Please make an updated version with the new spikes that can out like the on spike and dragonfly 2
Not surprised the asics spikes were the most expensive, they’ve absolutely lost their minds when it comes to pricing their products lately! Great vid Ben!
Agree they are very expensive for what they are! Not sure why they’ve gone for such a high price tag 🏷️
When you factor in the durability of Asics shoes, the pricepoint make more sense. They are still expensive, but at least your shoes last. I have a Metaspeed sky+ with 1100kms under its belt, and it still can probably go for 500kms more. My Vaporfly 2 has been retired after 150kms lol
@@JM-nu2jg might be the case but sorry mate I’m not paying £175 for the nimbus, £165 for the cumulus or £210 for the Superblast 🙈
@@ThatRunnerAaron ahhhhhh
I live in the asia pacific, and if we convert the prices, it's not as expensive here compared to there (for instance, the superblast when converted is around £190). Maybe it's because of import taxes
Depending on where you live, there are some very good clearance sales going on. I got a pair in the US for $99 off of running warehouse. I use them as a training session spike
MD-X a bit of an outlier in this one given the rest are probably more 3-10k options compared to the MD-X being an 800-1500 option. Cloudspike is coming out in a couple months I believe so hopefully that'll be the next one to test out.
Also, I highly recommend testing the Saucony Terminal VT when it releases in your area. It's out in Australia and seems to be a Dragonfly competitor with very similar specs but only four spikes.
That would probably explain why it felt so different. Good to try something new. Ill keep an eye out for it :)
Great balanced reviews there Ben, thanks! I'm not into my track running, very much a road man, but always nice to get a good idea of the shoes and brands on the market!
nice rundown & comparison.
I've done 1500 in Avanti but moved to Ambition for 800/1500 and will use the former for 3-10k
Thank you Jani :)
I'm stunned at how expensive all these track spikes are! I ran track competitively only about 5 years ago and the difference in prices between these shoes and the ones back then is insane!! I'm guessing it's the new technology bringing the prices up but it's a shame for what should be an accessible sport. Anyway, great video Ben, this was a fun watch!
These are extremely high end spikes, entry-level ones such as Nike Rivals will cost around $65, and work like older spikes do without all of the new technology
Hi Ben. It would be great to hear your impressions of the new Saucony Sinister, even thought it's not a spike per se. P.S. I "met" you when you showed up impromptu at Seth's Boston group run in April and have been enjoying your videos since then!
I’ve not heard of that one. I’ll take a look. Thanks for following along Geoff
I am using the New Balance for the 1500 in the decathlon and also wore them for open 800 last year. And I also raced 100 and 400 in them last summer when my sprint spikes were broken.
They are really great for fast running, but I only use them in races because I am scared of wearing down the spikes and being unable to change them 😅
Yeah i reckon they're a great fit for the shorter races. Going to try them for my next race- if i can get them on aha!
Since the spikes are made out of titanium they won't wear down, I did all my track workouts in them, and raced in them all season and they aren't even close to being worn down, it would probably take over 200 miles to wear them down
I really enjoy this video, very satisfying. I love track shoes.
Thank you Omar
I have tried all of these except for the Hoka. Of the ones you tested that I have worn, I would rank them in the order of Dragonfly, metaspeed LD, MD-X, and Avanti TYO. An excellent shoe that you didn't test which I firmly believe is the best spike on the market is the NB Fuelcell LD-X. It ties together the things you liked about the MD-X with the high-cushion and forgiving feel of the 10k spikes. I am yet to race a 10,000 in the LD-X, but I have set personal bests in it from 800m (not my best event), to 5000m. I would highly recommend people consider the LD-X because it simply outperforms everything else.
