  • One year after her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis at the young age of 15, Kayla Montgomery - a member of the Mount Tabor High School Cross Country team - was afraid, angry, and bitter. Far from the peak of health when she was diagnosed, she lived in denial of her illness until she realized that this was doing more harm than good. Then Kayla found a way to use the negativity that almost consumed her to help her understand and appreciate the positive things in her life that she could control. Her health improved. Her grades improved. And yes, her running improved. Kayla went undefeated in her senior year of cross country, earned three state titles, and now runs at the NCAA Division 1 level for Lipscomb University, where she helped her team win their fourth consecutive cross country conference title.
Kayla Montgomery was an avid soccer player as a child, but at the age of fifteen was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, commonly called MS. In spite of the condition, Kayla continued to run competitively for her high school’s cross country team. Initially she was an average runner that showed little promise, but with perseverance and dedication, Montgomery was able to become one of the best distance runners in North Carolina state history, winning three state titles and the 2013 North Carolina Gatorade runner of the year following an undefeated cross country season during her senior year.
Kayla Montgomery’s success as an athlete battling Multiple Sclerosis has gained her national attention allowing her to build a platform to help raise awareness for MS. She has been featured on the Today Show, the New York Times, and ESPN E:60 among others.

I have found having a positive attitude with having MS is a bonus to our health. The more you stay positive the better you do. Don’t let stress be the thing that takes all that away. It’s hard to go back positive when you’re always worrying about things you can’t control. I have had more stress in the last 10 yrs than my whole life and my body is paying for it. I now have more flare ups and I don’t like the way I feel sick all the time. I need to find some motivational speakers so I can have my health back. I have herd this my whole life don’t sweat the small stuff live life positive. Thank You for your voice it got me thinking again.

So glad to know I'm not the only one. Lots of people dont believe I have MS because I go for walks and they don't. They just don't understand.

In the same boat. Had to quit the physical activities I liked before being diagnosed with MS. Gave up Krav Maga, running, and HIIT workouts. My MS damaged my vestibular system. When I get hot, I get vertigo and my vision degrades. I’m learning to live with the disease and have started running and doing HIIT workouts again. Hope to get back into martial arts soon! She has the right perspective. MS is not a death sentence or and excuse to stop living!

Joseph my wife always tells me that ms is not a death sentence. But sometimes it can be so depressing like fatigue and feet paresthesia

@@shawnmcanthony5724 since that comment, physical therapy and strength training has got me about 90% back to my normal self. I know I am one flare away from a complete reset. Constantly starting over is the worst part of MS.

This showed up in my feed the day after I watched the mini documentary on Kayla while she was in high school. I have recently had something happen in my life that is very difficult. And right at the time I needed it, 4 years, after her talk, I found it. It was perfect timing. Thank you, Kayla, for the message. And thank God that He showed this to me at this difficult time.

Thank you. I have now nearly 2 decades a illness which is nothing compared to MS, but anyway is a disease were my system attacks my body. It limits me, but for luck and help (and alternative methods like homeopathy and acupuncture, after years of tours trough pharma and standard medicine) I seldom have pain, and can walk and sense.
Anyway, the limitations are a big frustration. What you say does not sound easy, and I don't know if I will succeed to accomplish such a big change in my attitude to frustration and denial. But your talk gives me some good tools to help me continue the fight of changing my way of looking at something which is part of me, and against my biggest enemy, also part of myself: self-pity.

Kayla, can you provide some information on staying cool in the hot weather? Have you learned any tips. I have MS and am running my first half marathon in the spring. I am concerned about over heating and am thinking of trying a cooling vest. If you know of anything that seems to work please share. I am so proud of you for sharing your story!!

Did you end up running the race? How did it go?
I don't have MS, but I was born without working sweat glands, so I overheat very easily and have had heatstroke. I can give you tips on staying cool, if you want or need them.

Have a methylmalonic acid blood test done, which will show the B12 tissue level. A low B12 is often misdiagnosed as MS because the symptoms are identical.

you see the fact you are able to see, not others (like a photo: shows the chosen facts). things you are not able to see, like that she made something uncommon for MS-diagnostized patients: start a sport carrier. And win the first prices.
Pain is something difficult to overcome. It is easy to feel victimized. Call that a fact, if you want, surely you can find statistics for that. Force of will is not something pharma-treatments can give you. All in this you can't find numbers your number for your objectivity, or watch the film Gattaca :)

I think you are totally missing the point of her talk. I too have MS which it sucks and she does not deny that. She has however made a choice to try to use the negative to build something positive in her life. We all have that choice and she is trying to encourage us to make it. As she said, its a choice that must be made every day. I appreciate that she chooses to do so and try to do the same.

    • @Nitshaye14
      @Nitshaye14 7 лет назад +2

I think it's really easy to talk and say whatever you feel like when you're not in their position. I was diagnosed recently and i know what she is talking about. and i think she's doing an amazing job. I don't need statistics and math to know what she can or cannot do. this disease may not affect our nerve system like that at right away. If you need proof go learn something real about it, because sports improve the nerve comunication and because of that she can do what she's doing. On
