I say that because it is never harsh in any frequency. The Beyers are harsh on the highs which doesn't give you a truly flat response which is what you want. The Beyers are better for placing your sound in a stereo field - because of the clarity. I hope that helps you.
i think Shure SRH1840 blows the other phones into the water, Shure is the most respected sound brand in the world, they have done magical stuff, as unkillable legendary mics, that survived insane durabillity tests, to the best in-ear phone in the world for it`s money, i highly doubt, that Beyerdynamic with its INSANELY high treble peak on chart, beat Shure SRH1840 with it`s increadibly almost flat frequency chart.. beyerdynamic is over hyped by people who think "extreme highs" are flat but don`t really know about mixing, DT1990 is far from flat, it has even higher treble peak than the cheap Audio technnica m50x :)) i understand why your favorite was Shure ^^
Hi Sanjay, I am getting a very faint slight humming sound on my studio speakers. Is that normal for all speakers? I tried two different models of desktop speakers (both made by Bose), with different audio cables, and even different electrical outlets. Each of the two brands have a different type of, but faint, humming/static noise when they are simply turned on, even at zero volume, and even when not connected to my computer.
Your videos are great! To record voiceovers in my studio, be it for professional voiceovers for documentaries and commercials; that is to say "to place-modulate the voice in its right tone" do you recommend the Neumann NDH 20 or the Beyerdynamic DT-1770 Pro? Thank you
Could you do a video on preventing hearing damage using headphones? Hardware, software, settings, plugins? Most people only get interested in this subject when it's too late.
@@SanjayC Thanks for your response. Some plugins can be unexpectedly loud, yes. As can be snares. Some Beyerdynamics can be bought with a build-in limiter, and there is a company selling limited headphones, but that comes at a price I'm reluctant today just to give it a try. And can one measure the effect? I saw Andrew Huang telling he had tinnitus. So it might be an interesting subject. www.canford.co.uk/CANFORD-LEVEL-LIMITED-HEADPHONES
The struggle is real. Thank you for your amazing RUclips channel. I purchased some Yamaha HPH-MT8 being their flagship monitor headphones. They are very good but no low frequencies. I have two HS8’s and an HS8S. I need to be able to hear the low frequencies and these headphones don’t cut it. I need more bass and sub bass. Which do you recommend for this?
Hello Sanjay! Need more help. I got Aston Spirit mic. Yamaha hs5s. Krk 10s sub. Aston reflection filter. Silver cable for mic to interface. Im heavily leaning towards the apollo solo but concerned with workflow. Would you recommend I go with Apple (thunderbolt) or PC (usb) ? Or would you think some other interface is better for my setup? Also, im into Hip Hop so whats the best DAW to work with for recording and or producing in your opinion?? Thanks Man
Hi, guess this is coming late, but I think you should try studio one artist. If you want to master your tracks too, you can try studio one precessional
I have tried 2 of the headphones you mentioned (Shure and Sennheiser). I actually have a cheaper pair of Shure headphones that I prefer for mixing, SRH840 but I always check after with an openback Sennheiser set after and third pair of cheap best buy ones (on top of monitors and the car test). I just find the SRH840 more flat across more of the frequency range but still had a good amount of low end
If you’re recording vocals then you will need closed back headphones. open back leak a lot of sound which you will hear when recording. Hope that helps
Got the 1990. But honestly I long for the shure 1840. They seem flat as fkk. I use sonarworks anyways but a more natural flat sound must be much better for sound design.
Hi Sanjay I have a doubt mate. I have the Neumanns but despite having a good interface which should drive them decently enough (the Arturia Audiofuse Studio)... despite they dont really sound quiet neither they sound loud at all even with the gain at the very top on the Arturia Do you think I could benefit for that headphone amplifier that you recommend or given my equipment really that would not make any difference? Thanks very much :)

iFi Audio Zen DAC, paired with the iFi Audio Zen CAN. Extremely efficient in all aspects. To save a little more, buy the iFi Audio Zen Dac "AIR" (but keep the original of Zen CAN version).