Also, you mentioned concern about not being able to wear the NB spikes after the spikes wear out, which is true because of their built-in design. However, I have gone an entire indoor and outdoor season wearing the LD-X and the spikes are still holding shape. It is worth noting that they are composed of titanium and it will take a lot more than running on a rubber track to wear them out. When I was at the Armory for a 5000m race, I went down a floor while wearing the spikes and had to walk on concrete to get to the restroom. After putting pressure onto the concrete with the spikes, it was actually the concrete that broke rather than the spikes. In short, you do not have to worry about spike durability being an issue with the built-in titanium spikes.
thanks for your advice ben. I i'm considering to buy a pair of ld-x'es. do you think the fit is true to size or would you go half a size to a size up? this is my first time trying spikes and the NB ld-x'es are in sale now.
also, do you know how the fit in de forefoot is? i have a bit of a wider foot so if it is too narrow i have to go with some other shoe.
Ben for President!
Of canvey island athletics track
@@BenIsRunning you've got my vote
I have been racing in the Saucony Endorphin Cheetah and I absolutely love them
I've not tried those. Maybe i should make a part 2
"Knobbly bits"! love it. 😀
Ben "I know a lot of people haven't been gifted 5 pairs of shoes to try out". Bit of an understatement 😛
I’m certainly aware of how privileged I am. Hope this video can help others when picking there spikes so they don’t have to end up buy multiple pairs and then not be right for them :)
4:15 km/h warm up? that's my speed pace :P
Adidas has been amazing. 2:23 old man past marathoner. 51 year's old
Plenty of cushioning 🙌🏻
Just here to say that the only thing I like more than your content is that Mac Miller tattoo! Most dope!
Most dope indeed bro! Thanks for watching. RIP MAC
Would be really interested to see you test out the On spikes. Those seem like they’ve been absolute fire from their guys.
Hopefully get hold of a pair soon :)
Cool video, makes me reflect if my spikes are a bit too light for themselves. Coming in at a light 79g only!
They are called the Saucony endorphin spike LD, might wanna check em out idk.
I guess it depends on your distance. Some of the sprint spikes weigh nothing 😂
@@BenIsRunning actually sprint spikes tend to weigh a bit more because stiffness is more important than weight for sprints
@@benjaminkuch2558 "SOME" 👈
Weird that you didn’t try the new balance LD-X! Really want to know what that spike is like! Great video Ben! I also have the ASICS Metaspeed LD and think it’s top tier
I’m guessing it may be a little difficult to get hold of. The MD-x felt great so I’d love to try it
Finally a new video! What about a fix upload plan? Twice a week?
aha! Not for me but ill keep them coming don't you worry :)
Great training session and review Ben!
Thank you Tanw
Hey Ben, have you ever done a bleep test? Be interesting to see your score as you are mega quick and great at running?
Not since i was about 15 years old! Could be a fun one :)
Interesting video Ben. I got a pair of Nike Dragonfly spikes for my birthday last year but have not tried them as was out injured for quite a while soon after. Really must give them a go but a bit reluctant as have trouble with my Achilles on and off the past few years and bit concerned wearing spikes will be a bit of a risk.
My advice would be to build up using them. For example a few strides at the end of the workout to start with, then maybe the last few reps of a session. This was you can slowly get used to them without doing yourself too much harm compared to racing a 10k in them straight out the box :)
@@BenIsRunning, thanks Ben. Will take tem along to the next track session at my club and initially try a few strides.
Exactly the video I was looking for Ben
Great to hear it :)
@@BenIsRunning I went for the Adidas, just a little bit more comfortable and made up with them, a bit Takumi sen with spikes!
16:33 must’ve learnt this transition from the Tarantino masterclass on videography?
Good vid Ben! How far behind would you say a cheaper option like the Nike zoom rival distance spike is?
A fair bit to be honest but mostly in comfort over out and out performance :)
Makes me wanna try spikes somuch
They are pretty fun on the track! Makes you feel Usain Bolt 😂
@Ben Is Running I'd probably feel like peppa pig instead but still wanna try them
@@fabsterun shut up 😂 that was too good a comment not to laugh
When you get around to XC season, you should try the new Nike Dragonfly XC, they look like maybe a little more cushion but way better grip for XC type terrain
If they bring out my size 🤞🏻
The best spike isn't actually even here, but it is coming soON 🌚
soON- like what you did there! Hopefully I can snag a pair :)
Hey Ben, great video! In the US track & field season is basically over, so I’m curious what from this list would carry over for cross country.
