Someone I was close with passed away three weeks ago and I've been having a really hard time with the grief. It's beautiful this is the episode I'm picking back up on because he loved trees. Everytime someone passed away, he'd plant a new tree. He'd plant trees all over town in random spots and create cuttings to give to people for free. He always wanted to remind people that trees were free. I miss him so much but this is the perfect topic for me to feel close to him and remember his soul. Thank you ❤️🎃

Hello to my favorite podcast people! I’ve been wanting to write in to see how Nate pronounces my name. And I thought this was my chance. Aaron asked: “have you ever had a moment where your parents said: ‘we need to experience this as a family?’” My dad woke all 5 of us kids early in the morning so that we could watch our little brother be born. My dad stood there next to my mom like this was the proudest moment of his life. It was memorable! Something all of us will never forget. I was 7 years old. I once showed up to an interview for a truck driving job. I got the Class B license and had rented a U-Haul once or twice, so I thought I had this in the bag… but it never crossed my mind I’d have to drive a stick shift. I aced the office interview and then the guy took me out to the truck for the driving portion. It was a stick shift. My heart sunk. I told the interviewer I couldn’t drive a stick and he looked so desperate for drivers, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “Let’s just see how you do.” The next 20 minutes were like flying in the most turbulence you’ve ever experienced… Just stalling on busy roads and having the interviewer switch places with me to get us back to the garage. So embarrassing. He hired me on the spot.
That cut to Nate’s face while Dusty was talking about it was hilarious 😂 His arms were folded and he looked like he was glaring. Nate looked like he was gonna curse Dusty out 😂

When Aaron talks about having troubles with his banking, I started cracking up picturing him at an old table with a stack of bills, and he’s got the clear green plastic visor, with a bare light bulb hanging on a cord from the ceiling, and one of those old adding machines with the big mechanical lever.
I had the EXACT same 4-door Saturn stick-shift with no power steering as Dusty had! It was a high school graduation gift from my dad. I didn’t know how to drive it, but learned quickly so I could upgrade from my 1981 Plymouth Champ. I also got my first cell phone at the same time and it turns out you CAN drive a stick-shift, talk on the phone, rotate a stiff steering wheel and crank down manual windows all at the same time if you want it bad enough! It was 1999, so my phone only had the ability to make phone calls, which was fortunate, because I’m quite sure teenage me definitely would have tried to text, check social media and online shop while I was driving as well… 😬 Keep up the great work Nate, Aaron, Banana Hammock & Dusty!
Hello folks! Excellent episode! I remembered when I had no background tending to a lawn till I bought my first home. Never seen it done. Honest to god, I thought I could “mow” through my 1/4 acre yard with gardening scissors. Pretty soon realized how dumb I looked when my neighbors thought I was doing some exotic Asian ritual. Appreciate you all. Anytime I feel stressed I come listen to your old episodes. Just today I rewatched the SNL monologue for the 100th time it feels like where I learned about Nate’s comedy styling. when i was learning to drive stick shift my brother (4 years older) took me to a parking lot - and boy was it a yell fest - the thing i remember the most is that he took me to McDonald's afterwards to get me ice cream to smooth things over before we got home to our parents! My first car was a Hot Pink 1979 VW Bug - and I LOVED IT!!!!

Hey Aaron, I related to your story about how your dad gathered the family to watch Bush announce the war. My dad gathered our family to watch President Nixon resign, and when we complained about being forced to watch a boring news conference, he told us this was a moment in history that we needed to witness. Looking back on that, I think it’s pretty cool to have shared a moment in history with my family. And, thanks to all of you for a wonderful podcast. I look forward to watching every week!

When my kids were younger, we visited Milwaukee and found the bronze Fonzie from Happy Days statue. Because my husband and I were huge fans of the show, we posed our kids in front of the statue and had them do the Fonzie thumbs-up. I shared the picture on Twitter and tagged Henry Winkler. He responded with the most Fonzie comment ever- “How cool are they!?!” It made my day.
I tried to teach my daughter how to drive a stick shift so I started out saying to her the first thing you need to do is let out the clutch slowly. So she slowly opened the drivers door!!!!
I grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada. ..That's the prairies where a lot of the farming takes place. We didn't change time there, and the reason I was told was because of the farmers. They didn't want to because it messed with their schedules and the animals' schedules... for feeding and milking etc. Dusty is right, that a farmer's day is dictated more by reality, not by the clock. P.S. It's almost exactly as it's spelled - SAS-KA-chew-in. Also! Sunset at the winter solstice where I am now (Edmonton) is at 4:16pm, with sunrise at 8:48am.

