Sidenote: the only issue I can see with the 17in wheels + giant front rotor is narrow/rocky trails beating it up/bending it under extreme circumstances. Other than that.... senddd itttt!
Thanks so much for the the vid. Its a huge help. I’ve been looking at the dual sports from Kawasaki and found in 2019 they only have the big KLR that isn’t being made anymore for over $7K after taxes and dealer fees!, or the little klx250, still closer to six grand after fees. I can only assume they will be replacing the KLR in 2020 with something similar to the drz400 with a windscreen? I imagine it will cost a small fortune as the pattern for new bikes are not cheap and not getting any cheaper. I am trying to choose wisely. Through April, Suzuki has 0% financing, so I just might end up with a DRZ400sf like yours even though its not a Kawasaki, like my beloved first and only bike years ago (ninja 600R). Anyway, its a difficult decision which is why I am very thankful for your vid.
Funny That’s the exact set up I’m doing on my drz400sm I just bought I also did a ton of research I like the Yoshimura rs2 full exhaust the best and I really like the Shinko 244s been riding Harley’s for years it’s going to be fun getting back on the dirt trails
I've changed this bike over and over. it is now mostly white. still rocking 244s. my girl rides it. I have another one same year all black. 440 Athena bbk, fcr, Ecams and MRD shorty.
I really don’t think I can bring myself to put knobbies on my SM. The stock Dunlop D208 tires definitely stink in wet/sandy/gravel stuff, but by god they’ll carve up corners on pavement like the bike is welded to the road. It’s so much fun to push this bike over and roll the throttle through a corner. Knobbies would ruin that.
So don't. I've ran them both ways. Sm's are fun on twisty roads. But a drz gets pretty boring on pavement without some big mods. Still a pretty fun bike offroad.
thinking of going the same route...any issues with the larger disc in the dirt hitting rocks or feeling like it wants to wash the front? sick bike, can't wait to put on on the back of our rig. 🤙🏼
I never had any issues with the larger disk... you can tell the front tire is a fatty, definitely not a motocross bike but it worked very well for me. The only downfall for me was the confidence on the street with these. I could not ride as aggressive on pavement. You can break the ass end loose with too much throttle.
@@unclerobb9941 thanks for the response. Yeah, i can see not wanting to push the corners to hard, i've had the ass-end step out at time or two while exiting the corner hard on the throttle...
I did a big bore kit on my other bike which was identical to this one. No way could I run the shinkos on there. Check it out on one of my other videos.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly. The full exhaust was around 475. The pumper carb set up was over $900 the last time I checked. My last drz was an athena 440 with mrd and Fcr. A whole different animal.
MVP comin through with some critical info.
Trying to get my buddy setup for his first ORV experience at a reasonable price.
Much appreciated!

Great video !
Leaning toward the SM version thanks to your info just looks bad ass .
Thanks
I have the same tires on my sm and i love them for both on and off the road
I put some kenda 270s on mine, same setup almost. Drz riding in northern Maine!
The ignition timing and compression ratio are also different on the E model. Compression different is due to multi layered head gasket on non E models
I have a 2015 SM with the shinko's. Great all around set up for what I like to do with it.

I put TKC80 's on my SM. Love it. Nice review
im looking at a set of those for my other sm.
Loved the 244s on my SM!
How many miles did you get out of a rear tire
@@jessadams5927 I don't think I actually wore it out. Seems like about 3000 plus would be normal.

Keep in mind, the profile of the rear tire will cause the rear to washout early and abruptly on pavement with moderate lean angle.
Did you reuse the original tubes?

Beautiful bike.
thanks dude.
check out my other videos of the pair I had.
Did you put the same size in the front as the rear ? Or is the front tire skinnier than the rear ? Thanks nice ride dude
front is a 4.6 and rear is a 5.10 and thanks man.
Header pipe and pumper carb close in price.....what’s up with that? A bent pipe and a well machined intricate assembled device, about the same price.

Did you have to pit a rear tire on the front wheel as well? I couldn't find the front size you have
They are front or rear fitment
www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shinko-244-dual-sport-tires
Ya know?
I dont know
Put on a manual cam chain tensioner and its bulletproof :)
Not necessary. The newer tensioner's work perfectly fine
What kind of rack is that?
I wish i knew myself
was thinking about geting them for my sm what sizes did you get front and back
friberg michael 4.7 front and 5.2 i believe on the back.
What exact size tires and brand did you get and was it a straight swap of the tires?
sorry for the late response, 4.7 front and 5.2 rear I believe.
shinko 244 goldenboys
Nice Brother
What psi do you use on them and did you use tubes
Well they're spooked wheels so yeah you need to run tubes.
Can anybody please confirm the tyre sizes?
The sizes are written down at the beginning of the video description.
