Public performance of piano music could not possibly get any better than this. Every aspect of this performance is fully realized and absolutely superb. There are no "bad" pianists today who are capable of entering these big competitions, but THIS young man stands out as a champion among the many giants who overcrowd the field. That today's young competitors play FAR better than most of the established great and famed artists of the past is a tragic irony in a world where public interest in serious music seems to be waining more and more with each passing year. Well GOD BLESS YOU, Dmitry, and may you know nothing but JOY in your exquisite talent. What the JUDGES apparently thought of you has nothing to do with who and what you are. It only reflects THEIR stupidity, or their CORRUPTION. I see you as a LIVING MIRACLE.

I have listened to Dmitry Shishkin version of Concerto in E minor twice,1st time before others participants and 2nd time after and I dare to say that his performance is the best of all!He don't afraid of using pianissimo according to his aristocratic taste and at the same time he achieved full harmony with the orchestra.

      This performance is very good!
sometimes too lightly and gently ....!? ;-)

    • @loyeeon471
      @loyeeon471 8 лет назад +10

There is no sin in playing lightly and gently, IF every note is clearly sounding that makes musical sense, i.e., having a correct articulatory relationship with the whole, and IF the tone still radiates with a quality that pleases the ear.
That is exactly how this performance strikes me.
It's a virtue - not a shortcoming - the way Dimitry Shishkin played with the Warsaw Philharmonic orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Jacek Kaspszyk, in the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall.
In this performance, the orchestra comes through beautifully. Every tone is so pure and so supportive of the others. While some other performances in this competition sound busy, chaotic, and even noisy, this one sounds quiet by comparison, yes, but exceptionally pure and peaceful. In the 3rd movement, I can imagine Chopin hopping and skipping through a broad quiet Warsaw street in an early morning, all by himself and hearing his own steps, full of bliss.

  • @loyeeon471

On the 2nd movement of the e minor concerto, beginning at 22:52 of this clip.
The overpowering impression of this particular performance of the Romanze is: It's still; it's limpid; and it's dreamy. Above all, it's always sensuous and beautiful.
The cantabile in the myriad of pearl-like rolling variations of the solo floats and glitters above. But it never ever masks the ever-so-gentle, recurrent, murmuring interchange between the bassoon and the low strings in B major (the dominant of E - the key of this movement) that begins in Rehearsal A (measure 31), that cradles and soothes my ears.
And you can see that's what Chopin had intended and, in fact, how Hector Berlioz had responded when he heard Chopin himself play this movement. Cheers.

Things that were good four years ago remain good. I still like to come back and listen to this excellent performance once in a while. But i hope he now has a little time to expand his Chopin repertoire since winning the Second prize at the International Tchaikovsky this summer.
Dmitry played an excellent 2nd round and was a favorite, at least for someone like me, to win the top prize, having also heard his concerto performances. But it is rare that pure musical reasoning alone determines the final outcome in a piano competition like the Tchaikovsky event.
    Bravo!

Agree with your comment. Among young pianists, Shiskin rendition and Trifonov's version were very impressive. On the competition issue, back in the past, there were some years of competition that the runner up flourished in the piano world more than the winner. For good manner let's not mention the names here.

And... there are so many of those glittering runs in the concerto we also hear an abundance of in op.10 too. Shishkin's execution is fantastic!

+lo yeeOn The music from 40:07 on to the end (of this recording) - for more than 3 full minutes - i.e., the final push toward climax that begins at measure 340 of the 3rd movement, which is 16 measures before the rehearsal number H in the Jan Ekier Chopin National edition, a three-octave run based on the melodic minor scale of C# minor that is then immediately followed by a playful double time "retreat" over two octaves (in harmonic minor) on the left hand that winds up with a "la-si-la-um ", "la-si-la-um" loop that becomes the great beginning of the finale, which is reminiscent of the awe-inspiring C major Etude of Op.10. It is so beautiful, so enthralling, it's beyond words. It was Chopin's unique pianism and it was the work of a genius. At age 20, not Liszt, nor even Beethoven could compare. Few recordings on RUclips are as good as this - and certainly no other finalists who played this concerto last year were as good. Cheers.

+lo yeeOn In this concerto, the long lines and broad sweeps make Chopin more classical than Mozart and Clementi. Classicism as a style aims for what is often known as nobility - balance, steadiness, and above all a sense of calm and simplicity. The Chopin in this recording strongly suggests those qualities. Clearly benefited by having pianos with a keyboard with more octaves and a greater soundboard of his time than those available in Mozart's, Chopin exploited his advantage and succeeded in extending the ideals of classicism, as demonstrated by what he wrought in this concerto.
Yet, Chopin was also at the same time as modern as Prokofiev, who came almost a century later and wrote many works for the piano with brilliant and chiseled sonorities. In the latter respect, Chopin separated himself from his famous contemporary and another prodigy Felix Mendelssohn, whose work was typically built on more conventional harmony. I have never realized the significance of the e minor concerto until after hearing Dimitry Shishkin play it with the Warsaw Philharmonic - an unforgettable collaboration.

+lo yeeOn Dimitry's virtuosity breathes. It's not hurried, not mannered, nor wayward. It's always beautiful; it's epic classicism. If you're in a hurry, at least listen to the last few minutes beginning at 40:08. Cheers.

The tone of that Yamaha piano is perfect for the second movement. I'm sure that the bassoon player enjoyed playing his solo to that heavenly accompaniment. The tone seems to be softer & a little cushioned compared to some of the other pianos. Both Dmitry & Eric Lu have those long, lean & incredible fingers that my piano teacher would say are "perfect" for the piano. It is definitely a wonderful performance & interpretation. Bravo Mr. Dmitry!!!

he played so many of the "immature" pieces in this competition (whether meaning by chopin actually being young, like playing op.1, or whether the chopin pieces that are played frequently by young pianists, like fantasie-impromptu op. 61), but i think his strategy was to show the artistry in chopin's earliest work, and also bring out new sides to pieces people have heard sick, like fantasie-impromptu lol. i think it worked!