Nate is right cars with manual transmissions are less likely to be stolen for sure. I know this because I have a car that I hate, it is a stick shift and I have made no effort to keep it from getting stolen and nobody has even attempted to take it yet. 😂

I would happily teach Aaron to drive a stick shift! I'm getting ready to turn 62 and I'm very patient. You can't find standard transmission cars anymore and they are the best. I drove one for so many years that you don't even think about all of the shifting you do in traffic. And if you live in the midwest it comes in real handy in the Winter. Thanks for the laughs and memories guys!
We bought our 16 yr old son a 20 yr old Jeep. It’s a stick shift- he’d never driven one before. When learning, he stalled out at a traffic light where several utility workers were working. They died laughing. He was so embarrassed. I told him recently-it’s not nearly as entertaining riding with you since you don’t stall out anymore.
My father of course had me drive up the steepest city street downtown. I couldn’t figure out how to notify the car behind me that they were way too close to me. Freaked me out.
At the end of the episode, Aaron imitated a pilot making an in-flight announcement to passengers. It was pretty impressive as far as an impression of that voice goes. I would like to hear all the guys give their best pilot announcement voice.
HUGE agree to the driving teacher comment. Best advice is from EverydayDriver, who say the LAST person who should be teaching someone to drive (standard or auto) is their parent/spouse or the owner of the car. I learned stick in one friend's car and was instructed by another friend. Owner didn't freak out about his clutch (which is a wear item and designed to deal with a bit of this anyway), instructor stayed calm and focused on teaching, and I had a calm learning environment. None of us are mad and I'm rowing gears today. Compared to when my parents taught me to drive at 16, mom freaked out and couldn't even make it out of the driveway in the passenger seat. Also: Someone interested in going to all the trouble to steal a car, especially a modern one with immobilizers and such, they probably also know how to drive a stick.
Dusty, you gotta buy a multi-spout watering timer, as well as some perculated hoses. Some even come with a meter that will delay watering if it detects it's already moist enough (such as after a rain). A good quality one is worth the money for time and effort it will save you!
My first car was a Honda CRX manual. (Im a little older than you guys) It was a trip learning from my mom who hadn’t driven one in decades at that point. The lurching and screaming going on is unforgettable. 😂😂😂 Now, I find myself in a basic Nissan and as I care for her in her old age I find great pleasure in DoorDashing in that little 5speed. It has 6 cup holders! And no, I don’t worry about anyone stealing it! 🚙😂
Dusty. Invest in some soaker hoses and an automatic timer. I'm probably not as busy as you but i do work a lot and it's a great way to keep my vegetables happy.

Love Dusty’s view on nature, creatures can live harmoniously side by side. I had a bear come in and sleep by me in a cabin in northern Minnesota and for a brief few hours it was harmonious. Until my alarm went off and realized there’s a bear in the cabin. Harmony flew out the window as well as myself knowing I now had to fight a bear before breakfast
It was 2003, I was in high school and I had saved some money to buy my own car. I found a ‘94 Ford Mustang and was very excited to buy it. My brother took me out to see it in his little Ford Ranger, and seeing I was disappointed to see it was a stick shift, on our way home he pulled over, put me in the driver’s seat and said, “we aren’t getting home until you learn how to drive a stick.” I learned that day, bought that Mustang, and absolutely destroyed its transmission for years to come.

I was listening to a the plant podcast on my way home from work and was hearing Brian, talk about his bonsai tree and y’all saying how bad it was doing…..I got home and finished watching it on RUclips…..I laughed so hard upon seeing the tree…that’s the saddest plant I’ve ever saw. It looks like someone said here, have this tree. Take care of it and it will grow. Like your new marriage. Then Brian just put it in the closet next to the shoes and the only time he ever touched it again was for the podcast….also listening to Dusty talk about his trees and whatnot, I can totally see Nate being there one day and saying “Boy there’s A LOT going on here “
If you can find a used manual transmission car, they will be cheaper. We bought our daughter a Toyota Yaris when she was 16 and taught her how to drive it. It was in great condition and so much cheaper than all the other cars we had purple eyes on. When she upgraded to another car on her own, she bought another used stick shift because nobody was test driving it and got a good deal on it. My husband also drives a stick shift, VW Jetta.
My car is a stick shift. I actually searched for a stick shift when looking for a car to buy recently. I prefer it. I pulled up to a valet once and they couldn't drive my car. It was a bunch of young guys and none of them knew how to drive it. A stick shift is so much more fun to drive. You're so much more in control of the car.
My last four cars were stick shifts. Sad they are becoming less and less common, especially on sports cars. I absolutely despise the way an automatic transmission shifts at the wrong time/when I don’t want it to. I want control.

