I'll be more helpful, go torrent REALLPC guitar VST and Archetype Gojira amp VST. It is so fantastic sounding and will make you realize under no circumstance should anyone ever use FL Slayer ever ever ever ever ever unless using it in a self-aware joking meme type way.
yeah, I agree with what a lot of other ppl are saying about FL Slayer. it sounds awful by default. it's completely charmless. I guess the designers of FL simply assumed that hp-hop DJ's wouldn't know the difference...and perhaps they're right about that actually. who knows.
god I hate FL Slayer... Mine sounds like it's out of tune, which should be impossible. Sometimes I have this weird violin background sound when I go to higher minors.
It's entirely likely that it IS out of tune. Because of the physical modeling algorithm Slayer uses (especially the normal Slayer, not Slayer 2), it's very easy to get it to sound out of tune simply by changing the velocity. Unfortunately there's not much you can do, they used the wrong kind of lowpass filters in the algorithm. You need to work around it or just use a real guitar. :P
metabog Yeah I admit it might have also been that I didn't know what I was doing. It indeed is easy fuck the tune up, though I think it shouldn't be. After all, I don't know shit about the "music area" compared to what I *could* know, if I bothered more frequently :3.
Very helpful, I've been making the most of what I've got to use, Fl Slayer, Slayer 2, Sakura, FPC, etc. and I can say what I've managed to put together is great material. Thank's for the guide, I owe you one
wow, coming here in 2020, and these tips are still really fantastic. I love it how this plugin all of a sudden sounds way more realistic. No way I would have been able to figure this out myself, so thanks a lot for sharing this !
Hey man i am a techno/ trance producer just recently exploring making metal on fruity loops and just want to say this is a nice tutorial for me , and for the little track u make near the end.. KUDOS!!!! ROCK ON BROTHER !!!!
Very good tutorial on FL Slayer. I didn't know you could simulate palm-muting by lowering the velocity. Electric guitar especially with distortion is really difficult to emulate with a VST synth as there are certain dynamics that are impossible to recreate. Still, I felt you gave it a pretty admirable effort and had some pretty cool riff ideas. The one advantage, at least in the piano roll, is being able to click out a riff idea, practice it on guitar, then record the guitar in the spot you wish to place the recording. Sometimes, doing the piano roll first and then playing guitar with it will lead to some things not realized on guitar alone.
Thank you so so so so much, I been wanting to make tracks with guitar in it and didn't want to use my actual guitar (I don't know how to set it up to get the best quality) So this helps so much!
This is probably just me, but first time i opened up FL Slayer it sounded awesome, and it sounds realisitic to me. Atleast for being generated on a computer. Good vid :)
@Zejex I agree, however not everyone has or knows how to play guitar, and it's also quite useful for laying down temporary guitar before you record real audio. I myself don't ever use Slayer, but it's still a cool little VST.
Very impressive, I learned a lot. So let's say I want a lead guitar in a song, but I honestly can't make Slayer sound good enough. Tips on other VSTis or should I just give up on the whole guitar thing?
thx brother...good vid,,,please make more....just got the producer edition today....the possibilities are mindblowing. that riff u threw together would have worked in the rip off. how funny you did the laugh..I understand the feeling...this shit is powerful indeed.
Holy crap ! You managed to make that thing sound good ! I'll admit I had absolutely no expectation when I stumbled on this. I never use slayer, I even removed it from my plugin list! And It makes me cringe everytimes I can hear the very recognizable "sound signature" that the slayer vsti leaves whenever I listen to another song that uses it! But you managed to avoid it! Awesome !
Thank you man! This is not what I am looking for, but its sick. I wish I could get a clean sounding guitar on fl somehow, since I dont have good recording equipment to use my real guitars.
@LyripsBeatzOfficial Can you please define what it means for a VST plugin to be "low quality"? Slayer is a top notch Karplus-Strong-based plugin based on years of research into physical modeling. It has controls for every parameter and avoids almost all the pitfalls of the KS algorithm, and, to top that, it even includes a good quality Amp and Cabinet simulator. I think you are taking the technology for granted. It's only going to sound as good as you can make it sound.
Hmm, I don't know if you'll reply to this but any idea? I'm changing the note velocity just as you are in this video, and nothing sounds any different. Do I need to change some setting somewhere?
You demonstrated two significant points the average FL Studio owner discovers while using Slayer w/o ever watching a tut (or this one). Damp tweaking is almost immediate upon note composition since nearly every "Preset" in Slayer has Damp turned up. Elementary, dude. Note velocity tweaking is usually learned with other VSTi prior to creating guitar-based songs with Slayer. The key to making Slayer sound awesome is not rooted in Damp & Note Velocity. The key is 1st Scale Selection & Preset. (Which is what you did during the "cut" and failed to articulate.) Certain Note Scales only sound good with certain Presets or the Default sound. 2nd, is the Mode (certain Modes don't output harmonic quality with certain Note "lengths" and "step" position. (Which is what you worked out during the "cut".) Damp & Velocity are executed on Second Base, not straight out the dugout.
Yup. Create a 'Layer' channel in FL. Then make your two other instrument channels. Then open up the layer, and there's a button that says 'set children'. First shift-click to select the channels you want as children (click on the little LED to the right of them) and then click set children. Then you can play both (or as many as you want) by playing the layer channel.
@pyr666 Well I'm on my second university degree on this now, but basically all you need to do is have patience and approach the problem with patience rather than quitting the moment it sounds bad and saying "oh I need another VST". The point of this video really is to showcase that you don't need to spend a lot of money to get a decent sound, because all the different products out there do all the same things, but people really only buy them because they want to be given some presets.
im a real guitar player, and im glade i seen the vid be for i did a comment. wow this was cool got a tip for you, they have a new midi gear out for people that play guitar, call,d (you rock guitar midi control) cheep 199. with wht you did hear and with that gear you be a ripping rock god with the setting,s you just set up wow also i sub you your cool
@pyr666 Once you've got the basic ideas behind synthesis and MIDI, it won't take you long to understand how to use basically any plug-in and be creative. The main thing I want to stress is don't expect to always be given good sounding settings out of the box.
Electri6ity is $400. At that price you might as well get a real guitar or guitarist. Slayer will always be "shit" (as you say) compared to a library of samples, but there are ways to get a decent sound out of it as a temporary instrument.
Something that I found quite useful was actually setting all the amp settings to dry and putting the Slayer through Hardcore. It has a lot more options, and can sound much more realistic. It isn't very good at rhythm, but for lead, it is definitely much better.
FL Slayer at 4:06 - 4:21 sounds like a harpsichord to me. I think if I was to use the plugin, this would be how I approach it. Not as a guitar, with palm mutes & all that, but as a harpsichord.
is there a way btw, that I can add combine instruments? for example, say whatever I play with reallife hardware keybooard, gets played as both strings and piano at the same time through midi? Could be very naive question, but I am able to play only one instrument at a time using midi cable...
@metabog Well by Djent... i guess I mean Dubstep because they both have that "digital piercing" sound to them, with really juicy digital bass. I know what you mean hating those bands, thats why I just listen to instrumental Djent. Buttersnips by Bulb is pretty cool
Me think that's not necessary, and you can't program the slayer track nicely when the dampening depends on the plucking velocity, i think,.. when you turn down the volume of some notes, dampening occurs... How about right click on the 'damp'- edit events..?
hey i got a quick question, cuz i really admire all of this skill. Im just getting into this whole program deal so i dont know shit lol. Did you do this all on fl studio? Did all of the sounds come with it, or how does this work?
I'm trying to make Guilty Gear/BlazBlue style music, yet am struggling to find a good program without having to rely on Slayer. But if push comes to shove, how would I go about making that style using Slayer?
I remember I could make it sound decent, not realistic but heavy and good for someone that does not have a real guitar, it is very hard to achieve such quality though
Hello Any chances you can post an example FLP? Do you own FL Slayer 2 as well? You seem to know quite a bit, a good tutorial explaining FL SLayer 2 features would be great as well
Somehow this is still super helpful 10 years later.

