- Helldivers 2 kicks ass. This isn’t news, obviously. You probably know that already and you’re probably one of the millions of players spreading democracy throughout the galaxy at this very moment. That said, WHY is this game such a hit? Join Max Scoville, Brian Altano, Jada Griffin and Akeem Lawanson as they unpack the many charms of Arrowhead’s cooperative bug-zapper bot-blaster hit that seems to be Sony’s secret weapon in the ongoing war of live-service games that seems to dominate the gaming space more and more every year. But, there are other games to talk about! Unicorn Overlord is Vanillaware’s answer to Nintendo’s Fire Emblem for non-tendo players, and it applies the studio’s trademark painterly aesthetic to the turn-based tactical strategy genre that seems to have plenty of Ogre Battle DNA. Speaking of Unicorns, because we were, Brian gives an impromptu review of Unicorn Princess, which probably wasn’t designed with any of us in mind, but that still doesn’t mean children should have to play a game about picking up garbage in order to appease Unica the Unicorn or whatever. Because the uphill battles of adulthood and parenting aren’t enough, Max has been playing Expeditions: A Mudrunner game, which is a game about making clunky old slow trucks drive slowly up little hills so you can look for rocks, and if it sounds tedious, that’s because it is, but in a way that’s oddly soothing and enjoyable. Are you still reading this? Does anybody read these? Do you think the truck game sounds like fun, or would you rather just zap the space bugs and mean robots? It’s nice that we have so many options when it comes to video games.

Had to stop listening to the episode to give my sympathy to Jada for the Unicorn Overlord segment. It'd be awesome if, moving forward, we could find ways to balance 'hot takes' on genres we already don't like with respecting both the co-hosts that are explaining them and the audiences that enjoy them. That whole segment was very much uncomfortable to listen to.

Here's a topic to discuss on the show!: with the increase of these high scale, "non-playable" games (Battlefront Classic, Cyberpunk & etc) does SONY need to change their refund system? Microsoft & Steam give refunds rather easily as long as you don't play for an extended amount of time, you get it. SONY requires the game to never be even downloaded or the company that made the game to say their game is unplayable.

I haven’t played Stellar Blade. I downloaded the demo and then PlayStation nuked it from my PS5
And it still would have been better to talk about than what was talked about. It kinda blew up the internet with how it got pulled plus how well it played for those who did get to play it. Yet, yall talked bout a unicorn game that not a single person that watches yall show will ever play. Not cause yall talked bout it either. It would have never been on anyone’s radar. I’ve been watching Beyond for bout 10yrs. It needs to get better.
Love Beyond and listen every week, but please try to reign in the comedy one-up-manship. 3mins in and the show has gone off on 5 different joke tangents already. I've always listened for game discussion, not stand-up. Keep up the great work and evolving the show.

First time in my nearly 17 year career that I've been called a "non-gamer." It's an honor. Thank you. Amazing work.
Important to remember that the cast was largely just joking about unicorn overlord and hadn't played it. Though the strongly worded point about not actually doing the combat might highlights why turn based combat has disappeared from the big budget gaming space. Alot of the younger western consumer base just aren't fans tactics gameplay.
