  • Float valves are used to shut off the flow of water at some predetermined level. They are found most commonly in toilet tanks, but the float valve we discuss is used to fill cisterns in conjunction with a pressure switch.

    I always thought the toilet was magical when I was little, now I know it’s a float valve behind it all!

    Nice video about valves, but one big question that wasn't answered is how much of the water can be withdrawn from the tank before well pump starts up again? From look of the float valve, it looks like as soon as water level drops a little on the tank, pump will restart (because pressure will quickly drop and pump will kick back on). If you want large cycling water volume from the tank and low cycling of the well pump, float valve doesn't seem to be the answer.

    This is really clear thanks. I have a float valve controlling water in a decorative pond (actually a large planter barrel) in back yard. I want to permanently stop the water fill so I can use the “pond” for a garden. How do i permanently stop it refilling - I don’t want to stop the water supply to the back yard cos that would kill my plants. Sounds like you have the expertise to help! Thanks in advance

    Hi, would you recommend this arrangement to fill a 300 gallon storage tank inside my home? I have a low yield well that is 380 ft deep and the pump is set at around 350 ft. The yield is around 1/8 gpm. I would like to do something like this and supply water from my existing pressure tank with a dole flow regulator. I plan to install a booster pump on the discharge of the storage tank. Any suggestion/recommendations would be appreciated.

    Can you use gravity fed water to operate the valve? Or does it have to be water pressure.... if so how much water pressure is required to make it operate?

    I have a situation where I’ve plumbed (2) 3/4” hose bibs into a 2” brass float valve. Which has a 3/8” brass rod 12” long to a 12” ball. The flow is now ideal however the valve doesn’t close fully??? Arg…please advise

    hi, sir. could you tell me, what is the meaning of operating pressure of floating valve (for example: 0.4 -6 bar)? it is fluid's pressure through the pipe or the ambient pressure of the tank?

    • @RCworstwater
      @RCworstwater  4 года назад

      The pressure in the pipe is what we're referring to.

    how about an equilibrium float valve and delayed action float valves.
    I have work on equilibrium float valves with 4" bore, and 20" copper float, you needed a wheel barrow to bring them to the workshop

    I could not find a video about the dual flush system, and how to fix the continues flow even if the tank if full and the floater works fine

    • @daibhiseaghdha153

      check out the water level, there is usually a " water level line " on the inside of the cistern, at the back, easy to see, if the water level is higher than it should be the water will continue to be siphoned out of the cistern,. or if some one has put the wrong height siphon in, that would cause a problem, continuing to siphon the water out.
      measure from the " water line " to the bottom of the cistern,and add an 25-32mm, to the spill point to determine the size of a flush siphon should be.

    Can we consider plastic float(ball) as massless for calulation of depth of ball submerged at some specific water inlet press.

    My tank has the inlet water connection at the middle and how to fix this to stop the water when the tank is full. I cant make the inlet to the upper side as the water pressure from the main line is very low.

    I have a question. Does the ball (float) have to be airtight? My ball threads are stripped out. It has a tight fit still and you can’t just pull the ball from the arm. But after hours of sitting my water level keeps creeping up the overflow tube. I am wondering if the ball needs to hold a constant air pressure to work properly?

    • @RCworstwater
      @RCworstwater  3 года назад

      Yes, if the ball is waterlogged it will not float up and shut off the flow.

    • @scottbolden2961
      @scottbolden2961 3 года назад

      @@RCworstwater no it’s not water logged and where the ball threads into the arm never gets close to the water level.

    • @TheRainHarvester
      @TheRainHarvester 2 года назад

      @@scottbolden2961 the air pressure inside the ball won't matter. Just make sure water isn't filling into the ball. Otherwise the ball can't float. It needs to be sealed from water. Water vapor could condensate into the ball of it is cracked. Shake it to see if it contains water (bad).

    • @daibhiseaghdha153
      @daibhiseaghdha153 11 месяцев назад

      the ball valve float has to be air tight, or water will get in to it, and then it will not be able to float properly, the lever arm between the ball float , and the valve, does not enter the float, just attaches it to the female threaded attachment on the float, the reason that the water keeps creeping in, is ether the water pressure is too high, or the aperture on the " seating " is too big on the internal orifice, or the ball valve washer has deteriorated, which happens to them all eventually.they are easy to replace.
      the ball float is not really under pressure, ( unless it is a long way down, which will not happen) it just happens to be lighter than water, so floats, in doing so, it operates the lever arm, to stop the water entering the tank / cold water storage cistern / toilet cistern, the bigger the diameter of the water supply to the ball valve, the longer the lever arm needs to be, but there are better float valves,
      " equilibrium " float valves, which let more water volume through, and use the water pressure to make it close the water off, by using the water pressure to enter the other end of the sealed valve, so that the water pressure is equal, so it is not under pressure at all that's why it is named an equilibrium " float valve, you can get them for toilet cisterns, cold water storage cistern, etc 1/2 " - 4" diameter water supply pipes, they hjave been around for over 50 years, I was a plumber in hospitals, we had cold water storage tanks bigger than swimming pools with 4" diameter float / ball valves, this was back in the early 70's.
      or you can we can " delayed action float valves " which fill the tanks etc in minutes on full bore, then close off in seconds, look at "Ebco " equilibrium float ball valves, or keraflo delayed action float valve, you will have similar ones made in you country. try this on youtube " Keraflo Ltd "
      but you can also, get domestic equilibrium versions, best to get them, with brass tails, then you won't cross thread them easily, which happens on the plastic tailed options.
      I must not forget that if your wate supplyr is " hard " then lime scale will effect the ball float valves

      maybe they should show us why they do not not work, these can be solved by people, who know these inside out, I have been a registered plumber since 1972, I know a bit.
      it would have made more sense to show them working rather than been dead.

    Very basic information. Not helpful for actually using them or adjusting the control point for flow on/off.