I love that Professor Weber thinks he could drive a stick shift vehicle from watching a quick youtube video. It would be super fun to see Nate, Dusty, and Billfold take turns trying to give Aaron a driving lesson in traffic. Nate and Dusty would do just fine, but I don't think Bonsai Bates could handle the pressure.
My mom LOVED Alabama and would follow them around if going to nearby states. They went to one of their grandparents house in the late 80s and he invited her and a friend in the porch and they talked in their rocking chairs.
I can't tell if Nate was starting to fall asleep while Dusty was talking about planting trees or if that's just the way he looks. LOL But I sympathize with Nate, I too have big eyes that have a lazy, maybe tired look to them. Nate is right! The hard landing is on purpose. Air plane brakes engage automatically and if it is slippery the touch down hard to male sure the brakes kick on.
Hey Bear! About the spitting apple seeds, my daughters spit watermelon seeds into the garden last summer and we had a surprise watermelon spring up and was very shocking to us all! So it does work with some things. The food forest also sounds great but I’m a firm believe that animal’s would take it over without regulations. I have palm trees that produce dates and palm rats are a serious problem.
I've been listening to you guys for a long time and I love every episode because of how random things get, but one of my favorite recurring happenings is when the convo is moving along at a good pace and everything seems to be on track, and then Dusty busts in with a conspiracy theory or scepticism about the agenda of eclipses on election years and we gotta start all over 🤣 love you guys, keep up the good work, you bring a lot of people pure, guiltless, effortless joy.
My husband worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Washington DC and had never driven a stick. His boss said, “come on.” By the time my husband got home from his work, he couldn’t stop laughing because it was brutal. His boss had to have a sore neck the next day🥴. It was that bad😂. Diann. The first time I drove stick was on the way to the DMV after buying my second car. Since then I have driven a stick shift daily for the past 9+ years. In college I taught as many of my friends as would give me the time. I got so good at teaching them, I have a running claim that I can teach anyone how to drive stick within 30 min. to an hour. If the Nateland Team can't show Aaron the way; just book my wife and I a room in town, give us some tickets to your shows, and a little merch might be nice. I can have Aaron rowing through the gears in no time.
I drove a stick when I was younger (the 90’s) but I have core memories of my friend Danielle and her huge diesel stick shift and driving backroads drinking beer (she was driving and wouldn’t drink until we got somewhere safe of course)heading out to small country towns to meet up with friends….90’s country blaring. Once an older car is up to normal driving speed the lack of power steering isn’t really noticeable. At slower speeds (parking lots, etc.) it takes a little getting used to. I drove a ‘69 Nova through high school and college from ‘88-‘94. When I got my first “newer” car it felt like I was piloting the Starship Enterprise in comparison.
We definitely took a moment as a whole family to commemorate and take a photo next to a bench in Savannah, Georgia. It said that James Oglethorpe was the founder of the colon. It’s an old bench and the y was missing. We had a good laugh all day referring to that bench and how he must have found the colon.
Hi guys! Hey Bear! Love this podcast I never thought I had two hours to stop and listen to something but here I am! I have had the privilege of planting thousands of acres of trees, Almonds and Pistachios. Almonds take 3 years to produce a harvest and pistachios take 5 to 6 years. Almonds require at least two varieties to pollinate and need loads of bees! (there are self pollinating varieties now) and pistachios take a male and female variety to pollinate. Also, I think we could defeat the Ants, if they think like us there would need to be elections and committees and rules. All we would need to do is ask Krispy Kreme to give away free donuts and Ants would die fighting each other in line. Keep up the fun!