Ah right, we’re just getting started. I’d say my pick for xc would be the adidas simply because it’s got a good amount of protection and grip at the rear
@@BenIsRunning Or maybe the cross country version of the dragonfly?
@@DevourerRichI got those and they are great
@@iambradchadyt6553 Do they have a wider toe box than the track version? I don’t like spikes but with cross country I kinda need one for the hilly courses.
@@DevourerRichthey do have a wider toe box
That was the New Balance MD-X v2 not v1
where and when is your race next week? might come down and watch
It’s in sale, Manchester :) think the details are online if you Google National athletics league
Thank you 🙏
Hi Ben, how do you feel about Metaspeed LD’s sizing compares to Metaspeed Sky+? Should i increase half size up in LD compares to Sky+?
I´m basically a 10k / HM runner, now training for a FM. Next week I would like to do a 5k time trial on a track. Honestly, I never considered using spikes before. Would you recommend using them for that 5k time trial?
Id personally recommend sticking with your road shoes if I'm honest. If you are looking to race a track 5k then id recommend thinking about spikes but if its not a race race then I'd stick with the carbons :)
@@BenIsRunning Thanks mate. Really appreciated. Keep the good work going!
What’s the best 5k one?
thanks for your video
can you recommend to me 2-5km track running shoes?
i considering dragon fly
Very interesting video Ben! I have had the dragonfly's for track, but remain a little unsure on whether I should use them for XC.
Which of those five spikes would you say is best for XC?
I personally would pick the avanti as it’s got the most grip on the rear and a good amount of cushioning. I believe there a dragonfly xc version coming soon 🔜
@@BenIsRunning Will consider, thanks!
@@williamsmith1451The dragonfly XC has come out in the US at least.
@@nathansmith6076 Ya I saw that, but to be honest, I think Nike making the dragonfly XC is a waste of money. Nike instead could have spent more time on the dragonfly 2 which I believe comes out next year.
@@williamsmith1451 I just use my old dragonfly for xc.
It's been many years since I ran in spikes.
Never really was a fan.
Maybe because I have really wide forefoots and midsole was nonexisting.
This new generation of spikes is quite different when it comes to cushioning but still fairly narrow :)
Helo, what boots do You recommend for amateur for 3 k pb? For times like 10.30-11.30?
How would you rank the shoes in terms of wideness in the toe box?
Good question. To be honest all spikes I've tried tend to be more on the narrow side. Id say the Asics is the widest or the Adidas Avanti TYO. The Hoka and New Balance certainly wouldnt accomidate a wide foot.
@@BenIsRunning interesting, I've only tried the dragonfly and found that wider than most spikes.
I picked up my dragonflys for 48 pound
Hi Ben, I wonder if you or a friend could do a video (if not already done) on entry-level, park run kind of level shoes?
I'd be looking at women's ones, hence the bit about the friend, but maybe a combined video?
I don't think I need spikes as not a track person. Also, it's winter down her now in NZ, so ant tips for grip in mud?
I'd recommend Nike Pegasus 39's. The Peg 40 has just been released so the 39 is often on sale, it's a daily trainer and had some decent lugs in the bottom to help with grip.
Hey Kathryn. Good question. My favourite shoe for parkruns which have off road sections are the ASICS novablast 3 TR. they are a road/trail hybrid so grip well on a range of surfaces. Hope that helps
@Ben Is Running thanks Ben, funnily enough, my current pair of shoes are simple Aisics ones with gel. I didn't actually pick them, my family randomly got me them while out getting theirs!!
Luckily they fit pretty good! They have grip on the bottom. My only hesitation is that they do feel a bit slippery on wet footpaths. Nevertheless, I'm in the right ballpark seemingly with Aisics.
Will this asics metaspeed LD works well on hard ground? No slip risk?