Hello Sanjay. I am just getting into recording. I have Logic, MacBook Pro, Focusrite 4i4. I also use a AX8 Fractal for guitar modeling. I do not have studio monitors yet but will get as I am slowing adding peripherals step by step. I don't want to buy 2 headphones one for mixing vs recording (open back vs closed back headphones as I understand). Price range 100-400 possibly more. I played studio monitors Yamaha HS8 which sounded great. I am thinking doing recording without bothering neighbors at night at first. Someone suggested Blue MoFi which someone suggested? What would you recommend for me? The one you recommended at end of YT clip seems to be open back.
Sanjay, for the Shures, what is your perception of the THD in the mids and bass? I read some reviews that acknowledge these are flat cans, but have significantly more THD in those areas and therefore aren't "mixing and mastering" headphones. I have the HD650 (calibrated by sonarworks) and the HD600 and I'm just looking for another reference for a different perspective to my mixing and mastering. I thought these Shures would be the one.
I'm not sure what to get.. stuck between the Srh 1840 and the Neumann ndh 20. I am a full time audio engineer and producer. So i do alot of mixing and production work. I currently own shure srh 840. And I absolutely love it. But it is 5 years old now and it has started to sound a bit worn out. So definitely time to upgrade!
I have the skullcandy 'bass you can feel" I dont know the official name but ive been in music for prolly a year now and i still suck lol. but I like these headphones because they have INTENSE base. And I find this useful because on other headphones your beat sounds great until you play it on your speakers and the bass sounds a lot different then in the headphones. These headphones pretty much eliminate that losing very little clarity, and if you dont like extreme bass then theres a slider on the left earphone that lets you control it.
Beyerdynamics won as usual 😅 , I'm not telling that other headphones are not good .... "You choose a headphone for its sound character" - Sajay c (Check out video of comparing budget headphone)
I’m looking for a new pair of mixing headphones. Question: if the Neumanns sound closest to your in-studio sound (with such high-grade monitors), why do the 1990s make your favorite list over the Neumanns? I’m looking for the best option for mixing.
Good question… I really prefer the 1990s for picking out sounds and problems in my music. Just because they are so clear and separate sounds beautifully. I don’t use them as a reference for the overall mix. I prefer the Neumanns for that….or of course my monitors.
I feel like it does slightly, but I think that’s because it’s driving it differently. I think every source slightly changes the character of phones. But it’s koala unnoticeable for most.
Id go with the Neumanns they my next cans as i I have already the kh120. I never really like the harsh kind of vibe of the beyers even though they are excellent. The sennheiser hd600 are very hi fi sounding to me (they sound very good though) with a bit of dark sound as a whole. I d be curious to test those Shure though, but analytical wise i guess neumanns are the best :) Thanks for your review Sanjay, extremely pro as usual.

Definitely going to refer to this video when I actually want to get one.
Nice vid as always
Sanjay, can you please make a video on "How to setup a home studio or portable workstation using iPad" which current ipad model is best for this, what DAW to use, What plugins to use, what audio interface, what midi controller and what other gadgets to go with it? thank you! Happy new year
For mixing and mastering neuman is the best? Or do you prefer the beyer?
You are going to make me watch all yours videos aren't you?! Yeah, your content is that good.
You can run the vsx on your computer with “sound source”. It allows you to run on your computer instead of your daw.
Which one translates best when you mix... that is the only we need.
I've been really liking my Austrian Audio HI-X55's for mixing. They have amazing detail and are extremely comfortable.
Yes, they are quite good.
I'm curious how they compare to the akg k371
@@aight365 I don’t have an akg k371 so I’m not sure, sorry:/
The recent Slate VSX 4.0 Software Update is incredible ... trust me youll love it ! def give it another go m8!
Thank you!
My thumbs up go to, It`s verry nice that you review a little more expensive gear for the more serious professional.
Hey, Sanjay! You've been very helpful🙂 I have a few questions, if you don't mind. DT 1990 or Neumann NDH-20? Why so?
Great job on this video, clear, concise and really informative, thank you!
After trying out all the headphones I realized that for me Neumann bdh30 suited the best.. top pricey but definitely worth every penny invested into it
Hi Sanjay!!! Great info!! thats sound perfect. Just a question: Headphones for Mixing Dolby Atmos. Do you recommend anyone? Thanks!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Very helpful
I have the srh1540. They sure do sound incredible but I prefer the more diffuse field tuning of its little brother srh940. I prefer both of these to my hd800.
