Joe Lieberman's Farewell, Will He Be Missed?

  • "It was a lonely farewell for Joe Lieberman.
When the senior senator from Connecticut stood to give his parting address Wednesday afternoon, just one of his colleagues, Delaware Democrat Tom Carper, was with him on the Senate floor.
As Lieberman plodded through his speech, thanking everybody from his wife to the Capitol maintenance crews, a few longtime friends trickled in."*
Joe Lieberman ended his term in the senate with a scarcely attended speech. Will he be missed? Is it due to his final thoughts on War? Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

We in the US are very far from pure when it comes to adhering to our historic and stated principles. Seems to me that the way forward (for Israel) is to tell the 'greater Israel' folks to stick it, do a two-state, and start building as a responsible, ethical, and respected nation. You-all seem well endowed with at least the human resources needed.
BTW we should be doing the same. Getting rid of Lieberman is getting rid of a _small part_ of our troubles but it is delightful none-the-less.

As I read things, Lieberman has done pretty well financially even during his protracted period of 'public service', and he has (to his credit) things which mean more to him than money. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Obama does not appoint him to a more influential post than he'd have as a corp-gov lobbyist. And since clearly his peers rightfully despise him (likely many consider him a traitor) he may not be the most effective lobbyist anyway.

My local supermarket is doing a fundraiser to provide a holiday meal for one of the air craft carriers.
My first thought is...... We're not already providing them a nice holiday meal for those serving in the military?
ONE weapon on that ship cost more then the yearly budget for many entire towns, but we don't spend enough on military to give them a fucking nice holiday meal?

Connecticut is very affluent. Richest state. Few of their kids were going to serve. And people in that state are heavily involved in Wall Street. The military/industrial/security State and the banking cartel make a lot of money (extorted from the general public) on making things that blow up. However, things that blow up do not make us more prosperous. Of safer for that matter. Supporting the M/I/S/State does make a lot of people wealthy.

That we are currently living under what could reasonably be classified as marshal law is kind of absurd. But the hypothesis that certain legal constructs are currently in effect and are for all intents and purposes 'secret' is an interesting one with some explanatory powers. I don't write it off.
I also don't write off the possibility that a certain degree of private arms ownership complicates a decision to employ marshal law as a problem solving tool. Whether a pro or con is debatable.

I didn't agree with him on every issue either, but I respected that he served the public most of his life with decorum. He respected his rivals for their service to the other half of our country. Their will always be city folk & country folk, & both deserve representation. He wasn't at all an extremist, yet you talk about him as tho he were; even right after his death. I remember you differently. You use to have a lil decency. What happened ?

Although I believe that Gore could have gone down as one of most effective and best presidents ever, I am am actually about 50/50 on whether I'm glad that he 'lost' to Bush and the ONLY reason is because of Lieberman as VP. I think that there is a non-trivial chance that Lieberman would not have stayed VP for long and that things would look much different, and much worse, than they do today in terms of our 'foreign entanglements.'

Say what you will about politicians, I have never seen a man flip so many sides in some Game of Thrones-esque attempt to play all sides against the middle, and for what? he's a Democrat when it serves him, he's a Republican when it serves him, he's Independant when the other two sides get wise to his game.

IIRC, the blues _finally_ showed him the door in the primaries. He switched parties because he needed the red votes and managed to pull it off.
While the effectiveness of the political stunt was impressive, it was one of the bigger disappointments to me. 'my side' occasionally pulls off political stunts and I'm often happy about it so I cannot complain much.