When Aaron talks about having troubles with his banking, I started cracking up picturing him at an old table with a stack of bills, and he’s got the clear green plastic visor, with a bare light bulb hanging on a cord from the ceiling, and one of those old adding machines with the big mechanical lever.
I had the EXACT same 4-door Saturn stick-shift with no power steering as Dusty had! It was a high school graduation gift from my dad. I didn’t know how to drive it, but learned quickly so I could upgrade from my 1981 Plymouth Champ. I also got my first cell phone at the same time and it turns out you CAN drive a stick-shift, talk on the phone, rotate a stiff steering wheel and crank down manual windows all at the same time if you want it bad enough! It was 1999, so my phone only had the ability to make phone calls, which was fortunate, because I’m quite sure teenage me definitely would have tried to text, check social media and online shop while I was driving as well… 😬

Hello folks! Excellent episode! I remembered when I had no background tending to a lawn till I bought my first home. Never seen it done. Honest to god, I thought I could “mow” through my 1/4 acre yard with gardening scissors. Pretty soon realized how dumb I looked when my neighbors thought I was doing some exotic Asian ritual.

when i was learning to drive stick shift my brother (4 years older) took me to a parking lot - and boy was it a yell fest - the thing i remember the most is that he took me to McDonald's afterwards to get me ice cream to smooth things over before we got home to our parents! My first car was a Hot Pink 1979 VW Bug - and I LOVED IT!!!!

Hey Aaron, I related to your story about how your dad gathered the family to watch Bush announce the war. My dad gathered our family to watch President Nixon resign, and when we complained about being forced to watch a boring news conference, he told us this was a moment in history that we needed to witness. Looking back on that, I think it’s pretty cool to have shared a moment in history with my family. And, thanks to all of you for a wonderful podcast. I look forward to watching every week!

When my kids were younger, we visited Milwaukee and found the bronze Fonzie from Happy Days statue. Because my husband and I were huge fans of the show, we posed our kids in front of the statue and had them do the Fonzie thumbs-up. I shared the picture on Twitter and tagged Henry Winkler. He responded with the most Fonzie comment ever- “How cool are they!?!” It made my day.

I tried to teach my daughter how to drive a stick shift so I started out saying to her the first thing you need to do is let out the clutch slowly. So she slowly opened the drivers door!!!!

I grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada. ..That's the prairies where a lot of the farming takes place. We didn't change time there, and the reason I was told was because of the farmers. They didn't want to because it messed with their schedules and the animals' schedules... for feeding and milking etc. Dusty is right, that a farmer's day is dictated more by reality, not by the clock.

I would happily teach Aaron to drive a stick shift! I'm getting ready to turn 62 and I'm very patient. You can't find standard transmission cars anymore and they are the best. I drove one for so many years that you don't even think about all of the shifting you do in traffic. And if you live in the midwest it comes in real handy in the Winter. Thanks for the laughs and memories guys!
We bought our 16 yr old son a 20 yr old Jeep. It’s a stick shift- he’d never driven one before. When learning, he stalled out at a traffic light where several utility workers were working. They died laughing. He was so embarrassed.
I told him recently-it’s not nearly as entertaining riding with you since you don’t stall out anymore.
My father of course had me drive up the steepest city street downtown. I couldn’t figure out how to notify the car behind me that they were way too close to me. Freaked me out.
At the end of the episode, Aaron imitated a pilot making an in-flight announcement to passengers. It was pretty impressive as far as an impression of that voice goes. I would like to hear all the guys give their best pilot announcement voice.

HUGE agree to the driving teacher comment. Best advice is from EverydayDriver, who say the LAST person who should be teaching someone to drive (standard or auto) is their parent/spouse or the owner of the car.
I learned stick in one friend's car and was instructed by another friend. Owner didn't freak out about his clutch (which is a wear item and designed to deal with a bit of this anyway), instructor stayed calm and focused on teaching, and I had a calm learning environment. None of us are mad and I'm rowing gears today. Compared to when my parents taught me to drive at 16, mom freaked out and couldn't even make it out of the driveway in the passenger seat.
Also: Someone interested in going to all the trouble to steal a car, especially a modern one with immobilizers and such, they probably also know how to drive a stick.

Dusty, you gotta buy a multi-spout watering timer, as well as some perculated hoses. Some even come with a meter that will delay watering if it detects it's already moist enough (such as after a rain). A good quality one is worth the money for time and effort it will save you!

