I had a similar experience when I went into the Boston Public Library. The scale and beauty of the design struck me as inspiring, educational, and oddly human and intimate.

How should we dive deep to this subject and make buildings that are more responsive to the environment?

You have to study the community, understanding the history how it came to be, demographics, normalities, etc. Urban design and architecture go hand in hand with these teachings and you will have a better way of shaping the building.
