+Chaingun1701 - he got his video featured and his name out there to be recognised. The gameplay stands on its own without Jingles having to fluff his windsock for him. I, personally, would be happy with that as a video contributor.

    • @Tanuki_kun
      @Tanuki_kun 7 лет назад +2

That's actually a replay bug, I had no hydro left :(
There is one use of the hydro that didn't get registered by the replay, no idea why...
You'll notice how far I spot the torps after I killed the Cleve and went CV hunting, that's when I had hydro on.

Thank you very much, good sir, I was impressed as well by the fact that suddenly I had no more teammates in the epicenter and you raked your own Kraken. That last torp launch made me have a brown pants alert, would've been embarrasing to screw up there, hahaha

HMAS Perth was sunk in the battle of Sunda Straight with the USS Houston. After realising that their escape through Sunda Straight had been cut off and now in the middle of a japanese invasion fleet, both captains made the decision to sell their ships at the highest cost and buy the Allies time and attacked at once.
Brave men all to the end and went down fighting. Lest We Forget

Jingles, Thank you for deciding to examine the history of this ship in depth! My great-grandfather was (then) Commodore Henry Harwood who (as I'm sure you know) commanded the squadron in the Battle of River Plate from the HMS Ajax. As such it was fantastic to hear additional history of the ships from which he commanded.
I also appreciate the return to a history perspective! Really miss those original videos you used to do with the photos and history before watching gameplay. Must be a lot of work I'm sure, but any history is always welcome. :) Cheers!

Hi Jingles, I hope you see this but in New Zealand we have two Sea Cadet Corps units named after Leander class ships. These are T.S Achilles and T.S Leander ! HMS Neptune was also predominantly crewed by 150 New Zealand sailor's and remains our largest loss of life at sea during a naval conflict !! The Y turret from HMNZS Achilles also stands guard outside our main naval base, HMNZS Philomel.

My Grandfather spoke often of his time on the HMNZS Ahchilles and even the time he got a "ride" to Singapore on the HMS Prince of Wales before it sank.
One thing he did mention was the HMS Neptune. It was in the process of being crewed and transferred to the New Zealand Navy when it was diverted and sunk. My Grandfather told me he was supposed to be assigned to her. The New Zealand Navy today still considers what happened to the HMNZS Neptune as our greatest Naval disaster.

