  • In the fourth instalment of the build, I assemble the X and Y Axis and the ACME locking collars. I bought the smaller parts for this machine from aliexpress - which I could buy in bulk saving quite a bit of money, but I decided to get the acme rod and aluminium extrusion from a local company called Ooznest - guaranteeing safe delivery.

    That has the makings of being a fantastic cnc machine. Excellent job. This is probably my favourite ongoing maker project on RUclips just now ☺️👍

      Thanks, that's really nice of you to say. I am thinking of calling this the Mountain CNC - partly because it is based on lots of opensource stuff... which if it was all piled up would make a small mountain.

      Totally agree with you 👍👍

    Excellent progress and build. I'm guessing you're happy to see it come together so well. I'm sure that little bit of play will not be a factor or you will be able to adjust it out once the base plate is installed.

    Hello, great build without spending a lot. Could you tel what x axis maximum size to choose to avoid too much weakness for the grantry ? Yours seems to be 1000mm. Thanks

    Great details on the video. Also, I noted the saw blade you used to cut aluminum bars with. can you share what it is? thank you much!

    Probably a dumb question, but just starting off building stuff, but what type of extruded aluminum beam is that? Trying to find out where I can get it and what it is called.

    Always check if your material is the same length, then it’s only corner to corner squaring. Each stage is a step, stuff up one early step and you’ll be fighting to get it right the entire time.
    Better to take 5 minutes, check everything and then go to the next step.

      Agree, I've learnt a lot since making that video.

    Hi, some if the intolerances may be on account of the tabletop not being really flat, I think. Did you level the frame before measuring?

    • @EducatingSavvas
      @EducatingSavvas  8 лет назад

      I'll have to re-look at that. Maybe place it on the table saw bed. Thanks for the suggestion.

    What type of blade are you using in the chop saw to cut the aluminum rails?

    • @EducatingSavvas
      @EducatingSavvas  8 лет назад

      Just a normal wood blade.

    • @DIY3DTECHcom
      @DIY3DTECHcom 8 лет назад

      Hmm and it dosen't mess it up for cutting wood? I have read that a carbide blade was required.

      @EducatingSavvas  8 лет назад

      Most table saw blade are carbide tipped nowadays. It seems to be ok and I don't cut aluminium 24-7.

    Savvas , can't remember but will you be offering plans for this creation ????

      The build and some early plate designs are available here: www.openbuilds.org/builds/c-beam-lead-screw-cnc-mountain.3947/ - but they are not where near complete and I haven't worked out the cost or material. I might also make a booklet / journal to accompany the videos.

    Good to know I am not the only one who freaks out by not having a perfect machine lol...great job
    If you carve the profile of the extrusions onto the wood brackets..wouldn't that help hold the extrusion and not allow it to move while you screw everything together? (the extrusion would sit on the indentation) ..just a though...I am not a pro...

    • @EducatingSavvas
      @EducatingSavvas  8 лет назад

      Yeah you could, but it would really increase the milling time of all those pieces. It's probably easier to assemble everything on a flats surface.

    Can you please tell me where you got your aluminum rails, there is not one person who will tell me, I want to extend mine. Thanks

    Sir: Is there any chance that I might be able to get the plans for this great machine.

    • @EducatingSavvas
      @EducatingSavvas  7 лет назад

      Look me and other version of the design up on the Open Builds website - but I've only put up the first version of the design. Once I have finished the new controller I will cut out a updated version on the machine itself. That's the plan anyway.

    gotta love aliexpress ;)

    Oy !! ... unless you've used a machinists level to deck the table flat.... nothing can be trusted.
    You can mark out and drill and tap FURNITURE or APPLIANCE LEVELERS into your CNC base so it can be located flat and square on that tabletop.
