  • To study the ocean, MBARI researchers and scientists not only need access to special equipment, they need that equipment to work-and last-under water. That’s where our Manufacturing Group comes in.
Led by Jose Rosal, MBARI’s Manufacturing Group works closely with our scientists and engineers to understand what they need to do their jobs better-then bring their ideas to life in the form of robots and other high-tech instruments.
Members of MBARI’s Manufacturing Group have a diverse set of skills that are critical to our research and tech innovation. Machinists take raw materials and process them to incredibly exact dimensions. Mechanical technicians build, modify, and repair all the mechanical parts that make our instruments work under water. Electronic technicians make electronic components, from circuit boards to wiring. Using wrenches and soldering irons as their instruments of choice, this team turns raw metals and a tangle of wires into a functional work of art able to withstand the harsh conditions of the deep sea.
MBARI’s mission is to advance marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. This year, we’re spotlighting various teams at MBARI to showcase the different ways we’re working to better understand the largest environment on Earth. We hope this series inspires a new generation of ocean explorers.
MBARI thrives by bringing together people with different perspectives and approaches to solve problems faced by our ocean. Learn how you can join our team: www.mbari.org/about/careers/

Nice to see the "behind the scenes" crew getting some recognition. Though having their dream job probably counts for more. Nice clip.

It's incredible that you guys have an in-house engineering and production team. I'm an electronics and software engineer with a mill and a lathe in my garage and life-long affinity to the ocean. Reach out if you ever need a hand.

If you are helping to preserve our oceans, what you're doing matters.

I always thought that those that were in the international space station and going into space have the coolest jobs but after seeing this the MBARI team have pretty gnarly jobs too.

I've been an engineer for 20 years and I'd happily do an unpaid internship there as well!

Those losers building spaceships that only need to deal with one atmosphere difference in pressure have nothing on you.