How do you like the 1540s? And why do you like them more then the hd800s?
@@thunderstar254 My opinion hasn’t changed much. I still prefer it over every other headphone I’ve tried, with the exception of srh940 which I like more. They need significant amping headroom (lots of current, 2w into 32 ohms if possible) to get their full dynamics, but can also be used with a phone if you’re okay with a softer and less dynamic sound.
Just to note: the headphone I own is hd800 (hd800s is a different headphone that I have also heard and it’s quite similar to hd800)
Why I like them more than hd800?
@@manueljenkin95 Wow thank you for the thorough explanation! It was informative and very helpful 👍
The Slate headphones look like cheap wireless headphones from 2003. The 1990 PROs are literally art.
What do you think about Hifiman Sundara being used for mixing? In forums I have read about a few people using them for that purpose. I am buying them for "listening enjoyment" regardless but I was wondering what your thoughts were on mixing with them as well.
I'm in a tight budget but your videos always helped me alot nice video on premium headphones
Happy to hear that!
Hi Sanjay! Have you compared the HD 600 and HD 650 yourself, at some length? Thanks, K
Love the BeyerDynamic.
you make my weekend so much better bro! Are you planning to make videos during the weekdays as well this week to continue to give us black friday deals updates?
Yes, I'll have a video on a weekday this week to cover Black Friday! Look out for it!
@@SanjayC Awesome! Thanks a ton!
What about the Sundara for mixing?
@@SanjayC It really did, thank you. I understand the biggest difference between the two now.
Yup the best seem to be *underrated*
i think Shure SRH1840 blows the other phones into the water, Shure is the most respected sound brand in the world, they have done magical stuff, as unkillable legendary mics, that survived insane durabillity tests, to the best in-ear phone in the world for it`s money, i highly doubt, that Beyerdynamic with its INSANELY high treble peak on chart, beat Shure SRH1840 with it`s increadibly almost flat frequency chart.. beyerdynamic is over hyped by people who think "extreme highs" are flat but don`t really know about mixing, DT1990 is far from flat, it has even higher treble peak than the cheap Audio technnica m50x :)) i understand why your favorite was Shure ^^
I would love an inclusion of Austrian Audio headphones, former akg engineers 🤙🏾
What headphones sounded the the best with the apllo twin ?
I like the intro and outro music, where can I hear more?
That's very true. I always suggest lowering the volume of the headphones before you even put them on. Better to be safe than sorry
Which headphone would you recommend for mixing techno?
Excellent video on the best headphones!
Thank you 🙏🏼
The struggle is real.

Would you rather have an open or closed back headphone for recording vocals and streaming? I'm a beginner
If you’re recording vocals then you will need closed back headphones. open back leak a lot of sound which you will hear when recording. Hope that helps
“I actually own the car it’s showing so...” hahaha. Great vid as always Sanjay
:-) Thanks Luca!
Got the 1990. But honestly I long for the shure 1840. They seem flat as fkk. I use sonarworks anyways but a more natural flat sound must be much better for sound design.
where did you thake spectrum analysis of headphones?
Hi, SAnjay C ...did you hear bowers &wilkins PX7, how is it ?can it use for recording or doing remix , like neumann
Would i be fine as an mixing amateur with the DT 990 or Sennheiser HD650 + Sonarworks and room emulation?
Hi Sanjay I have a doubt mate. I have the Neumanns but despite having a good interface which should drive them decently enough (the Arturia Audiofuse Studio)... despite they dont really sound quiet neither they sound loud at all even with the gain at the very top on the Arturia
Do you think I could benefit for that headphone amplifier that you recommend or given my equipment really that would not make any difference?
Thanks very much :)
Most excellent video. All the info we need and well done. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Is the shure the best in terms of soundstage and imaging?
Hey Sanjay, thanks for this video. Have you taken a listen to the newest Neumann NDH30s yet? Curious your thoughts on them and if they are an improvement!
