- So kids, what have we learned from today's history lesson? Well, Britain's relationship with its colonies and dominions had all the signs of an abusive relationship if it were between humans. Here's our friend Riz Ahmed beautifully developing this theme. • Riz Ahmed - The Breaku...

That was my favourite part of the song
And the glitch made it better

@@nathanhutton1598AND NO, DONT CHANGE THE SUBJECT
King George has to be the most fun part to play in Hamilton. He only has a few short but very catchy & memorable songs & he gets the whole stage to himself to perform
Have you seen Jonathan Groff’s King George? All the various King George’s are sooo different and I love that, buy Johnathan’s my favorite.
He steals his own solo scenes. No Hamlet ever did that.
It's Putin 2022.
@@WhiteCamry He does. Which is a truly impressive feat. I think it's that the actor playing King George III gets to go full villain reveling in his villainy for the song.
I mean, we can take a historical perspective and say George had mental problems, and also, having never been to the colonies, had no clue or understanding about the practical conditions the triangle trade and the taxes were creating, and that lack of understanding is why he acted as he did. But in the end, this is probably one of the most accurate bits in Hamilton.
@@jenniferhanses7064Well, and also Parliament was responsible for most of the really crappy stuff. New York actually put up a gilded statue of him, which shortly thereafter was melted down for bullets. Also, he was pudgy, interested in farming, and never dressed like that except for his coronation portrait, but other than THAT, totally accurate.
It doesn’t matter, because George III, the tyrannical mad king who wears silk and eats babies for breakfast is a powerful part of American mythology. It’s a way a young country defined itself: what we are is not like that. Also, it’s really funny, but accurate, no.
It's interesting seeing how different countries play this song based on their relationship to England, America and royalty. Australia's version played by Brent Hill made the material work really well over here.
How great was Brent HIll! I honestly enjoyed him more than Johnathon Groff but I agree, I think it made it more funny considering Australia is still tied to England so it connected with us more.
Im so excited to see it at my city in Australia next year!
@@em84c I saw it in Melbourne this year and it was amazing
In our show when king George got to the line “kill your friends and family” he paused for almost a minute and just stared into the audience, then he finished the song. He also was just more funny
@@PurplePandaGuy88 that part was amazing! He also does a spot on trump impression
This popped up on my feed as my other screen was showing footage of the ol' "RC3" Coronation. Now I just wish King Charles has somehow worked a "dadadah da dah" into that somehow.
I love how matter of fact he delivered the line “kill your friends and family”
It definitely didn't get the reaction it deserved! He hit the timing so we'll!
He's like "you think I'm joking, I'm not. I will do it."
What a beautiful voice. I could listen to him sing all day.
Agreed. Not handsome, dishy, at all. But he can sing. And I'm a fan.
Forever, and ever, and ever....
@@sancalisto2371 I went to school with Gavin, was about 4 years below him. Let me tell you, he was absolutely THE school heartthrob! He played Tony in West Side Story when he was a 6th-former, and being part of the chorus I had to stand next to him on a balcony during 'Tonight'. I remember the railing of the balcony we were all holding shaking from the power of his singing. It's so nice to see he's done so well.
I love this version. Less overtly comedic, more menace simmering just underneath the surface.
Definitely less comedic than Groff. But for me, the genius of how Groff plays it is that while it’s comedic, you can see King George’s devolution into insanity brewing below the surface and even the funny lines and the way he delivers them carry a hint of insanity, particularly because of how intense he is.
Dude the song is supposed to be overtly comedic.
"I will send you a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love..." followed by la da Das.
Yeah, it was written by LMM to be overly comedic
This wasn't nearly as good as Jonathan Groff's version.
It’s meant to be overly comedic because king George was mad/mentally insane. So lines like “I’ll send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love.” Is meant to show his ridiculous thought process because of the way his mental illnesses made his brain think
@@duckmcgee2087 It's thought that he may have have suffered from Bipolar disorder. That doesn't mean he was incapable of rational thought. Even after the independence of the USA, King George III played a pivotal role in inspiring his nation's resistance to Napoleon.
I love how he leaves the line “to kill your friends and family” right there in the air to sink in
Just became a massive fan of Jonathan Groff, but this Brit dude is brilliant too.
Watching talent at this level is such a joy. Bravo.
I saw Gavin Spokes in One man two guvnors and he was superb in that as he does comedy really well.
This is gloriously creepy and disturbing. (This is 100% a compliment). I love seeing so many great performers put a different spin on this character.
Think Putin 2022.
What a brilliant singer he is
No one will sing this better than Jonathan Groff
@@djjdjdj8383 groff is the best American version. Gavin Spokes is the best uk version and probably my favourite