Jingles, you hardly gave mention to our other two Modified Leanders, HMA Ships Perth and Hobart! Perth did see action in the Med, along with Hobart.
HMAS Hobart had a very active war, she fought the Italians in 1940 around Aden and British Somaliland, as well off Berbera, where she conducted everything from demolition parties, provided an ant-tank gun crew ashore to the Army, bombardment, fend off air attacks, and evacuate troops. After this very active period she returned to Australia as the flagship of the Australian Station, before being refitted and dispatched to the Med to relieve HMAS Perth. On the way Hobart rendered aid to a stricken troop ship that was bombed and caught fire. In the Med she sortied with HM Ships Queen Elizabeth, Barham and Valiant.
In 1942 she was sent to the Pacific to fight the Japanese, where she went through the battle of the Coral Sea, and was present at the battles of Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomons, where she covered the landings. On the 20th of July in 1943 she was hit aft by a Japanese Long Lance torpedo, striking her on the Portside in the area of the Wardroom, killing 13 Officers and ratings, and injuring 7 more. Hobart returned to service in December 1944 and joined the British Pacific Fleet at Manus in February 1945, where she covered the Allied landings at Cebu in the Philippines in March 1945. In April she covered the landings at Tarakan in Borneo and then in May covered the landings at Wewak in Papua New Guinea.
From 7 to 9 June 1945 she was operating off Brunei, Borneo in support of the landings there, and then in July she did the same for Balikpapan. Hobart was one of the few Australian ships present in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Japanese surrender. In the two years following the end of hostilities, Hobart remained in service as a unit of the Australian Squadron. Three periods were spent in Japanese waters in support of the occupation forces; November 1945 to March 1946; September to November 1946; and April to July 1947. Hobart was paid off into Reserve in August 1947, paid off in December 1947, underwent refit as a training ship from 1953 to 1956, but never put back to sea, and was finally sold as scrap in February 1962 and broken up in ironically Osaka Japan in April 1962.
HMAS Perth upon transfer to the Royal Australian Navy was on transit to Sydney at the outbreak of war, and proceeded to the West Indies area, to protect oil tankers in the area. She operated for the next two and a half months in the West Indies and Western Atlantic before proceeding to Sydney. There she undertook a refit, escorted the Troopship Queen Mary, and spent six months as the Flagship of the Australia Station. November 1940 Perth departed for the Middle East, and operated around Aden until being sent to the Med in Decimeter of 1940 where she joined the Royal Navy 7th Cruiser Squadron.
January 1941 saw Perth transport soldiers to Crete, and patrols around Crete and Malta. March 1941 saw Perth ferrying reinforcement troops to Greece, and then taking part in the Battle of Matapan. April 1941 saw Perth evacuating troops from Crete. During the return from Crete with 1188 passengers aboard Perth, the convoy was attacked five times and on 30 May the ship was hit by a bomb in a boiler room. Two cooks, two sailors and nine passengers were killed and the boiler room was put out of action. The ship was later badly shaken by several very near misses. Alexandria was reached on 31 May and Perth remained there until 25 June undergoing repairs, which goes to show how the new engine room and boiler layout worked in these ships!
June saw Perth in action against the Vichy French off Syria, before being relieved by HMAS Hobart. Perth arrived in Sydney in August 1941, underwent refit, and sailed for the Pacific in December 1941. On the night of 28th February 1942 Perth was spotted along with the USS Houston by a Japanese cruiser force consisting of the cruisers Natori and Yura and destroyers Harukaze, Hatakaze, Asakaze, Fubuki, Murakumo, Shirayuki and Shirakumo. Close cover to seaward was provided by the 2nd Division of the Japanese 7th Cruiser Squadron (Admiral Kurita) consisting of heavy cruisers Mogami and Mikuma screened by the destroyer Shikinami. Distant cover was provided by the 1st Division of the 7th Squadron, Suzuya and Kumano, several destroyers and aircraft carrier Ryujo. In the Battle of the Sunda Straight Perth was struck by four torpedoes and numerous shells, and had expended all of her 6in ammunition down to few starburst rounds and practice shells. She and the Houston were both sunk.
At the time of her loss Perth's ship's company totalled 681, comprising 671 naval personnel, six RAAF personnel (for operating and servicing the aircraft) and four civilians (canteen staff) Three hundred and fifty naval personnel (including Captain Waller) and three civilians did not survive the sinking. Those who did numbered 328 (324 naval, three RAAF and one civilian). Four naval personnel died ashore without having been taken prisoner. A further 106 men died in captivity (105 naval, one RAAF). Four sailors were recovered from captivity in September 1944 when they were among prisoners of war rescued after the sinking of a Japanese transport. After the end of hostilities 214 men (211 naval, two RAAF and one civilian) were repatriated to Australia.
Today the wreck of the Perth is being robbed by illegal salvage operators, who are ripping her apart on the seabed to sell the metal of her armour plate and other items as scrap. The wreck has been extensively damaged, and lies in Indonesian waters, which has seen our government push the Indonesian government to protect the wreck from further scavenging.
Just a little history on the two of our Leanders you mentioned Jingles, and then there was the Sydney, but maybe you could save that for an historical video about the Perth!

I once had a philosophy teacher, really old and wise man, incredibly analytic thinker. Even his colleagues were in awe because of this. Unfortunately his teaching style was not really interesting for most students. In our class of 20 people only 2 paid attention to what he was saying and i was one of those. The other really good thing about him was that he could remain eye contact for hours so it felt like he was basically only teaching myself since we stared at each other and i soaked up his wisdom like a sponge. You are kinda similar to that when you ramble on about history Jingles. Incredibly ancient :3 and full of historical knowledge. Keep up those videos, they will appeal to a lot of people.
And by the way you laugh about a greek romance but what about you and Rita? "I knew this girl from portugal, she needed a place to stay so i offered her one, then we started to fuuuudge but it didn't work out" Incredibly romantic as well, are you? xD

Jingles didn't mention it, but the HMS Cumberland also played herself in the film. The Cumberland came in after the battle after breaking off from repair work in the Falklands. She did not fight the Graf Spee as Langsdorff had her scuttled. In 1956 the Cumberland was without her main turrets as she was a testing ship, but that was a nice nod by the RN to allow her to be included.

Thanks so much for the history lessons both in WoT and WoWS. You'd make a great History lecturer. It really adds a lot. Would you list the movies or books in the text when you mention them in the video. It would make it a lot easier to look up. Keep up the great work!

The story of HMAS Sydney is compelling. There were survivors from the Kormoran but all they could say was the last they saw of the Sydney was it steaming away after the engagement. No one knew its final resting place until it was discovered in 2008. There was an excellent documentary by ABC which a friend of mine sent me on CD. I shall have to find it again. The largest loss of Australian service men in one action. No grave but the sea.
The main guns of the Kormoran were guns removed from one of the German ships severely damaged at the battle of Jutland.