I haven't tried them yet. I want to
@@SanjayC Thanks for the response! Hope you do soon - they sound promising - but they haven't released a freq response chart yet to show how 'neutral' they really are!
hey Sanjay can I use the Beyerdynamic 1990x 250 ohm with my Apollo x4 ? or the headphone amp is a must?
thanks
Hey Sanjay, I`m also mixing with Barefoot Monitor but my Sony MDR7506 have a completly different sound then what I get from my monitors so I`m alway`s wondering if I get to mutch Lows absobstion from my room treatments or my sony are just lying to me ?
Thank you so much for your extensive work in detailed version - Sub'd. Have a quick question - I bought the Shure MV7 & DT770 Pro 250ohm version - My use case scenario being Music listening/Movie watching/ Gaming / little bit of video editing with voice over. Im perplexed now to buy an amp or an audio interface or a mixer - could you please recommend of I should go with yamaha ag06 or focusrite 2i2 solo given my use case scenario ? Thanks in advance and all the very best
iFi Audio Zen DAC, paired with the iFi Audio Zen CAN.
What are your thoughts about the new Adam Audio Studio Pro SP-5 headphones? How do they compare to the top 5 premium headphones?
Sanjay, for the Shures, what is your perception of the THD in the mids and bass? I read some reviews that acknowledge these are flat cans, but have significantly more THD in those areas and therefore aren't "mixing and mastering" headphones. I have the HD650 (calibrated by sonarworks) and the HD600 and I'm just looking for another reference for a different perspective to my mixing and mastering. I thought these Shures would be the one.
it does and will, just the amp add bit too fun
So, between Neumann and Beyer you would go with 1990pro. Is there a particular reason to that? Why would you choose one pair over the other?
Hey is the neumann worth it if i dont have any audio interface ?
I'm not sure what to get.. stuck between the Srh 1840 and the Neumann ndh 20. I am a full time audio engineer and producer. So i do alot of mixing and production work. I currently own shure srh 840. And I absolutely love it. But it is 5 years old now and it has started to sound a bit worn out. So definitely time to upgrade!
Great review!
Thanks so much, Jovi. What do you think of the Slate VSX?
@@SanjayC I think it's great! Just that it's expensive 😅 I'll stick with my handy headphone
I love this Video and my favroite is the byerdynamic 1990 is the best sir I love it sir. Sorry for being late sir.😁😀😃
Hey buddy! Glad you came to watch. Yes the Beyers are amazing.
@@SanjayC I love it sir and I am still confused that which will sound more great sir Neumann or byerdynamic sir?🙂☺😀😁
You should review in ear monitors if possible.
I rock the Ultimate Ears UE11 pros for most of my tracking and sometimes even mixing :0
I'll look into it for sure
I have the skullcandy 'bass you can feel" I dont know the official name but ive been in music for prolly a year now and i still suck lol. but I like these headphones because they have INTENSE base. And I find this useful because on other headphones your beat sounds great until you play it on your speakers and the bass sounds a lot different then in the headphones. These headphones pretty much eliminate that losing very little clarity, and if you dont like extreme bass then theres a slider on the left earphone that lets you control it.
Wow...that's pretty cool. I have to check them out. Have you ever tried the Subpacs?
Beyerdynamics won as usual 😅 , I'm not telling that other headphones are not good ....

@@SanjayC yes ..you did 😁
hi! , which do you prefer between the srh1840 and the neuman ndh 30?
These kind of videos are really 😎
Thanks! What do you think of the Slate headphones?
I’m looking for a new pair of mixing headphones. Question: if the Neumanns sound closest to your in-studio sound (with such high-grade monitors), why do the 1990s make your favorite list over the Neumanns? I’m looking for the best option for mixing.
Good question… I really prefer the 1990s for picking out sounds and problems in my music. Just because they are so clear and separate sounds beautifully. I don’t use them as a reference for the overall mix. I prefer the Neumanns for that….or of course my monitors.
@@SanjayC I see… thanks for taking the time
I've been personally using ATH M-70 X and really think they are better than the NDH20. Correct me if I'm wrong Sanjay brother.
Love the music in the background. where can I find it brother ?
I created it and show you how I did it here ruclips.net/video/ZuH0YHdbLtY/видео.html
Fuck the trumpet sounds so fucking good on this backing track.
I have a question. Does using an amp change the tone of the headphones when mixing a track?