@@djjdjdj8383 I like him but he spits to much. I like Michael Jibsen.
No one will be better than Johnathan Groff.
@@allies7184 On purpose. King George had gone mad and it was reported he would sometimes foam at his mouth.
I genuinely wish this had an insane dance break like Herods Song in JCSS.
certain productions do, not full insane like herods but exactly what you expect from it
hahaa that would be exciting to see
Agree apart from the term 'insane'
ME TOO! The first time I watched this i was anticipating one, and was mildly disappointed he didn't take his sceptre and do a lil cabaret thing
Definitely hints of Lloyd Webber in both the King tracks and Jefferson's introduction.
I'm a little scared of this King George.
This is like if Boris Johnson and Donald Trump had a baby and that baby grew up and became a 18th century singing king.
Except that George III was actually competent.
@@Pseudowolf Unfortunately, alongside losing the American colonies the other thing George III was known for was going mad... He's even portrayed that way in the show:
King George III is perceived in the show to be insane, claiming that "When push comes to shove, I will kill your friends and family, to remind you of my love.” In fact, the king did suffer bouts of insanity which many have claimed to have been porphyria, and some say that his medicine, which contained large amounts of arsenic, worsened his condition. (From the Hamilton Wikipedia)
@@nate6511 It’s sad that he gets a bad rap here in the USA
Well, he rightfully deserves it here in the US. He quarreled with us not once, but twice. Even if the second time was instigated.
He also did go mad, so it is understandable that he is portrayed in such a light.
Trust me, you’d 100% rather have Trump or Johnson over good old King George.
He gave me a fresh perspective on this character. I just wish he walked because it feels like I am watching a challenge where he needs to balance the crown while singing.
He does. That crown weighs about 3lbs and his mic is attached to it.
@@ajrobinson729 Oh, i guess that's why. Thanks for the information, AJ!
This King George 🤴 has a better grasp of the character and that the song was intended to be a break up letter to America than some of the other actors, but it doesn't have the charm and dramatically kinky subtext of obsession like Groff's version. Nor does it have the sass and playfulness. Groff's portrayl is just so amazingly perfect. Like clearly Groff really understands the meaning of the song and connects with the character on a whole other level to all the other actors. You feel that obsessive, crazy love when Groff sings it. Groff also just has such amazing vocal technique that he manages to make seamless and look natural but is actually very highly technical and tricky.
It is a wonderful song that has so much history, culture and meaning in it with such a boppy catchy tune. While other actors do great performances of it, Groff just absolutely nailed it to perfection.
It is my absolute favourite of all the songs in Hamilton.
i quite like michael jibson's performance, for being radically different from groff's. this version feels like it's trying to hit the same beats as groff's, but kind of pales in comparison. michael jibson is playing the character more straight, as a sadistic royal, and i'm here for it and for his very different interpretation.
You explained it to perfection, Groff was perfect just perfect and anyone would pale in comparison.
Gavin is my favourite George 😍 His delivery of ‘of my love’ @ 2:46 is KILLER
Saw this bloke in “One man, two guvnors”. Great actor, singer and so much energy especially for a bigger man
Bigger people can be just as energetic as thinner people.
@@demonicfurniture8692
I know that as I am bigger too!! It’s the inside organs that matter and not the outside! Even super thin or “normal” sized people can die from heart failure, diabetes, cancer etc.
Was just meaning it’s great to see a bigger person have so much energy as it shouldn’t just be reserved for the thin!!
I love the full orchestra!!!
I couldn't imagine being under all those layers, under those spotlights, and under the scrutiny of the audience. I would be dehydrated from sweating by the halfway mark.
One of my favorite version of King George the third!
This guy is seriously good. Never seen/heard before. But I'm actually smiling now.
Talent and effort is such a joy to behold. Thanks to all involved. Bravi!
I love him and Jeff, they are the best kings ever in Hamilton...
Awesome version. I love Michael Jibson’s a lot too 😊
I used to do shows with Gavin when he was an amateur. A great star. Brilliant in One Man two Guvnors
What... ? You did? Tell us more!
Talented chap.
Fun fact, the guy in the chorus at 3:05 wearing the Beret is the current King George in Hamilton West end. Joel Montague.
That is indeed, a fun fact.
I LOVE JOEL MONTAGUE
Very good, but Groff set the standard.
This is theatre and live performance in which artists can bring different interpretations to a role, if you want definitive stick to movies
@@jonldn A different interpretation would be awesome. Stokes is decent, but he brings nothing to the song. He mostly mimics Groff, without the humor.
@@nancyhallatr and you can confirm you saw him live doing this role? Maybe the director of this production whilst acknowledging other performers , wanted and used different approaches. Maybe in this performance the actor wanted to try something different. It’s live theatre and the joy of it not being set in aspic seems to get lost on the armchair critics of you tube…