Dayon Mage lol I swear Swanton Bomb by Keith Ape uses FL Slayer
Mike Shinoda does Rock (Linkin Park) and hip hop (Fort Minor) pretty damn well if you ask me.
@@MacDaddyBlack546 lol I always thought it was a sample but watching this video it honestly could be

Very encouraging man. And I love that short song you did. Did you finish it? I wanna hear the final product if it exists. Great job man

The best tutorial about FL Slayer.

@Panman14 That's the mixer, the most important and basic thing in FL Studio.

Thanks for the tutorial. I actually learned something from this tutorial unlike some of the other tutorials for FL Slayer. Thumbs up man.
You can definitely do better than Slayer. Revitar for example is better sounding to my ears. But I still think there is more to be said about Slayer.
It is, but with a bit of tweaking you can turn off the body modeling and get something more similar to the output of a clean electric guitar.
@slashmole I will probably try to do a tutorial on that as I've started to "get" Djent tones, though I kind of hate most bands in that genre.
2010 video and still amazingly usefull. Thank you.
@dw1664 I'd like to say anything is possible, but I've yet to see an actual guitarist emulate the sweet Gilmour-esque vibrato. :P
It's good, but not everyone owns Guitar Rig or an expensive amp sim, which is why I don't use it in the tutorials.
@kettuja If you like Ayreon you might like my band Abodean Skye then. Do a search. :) Cheers, thanks for watching.
What the hell? You can drag the pick-up!? =O Now I just have to figure out if its possible to fix the damn pitch.
Thanks!
Buy Steven Slate Drums. Quite cheap and they sound excellent. It's what I use now.

there's a buzz sound in my version of the generator im not understanding how to make it stop and make it sound lik your tunes in the vid
