Orangewood vs Taylor Acoustic Guitar Shootout!

  • Today we're comparing the brand new Orangewood Sage acoustic guitar ($650) to my trusty Taylor GA3 (most like the current Taylor 314 at $1700). Both are very similar shapes but the difference is that the Sage has a cutaway with mahogany back and sides while the Taylor has no cutaway (so a little extra weight) and sapele back and sides.
    Both guitars have brand new sets of Elixir .12 phosphor bronze acoustic strings, albeit the Sage's ship stock with Ernie Ball acoustic strings. I tried my best to play them as evenly as possible into an Audio-Technica AT4050 which is right outside the visible camera angle. Let me know what you think!

      The Taylor was deeper and crisper. There’s no doubt that taylor makes a better sounding guitar solid wood made in the USA. Now for a Chinese made guitar the orange wood sounds very nice but there’s no comparison. But for someone that can’t afford the Taylor I would think the orange wood is a great starter guitar for that price. Martin and taylor make supremely better sounding quality guitars than Chinese brands. It’s not to say that Yamaha and orange wood are terrible but it’s like comparing a M5 bmw to a Camaro. The Camaro is nice and fun and great but that M5 is like a spaceship on wheels. Just my opinion what do I know.

    I bought an Orangewood Ava and it plays and sounds amazing, especially for a sub $1000 guitar. I adjusted the neck slightly and it has one of the best actions I've ever played on an acoustic guitar. Very low and zero fret buzz anywhere on the neck. Just going on the sound comparison they are both very nice sounding guitars. I have owned Taylors and I have also owned Orangewoods and to me the OW take the prize. Both Taylor's that i bought needed quite a bit of set up when i got them including shaving the saddle adjusting the truss which most people would need to have done for an extra expense. I am on my third OW now which is a Hudson solid wood model with Torrefied top (cost $659) and other than tuning right out of the box these guitars have been set up very nicely. Quality and workmanship of OW guitars is simply wonderful. So i guess if you are a Taylor fan then a Taylor is a great guitar for a couple grand with set up cost but if you just want an excellent inexpensive great quality guitar to play and are not concerned what it says on the headstock then an OW is a great choice and you can take the extra 14 hundred bucks saved and buy more guitars!!! I am unlike most who posted here and preferred the Orangewood. It had a deeper tone, which Martins have, which I prefer. I have noticed from many many videos, that the Orangewood intonation is far superior to others. In this video, the Taylor was out of tune, so I do not make that judgement on this video. Many people buy die to the name. I will buy due to the tone and volume and intonation up the fret board.
    At first the Orangewood had the better sound, then when he switched to finger picking, the Taylor did, but it also does not have the cutaway, which I was shocked at the volume and deeper base sounds that came out of the Orangewood at the beginning.
    If I had money, Martin or the new V braced Taylor would be my pick, but I am older, no money, and its between the Orangewood and the Yamaha LL6.

    This is yet another example of an 85% product compared to a 90% that costs three times as much, true in so many things - cars, cameras, just about everything. That extra 5% when you are already 85% there always costs much more proportionately, it’s logarithmic. To get to 95% would probably be triple again, $5000, at which point reaching 100% is more metaphysical than practical. Perhaps a $650 Orangewood is 80% or 75%, same applies. I see guitars through the eyes of an engineer, given what we know in the way of materials and design to make a guitar sound a certain way it would seem anything more involved in building one has to be categorized as styling and marketing. I think that is what Orangewood has done. They know which woods work best, which woods are almost as good but a lot cheaper, etc., their labor costs, etc. so they know how to build the best guitar for a given price point.

    I just got an Orangewood Rey Spruce ($135) to take camping and for using casually. The quality is good, the action decent and it sounds decent. My experience with Orangewood's customer service has been great. The first guitar came damaged in shipping (crack in the top) and Orangewood replaced it really fast and were very friendly and professional about it. I own a Taylor 814ce and 814ce-N as well as other higher end guitars. I live 2 miles from the Taylor factory so I've been there multiple times and seen how they make their guitars. The Taylor's are easier to play, sound richer, have a more even tone and are impeccably built with quality wood. However, they cost $3,500. I'm always nervous to take them out unless I'm playing a professional gig where I don't think they are going to get damaged or stolen. Thus far I've been very pleased with the Orangewood and think it is a great value for what you get. I've only had the guitar a few days and we are already good friends.

    Taylor sounds brighter, Orangewood sounds richer. Not $1000 worth of difference to my ears either way. I would hope there's some level of difference in playability, or quality/longevity of construction.

    I think the Taylor likes those strings better than the Orangewood, that and being so much older the wood has had time to breath and settle in.