@@jonldn Can't afford Hamilton tickets. I'm basing my comment on this performance. My point is that this "approach" is NOT different. He's imitating Groff. Even if I'd seen this live, he would still have been imitating Groff. How would I see him not imitating Groff if I went to this show and he was imitating Groff?
@@nancyhallatr You are missing the point...in concert a performer can bring their own stamp ... in a show the performer has to bring the performance that the author director and sometimes the originator of the role brings ..yes they can add to this when then can and they do... my point is that its a live and ongoing process and the negativity as many do on You Tube can be damaging and missing the point - also frankly a display of arrogance that a single point of view has to be agreed to and not open for discussion . To me he is not "Imitating Groff" he is performing the role as the author -director - etc want in the show.
My dads best mate lol 🤣🤣🤣 he’s been round my house like so many times
Its almost like Great Britain is sending us a message.
oh my.. he is Lyonel Strong ?!! the hand??! wow.
He is okay but no one can be better than Jonathan Groff, the best King George III
Agreeed!
If you guys had seen the absolute magic Brian D'Arcy James did with it at the Public, you would never say this. His will always be THE King George to me
Gavin is brilliant- saw him in the Sydney production of Hamilton
Cannot wait to see this guy in November!
No cap I was listening to this while playing Roblox and when he said "You cry" the oof sound came on
One of the few character choices based on the costume.
Very good. Would love to see Tim Curry do a cover of this as well.
This is a more devious version of King George.. I dig it.
He’s good. But Groff can’t be matched. He owns the role.
I don't know. Have you seen the Australian one?
@@Harold_Wilson Brent Hill nailed it as the king imo
Yes, kinda... But this dude is brilliant too. I really like this. Bravo.
Anita agree Groff is King George, best part of the whole musical.
Love this version 😊
Same he is such amazing singer
He's facing the back of the stage and pretending to be looking at a non existant audience when hes really staring at the back of the stage
That is an illusion backdrop
Good stuff wish there was a version of this without the glitches
I'm probably going to do a re upload soon
He didnt say back like "beCK" which makes me sad
frl 😔
Do Britts love and adore this character and song as much as we do in the States? What was your thoughts about the play overall?
As a Brit I can confirm that this character is my favourite of the whole musical! :)
@@mushroomsandtea mine too !
Yes
Absolutely. This song got stuck in my head immediately after seeing it for the first time.
@@ShenDoodles - When I first saw the beginning of the play, I immediately liked the songs and choreography. When I reached the first King scene, I was dead 😂🤪. You got me Lin Manuel; hook, line, and sinker!
I very briefly met him in my uni, he was a nice bloke, but I didn't know that he was an actor/singer at the time!
I like the change for the final big Daaaaaaa, he instead goes over the "a" and inserts a da-yaaaaa. A stylistic choice for sure but it went over well.
That was really good.
Dear lord! That was amazing/
This is my Dream Singing that song on a stage on a theatre🥰✨
The only character in this musical that was worthy
just wow... this is awesome
Not the original, but every bit as good as Jonathan Groff. Enjoyed this SO much!
Oh, he's hella good!!!
Lord Lyonellllllllll
Very good I was extremely impressed as a huge Hamilton fan
i perfer him to the original one and this is why. he is bigger which is so accurate cos rich ppl in them days purposely got fat to show off their wealth. this was a thing cos a poor person could never get fat, it just didnt happen. also the man sounds more british and has better acting skills overall. very impressive
Honestly,I still prefer Geoff’s version. Just how he portrays the almost sadistic nature of his character and how he has an almost sass in the way he sings, yet still on the surface being a playful little song
This version is definitely played more serious but to me loses the more comedic nature this role was meant for. It wasn’t a bad performance but I didn’t like the direction he took with the character overall
I think you need to take into account that playing King George in America and in the UK kind of have to be different in order to appeal to the different audiences while also keeping it respectful (the last thing you want is the monarchy feeling like you’re mocking their ancestry!!)
I think it’s def played more subtlety and sinister as opposed to camp and outwardly comedic, but think it works better for our audience
He looks like a fluffy marshmallow 💖💖💖
Really good honestly even compared to Jonathan, who I love.
Yes, Jonathan is best, but I love how others interpret King George, too.
Not my favorite version of this song....but it's also not the worst I've heard.... The shoulder shimmy was kinda cringe though
If Wilson Fisk did musicals.
I like the difference between the American and British actors' depictions of this role.
Rip to him ❤
He could play Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle in a biopic. Looks a lot like him.
Doubt any of the young theatre kids will get that reference, but I do!
@@olly-kai Don't be so sure! I've seen him in several early Buster keaton shorts
Yep, so he does. Really should be a proper film about the way his life was destroyed.
He played Oliver Hardy.