Only sometimes his Essex twang comes out
😂😂 please elaborate
Which one is best for 800m
did you have the chance to try the new on spikes out? I don't know which one to get when they come out
I haven’t yet but hopefully soon :)
Ben who does your music in your videos or where do you get your music from?
Very nice look
I live on Canvey, how did you find the track? Last time I was there it was in such disrepair, it was off putting lol
You should have seen the one in Kenya 😂
Hello, very interesting all your videos. Could you help me get a nike spikes shoes? I just need a victory air zoom v2 for my daughter. I live in Peru and can not get it here
Windy day out there
It’s always windy down on the canvey island track 😂

Hey Ben you should come to Normanby hall parkrun tomorrow
I'm currently in stockholm so going to give that one a go :)
@@BenIsRunning when so ik when to meet you
Should i buy the nike ones off the website he sent is it valid ?
Wow spikes have come along way. I remember in 1981, my High school coach wanted me to get Onitsuka Tiger Spartan B spikes like my team mates but they didn't make them small enough.( They told me to try again when my feet had stopped growing- I was 17 almost 18 then😂) So,I ended up getting a pair of bright orange Nike spikes.
aha awesome! Thats a great story. Hope the orange Nikes treated you well :)
Would you race a 1500m in the Asics though @ben?
I probably wouldn’t no, not aggressive enough :)
abit random but which shoe do you prefer between the hoka rocket x 2 and the asics metaspeed sky plus 😀💙
Oh that’s a tough one. I’d probably pick the ASICS personally but only very marginally
@@BenIsRunning ok thanks 😊
What size shoes do you wear on road running compared to spikes?
The same but all spikes are a little snug so you might want to go half a size up :)
starting to get that yt money
🤑😋
Shop via that link ;)
I am very new to spikes! I never ran a track race! The vaporflies feel great on road! But can I use them on track? or is the track faster with spikes? But I "think" track has that "bearfoot" feel? I dont Know But I am looking forward to 5,000m on track! (After I try alphaflys!)
So for track racing your not allowed to wear road shoes like the vaporfly because they exceed the legal limit set by the world athletics however some smaller, less competitive races will let you wear them it just depends on the rules so best to look into the race a little :)
@@BenIsRunning 🙏 thank you :). (congratulations on your boston marathon! )
@@marathonranati welcome! Thank you .)

First time seeing Ben in the Pegasus. I have heard that the On spikes are very fast, can you test them if you get them?
Believe it or not, this was my first run in a pegasus ever!! I’m looking forward to trying them out soon :)
Hey Ben can I still able to use the adidas spikes for the mile?
Sure
So I want the Nike dragon fly do I press the link that u put so I can order them?
It’s an affiliate link so if you chose to order through those links I get a little kick back :)
@@BenIsRunning ok tysm 😁
i love you ben... how tall are you?
Thanks 😂 I’m 5ft10
Do you think I could use the adidas avanti for cross county?
Yeh just have to just have to change the spikes to xc ones
What are roughly the 'guidelines' for using spikes on trackraces above regular (carbonplated) shoes? For instance, any specific distance, minimum speed?
People use spikes up to the 10K, which is the longest race in track. The spikes in this video are designed for professional athletes so they are meant to go fast and are very expensive. There are beginner track spikes that are cheaper and less aggressive if your just getting into track.
There are also limits on stack heights. For lots of races you won’t be able to use road shoes on the track that exceed the legal limit of 20mm of midsole
@@BenIsRunning why is this limit exist? Have high stack shoes advantages over spikes?
Thank you bro
This was very useful
May God bless you and know that Jesus loves you
This could have ben a god workout if you had dropped the rest between the 1000 and 400 o 30 seconds. Gets you used to accelerating when very tired. Always possible to run a faster 400 if you have a couple of minutes rest.
Also, could you not have prepared all the spikes in advance so all you had to do was change shoes?
The purpose of this workout was purely to try the spike about at different paces to be able to share that experience with the viewer :) good advice though

Yes I did say that in the video. More about sharing which spikes are suited best for certain runners/races :)