    Hard to tell a difference to me. The OW sounds warmer and the Taylor sounds a bit brighter. I'd gladly support the local workers first but I don't even have the $650 to buy the foreign made one. I wouldn't trade either for my 1993 Ibanez PF5!

    I am the proud owner of a Taylor since last week. I was at the guitar shop trying out different guitars and I had to have either a Taylor or a Martin, which were the ones that sounded better. I chose the first, which I think is better for fingerpicking (brilliant, crystaline sound), though Martin might be better for strumming (it has a deeper sound, which I love when strumming). I am a fingerpicker, mostly, so it made sense. Both are pricy, of course. It would be great if you could make a video explaining which amplifiers go well with each type of guitar and accordingly to the type of sound you want to achieve. Thanks.:)

    • @dcarts5616
      @dcarts5616 5 лет назад

      José Barros nice choice although I would have chosen a 000. Any version of the 000 from Martin is great for finger picking. 000-18, 000-28, 000-15m. Take your pick. I'll assume you played those though and just couldn't get over how buttery smooth the Taylors play...

    • @josebarros1994
      @josebarros1994 5 лет назад +1

      @@dcarts5616, yes, Taylor (214 cc - K DLX) was easier to play. The notes ring out beautifully and that decided it for me, especially, when playing it with the amplifier, though it was a close call. Actually, I play every weekend with a friend of mine and we are recording some stuff, mainly country-folk songs with a lot of fingerpicking. He bought the Martin I was aiming for so we get to play each other`s guitars, which is nice. I agree with you. Martin is great for fingerpicking, too. I`m not an expert on guitars, just an intermediate player with a love for fingerpicking (Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Mark Kozelek, that sort of thing), so I wanted something that would play well and make those notes ring.

      @@dcarts5616, he bought a Martin 000-15 m - street, I think. I don`t have a great knowledge of models, but I can pick up what I like, because I have a pretty good ear. I know Josh Turner`s videos on Nick Drake. He has 2-3 of them and, of course, he`s a great talent. Especially glad he made a version of Three Hours, which is my favourite Nick Drake song. Although I can`t play it and I won`t even try.:) Pink Moon, I think I can play and maybe Cello Song if I tried really hard. If you like that type of music and you haven`t heard of him yet, check out Bert Jansch. For me (and Johnny Marr), the best accoustic player in that sort of folk / blues style and he influenced Nick Drake. Start out with his last work maybe (The Black Swan - 2006). He was simply amazing. Nice talking to you.:)

    Honestly, the Taylor sounded a lot better . I’m not sure if everyone else was overwhelmed by the price difference or just merely listen with their phone speakers only, but there was a very noticeable difference. The Taylor sounded much warmer. The Orangewood sounded very tinny. It sounded similar to my $400 Fender. Which can sound good with some EQing and a decent acoustic preamp pedal. I was kinda underwhelmed and disappointed by the Orangewood. They seem like a great beginner guitar but I guess as far as intermediate I’ll pass personally. But to each their own, if you can’t hear a difference…certainly saving $1000 makes way more sense. At the end of the day all that really counts is to play what makes you happy and keeps you playing.

    I thought both sounded pretty good. It is obvious that they sound different, so it may just come down to a matter of taste and playability (my opinion!). Taylor 314 new is $2000 and above Oct 2023. The Orangewood Sage Torrefied Spruce is $745 new Oct 2023. If you put a gun to my head I could not tell you which was which in this video without looking. Sean's Taylor GA3 is much older than new, older acoustics supposedly sound better if they are played often, they are used about $1000 if you can find a good one. Used Orangewood Sage Torrefied Spruce go for about $450. Taylor's without doubt have less depreciation and thus higher relevant resale value.

    I honestly don't get why people compare Orangewoods to way more expensive and better sounding guitars. Obviously, no one is actually choosing between this particular Taylor and this Orangewood for their next guitar purchase.
    And if your arguing price vs sound, there's a good chance that something like a Glarry would win because it's only around 10% of the price of the Orangewood and it certainly has more than 10% of the sound... well maybe not that much more than 10%, but more in any case. Also, we all know there's a rule of diminishing returns on all musical instruments, and just about anything else.
    I'd love to hear the Orangewood up against guitars in the same price range produced by established manufacturers. I think, and this is only my opinion, that we would truly find out if the Orangewood really is a bargain. I mean if we compare a Honda against a Rolls Royce, the Honda is going to be a better deal in terms of getting to work every morning, but maybe compared to a Toyota at the same price point things might look different.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

    The Taylor has a very balanced sound. The Orange lacks low end definition. With that as my observation, the Orange would be a great studio instrument in situations where you need a bright acoustic.. or you have a lower singing voice.. it will be a great contrast. To me its about how does the instrument feel and sound .. does it compliment you. Does it’s range fit your style??
