- Once upon a time, video game consoles were defined by their exclusive game lineups… these days, that seems like less of a sure thing, and with the rising cost of game development, it’s not hard to see why. Between a simultaneous PC release making Helldivers 2 PlayStation’s fastest-selling game ever, to Square-Enix aggressively exploring a multi-platform strategy, to Xbox Game Studios games like Sea of Thieves topping PS5 sales charts, it sure looks like more publishers are ditching the idea of keeping their games on just one platform or device. On a semi-related note, back in our day, video game controllers were small enough for little kids to play them, and now they’re too darn big! But really, maybe Nintendo’s on to something by offering teeny-tiny Joycon, but also a Switch Pro Controller. Meanwhile, the DualSense is practically twice the size of the first three generations of DualShock controllers, could there be a market for a smaller controller? Animal Well is, well, a game about animals at the bottom of a well, and that’s all well and good. Little Kitty Big City is the latest adorable indie game that has entirely too much NPC dialogue for its own good, and if you don’t mind reading the Elden Ring manga is easily the funniest interpretation of a FromSoft game this side of Prepare To Try. Podcast Beyond this week is Max Scoville, Brian Altano, Jada Griffin, and Akeem Lawanson.

@@Alex_Logan22 We frequently do entire episodes about one game. We did so for Stellar Blade. Two weeks ago we talked almost entirely about Sandland and Another Crab's Treasure. This week we planned to cover news in the first half and then games we're playing in the second half and ended up going longer on the exclusivity convo. Saying we "choose not to" talk about video games is wildly disingenuous.
Making a $300 million dollar game exclusive on a system with only 50 million users may not be enough

Stellar Blade is a prime example of making a killer game and on a decent budget. The environments are still artistic but not crazy detailed - they put the emphasis on their combat mechanics, OST & their protagonist’s “assets” lol - but it works! It’s smart design. Curious to see what the sales come out to be.
That near 60 also includes impulse buys that rarely if ever use it, 2nd or even 3rd consoles or replacements for broken units so it's really not that many users in reality, of course.
Helldivers being on pc and ps at launch and being their fastest selling game to date (despite sonys attempt at self sabotage) speaks volumes.
Sony will be thinking....imagine if we released on Xbox, mobile and Nintendo as well.

“Back in the day,” games were just made to be fun, and were experimental in the process because publishers didn’t really know yet what would sell. Now publishers see what sells, and it’s like the modern day gold rush. Everyone is trying to get a piece of that, but only a couple are actually striking gold, and there will be a lot of losses in the process.
The animal game that Max couldn't think of, that has similar vibes to ANIMAL WELL, is called KarmaZoo. It was released in November 2023.
Ultimately, publishers don't come up with expectations for a game. Shareholders do. Investors expect a certain amount of profits from a company, or they sell their stock, lowering the value of the company.

Games need to be better. Not more expensive. Take me back to the PS3 days and give me a PSP2 to play on.
the n64 had a crazy controller and all my friends had it at around 7 years old along with the playstation controller and sega dreamcast. not sure if you want your kid getting that into games younger than that. If you play at elementary school then theres a safe bet youve built a connection with whatever console you have. you dont have to play a console sub 5 years old to have a connection with a console.

During the PS3 era Naughty Dog shipped four new games plus the Left Behind DLC. They haven’t shipped one so far on PS5 outside of remasters of PS4 games and everything they made last gen is now on PC. It’s absolutely a very different world than it was 15 years ago.
@@BrianAltano it definitely is not the same. With a few exceptions, or more likely some devs being more secretive about the games they are making (Nintendo)... AAA devs will release smaller games and smaller devs will take majority of the earnings per year since it's smaller costs and development. AAA devs will still exist. But the gaming landscape will change more. The concerning part is will the quality remain consistent vs a flood of games that hit the market for the sake of money.
AAA games will continue but the risk will remain great. The PS3 era was expensive being over 75m+ for a single title but the risk wasn't so dire as it is now. Obviously we're seeing this in our own industry now.
We might be able to craft amazing worlds and games with a AA title and use that as a pivoting point for bigger ideas later on.

We bought a Hori controller for our kids back on PS4. It was smaller portioned for little kid hands. They really liked it.

The over inflated budgets of triple A games have made exclusivity non profitable or lose a bunch of potential profit. Big shock these billion dollar video game publishers and companies don't want exclusivity since it means they could make less money

This feels like a hole in Sony's strategy. They always worked to make their console the best selling and could then rely on having the market share to profit off of game sales. But that's harder to do now, so that entire approach feels weak. Nintendo focuses more on the games themselves and are doing great. Sony has some great games, of course, but a lot of their big games all feel the same to me. I'm tired of open world, third person, generic action, hunting for waypoints on a map.

Exclusivity used to matter when consoles weren't loss leaders. With the population growth of PC/ mobile gaming, much of the monetary growth is to be found there (sadly).

@@BrianAltano kind of ...but then spent most of the episode referencing how everyone can just pick up the latest/greatest on PC vs. Console, as if everyone has the rig to play them at the same quality on console (or better) or wants to deal with the constant maintenance/upgrade/compatibility/shitty port issues PC gaming brings vs. the simplicity of a console.
You can easily beat the performance of a PS5 for around $800-1000.

Of course not, with Xbox dying we will see more and more ps5 console exclusives as publisher will making less and less Xbox versions, it’s just not worth if games get outsold 10:1 in favour of ps5. Not to mention the struggle to make 2024 games even run on series s

Sony wants cross platform because their fastest selling game in history just launched day and date on PC. Last year they launched Spider-Man 2 on PS5 only and then had to lay off Insomniac staff. You will absolutely see more first party Sony games launch on PC day one in the future.
@@BrianAltanoyou are so some acid. Hell divers was a multiplayer game so of course day and date with pc makes sense. The ps5 will be worthless without exclusives. Exclusives matters but people just want everything day and date because Xbox is struggling.
@AllThingsInfamous1 exclusively is dying system dude ..look at square enix ff16 and rebirth both only ps5 didn't perform well so now they goin all out ...and one time atlus with the persona series and sega with yakuza series was only on sony systems, now both of those series selling even better being on everything..xbox of course is heading full 3rd party and sony will definitely do day 1 pc at least ..
@@AllThingsInfamous1 Don't shoot the messenger. Just watch and see how many first party PlayStation games launch on PC day one or soon after. Almost all of their first party PS5 games are on PC or are coming to PC. It's either that or keep laying off staff at each studio when a game doesn't recoup its losses.
@AllThingsInfamous1 The PS5's most played games are: Call of Duty, Fifa, Fortnite and GTA. None of them are exclusive games, lol.