His voice is actually really good tbh.
He is great 👍

The only redeemable part of this "musical".
'I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love" that always gets me
This literally Daydream Believer by the Monkees
I would prefer to see him play George IV. That would be hilarious. He seems better suited for him.
I am going to see Hamilton on its first UK tour in 2025. Still not sure if I will like it with all the rap songs but I’m sure looking forward to this song and I will have learned all the lyrics before I go to MIME along with- patrons PLEASE don’t sing aloud as it’s distracting and disrespectful for the hard working actors.
Norm Scully really traded up in professions after he retired from Brooklyn nine nine
Larys Strong saw through the eyes of a rat how his father sings this song in this suit and thought that lord Lyonel Strong wanted to seize power in the kingdom and decided to kill him. And you are all "Alicent's feets, Alicent's feets"🤣

A bit of the Beatles
There such a massive difference between this and Jonathon Groff's version. This guy rushes the lyrics and Goff works them and uses them for dramatic effect.
He’s not singing it in a musical style play. He’s singing it as a song in front of an audience. There is a difference between singing a song theatrically and the more conventional way.
Good performance, but without the intensity of Jonathon Groff. Kind of lackluster, imho
This guy took all of the joy out of the song. It’s supposed to provide comedic relief…
Derivative performance ….
Me likey.
In your description you mentioned the relationship between Britain and it's dominions and colonies. However although it was the British forces, it was the English that did it all. People seem to forget that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are currently English colonies.
Very true. But the colonised can also colonise.

Scotland has its own government. Wales has its own government. Northern Ireland has its own government. There is no government for English people we have the British government ruling us we are not represented as a people.
@@Deeppurple-l7f The British Government is over represented by English MPs. It is practically an English government with a few visiting mps
Probably my favourite George.

He didn’t put the mad as a hatter edge to it which made it so fantastic. Disappointed. Jonathan Groff got it right. This guy could pull it off vocally he is good but just misses what makes this song work. Too bad
Nope once you see Jonathan Groff do it, NO ONE CAN DO IT LIKE JONATHAN GROFF!

Not even remotely as good as Jonathon Groff. It's like there is no personality showing through. The couple of things he does is predictable. He needed to be bigger than life and really use this number. It's meant to be comedic, and it's played just a little too seriously.
You're right, I'm sure Gavin won't be able to make it if if not for your helpful advice. I'm sorry did you just give notes to a West End actor??? That's hilarious.
@@demonicfurniture8692 - doesn't mean he is wrong though, does it sweetling. Next time how about responding to the substance of his opinion. Just a thought.
Gavin looks like the pasty, florid, English pudding that King George probably resembled in real life. Well done Britain, at least in this one way, you have exceeded the original American production.
@@anthonyburn1010 Don't use that sexist, patronising language towards me. And bold of you to assume Dawn goes by he/him pronouns.
I'm with you on this, Dawn - this guy is clearly a brilliant and capable performer, but all the rich comedy of the character is missing in this guy's performance. Groff made him delightfully narcissistic with more than a hint of madness amid a hefty dose of irreverence. Groff hit all the right notes in the character while this guy only gives an obligatory nod to these things. There's no comparison at all, really - Groff far outshines him.