My first car was a Honda CRX manual. (Im a little older than you guys) It was a trip learning from my mom who hadn’t driven one in decades at that point. The lurching and screaming going on is unforgettable. 😂😂😂 Now, I find myself in a basic Nissan and as I care for her in her old age I find great pleasure in DoorDashing in that little 5speed. It has 6 cup holders! And no, I don’t worry about anyone stealing it! 🚙😂

I'd love to know Dusty's thoughts on planting techniques like "no dig" or the push for getting rid of traditional grass-covered lawns and converting them into native species gardens or similar, natural options.
Love Dusty’s view on nature, creatures can live harmoniously side by side. I had a bear come in and sleep by me in a cabin in northern Minnesota and for a brief few hours it was harmonious. Until my alarm went off and realized there’s a bear in the cabin. Harmony flew out the window as well as myself knowing I now had to fight a bear before breakfast

It was 2003, I was in high school and I had saved some money to buy my own car. I found a ‘94 Ford Mustang and was very excited to buy it. My brother took me out to see it in his little Ford Ranger, and seeing I was disappointed to see it was a stick shift, on our way home he pulled over, put me in the driver’s seat and said, “we aren’t getting home until you learn how to drive a stick.” I learned that day, bought that Mustang, and absolutely destroyed its transmission for years to come.

I love the podcast! I was listening to a the plant podcast on my way home from work and was hearing Brian, talk about his bonsai tree and y’all saying how bad it was doing…..I got home and finished watching it on RUclips…..I laughed so hard upon seeing the tree…that’s the saddest plant I’ve ever saw. It looks like someone said here, have this tree. Take care of it and it will grow. Like your new marriage. Then Brian just put it in the closet next to the shoes and the only time he ever touched it again was for the podcast….also listening to Dusty talk about his trees and whatnot, I can totally see Nate being there one day and saying “Boy there’s A LOT going on here “

If you can find a used manual transmission car, they will be cheaper. We bought our daughter a Toyota Yaris when she was 16 and taught her how to drive it. It was in great condition and so much cheaper than all the other cars we had purple eyes on. When she upgraded to another car on her own, she bought another used stick shift because nobody was test driving it and got a good deal on it.
My husband also drives a stick shift, VW Jetta.
My car is a stick shift. I actually searched for a stick shift when looking for a car to buy recently. I prefer it. I pulled up to a valet once and they couldn't drive my car. It was a bunch of young guys and none of them knew how to drive it. A stick shift is so much more fun to drive. You're so much more in control of the car.
My last four cars were stick shifts. Sad they are becoming less and less common, especially on sports cars. I absolutely despise the way an automatic transmission shifts at the wrong time/when I don’t want it to. I want control.

I love that Professor Weber thinks he could drive a stick shift vehicle from watching a quick youtube video. It would be super fun to see Nate, Dusty, and Billfold take turns trying to give Aaron a driving lesson in traffic. Nate and Dusty would do just fine, but I don't think Bonsai Bates could handle the pressure.

My mom LOVED Alabama and would follow them around if going to nearby states. They went to one of their grandparents house in the late 80s and he invited her and a friend in the porch and they talked in their rocking chairs.
I can't tell if Nate was starting to fall asleep while Dusty was talking about planting trees or if that's just the way he looks. LOL But I sympathize with Nate, I too have big eyes that have a lazy, maybe tired look to them. I wonder if Nate had teachers in school who thought he wasn't paying attention as I did because of my "sleepy eyes". Great episode guys. You all are a joy to watch on the RUclips.
You guys inspired me to take science into my own hands. I took my bathroom scale outside, turned it upside down, and pushed it down real hard. Nate is right! The hard landing is on purpose. Air plane brakes engage automatically and if it is slippery the touch down hard to male sure the brakes kick on.
Hey Bear! About the spitting apple seeds, my daughters spit watermelon seeds into the garden last summer and we had a surprise watermelon spring up and was very shocking to us all! So it does work with some things. The food forest also sounds great but I’m a firm believe that animal’s would take it over without regulations. I have palm trees that produce dates and palm rats are a serious problem.

My husband worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Washington DC and had never driven a stick. His boss said, “come on.” By the time my husband got home from his work, he couldn’t stop laughing because it was brutal. His boss had to have a sore neck the next day🥴. It was that bad😂. Diann. Nate was mentioned this week on Pod Meets World!! (Podcast where 3 cast members from Boy Meets World are doing a re-watch). So casually Will Friedle, the actor who played Eric Matthews on Boy Meets World said, "Nate Bargatze's got that great joke where he's like 'my wife and I watch amazing race and she says that we should go on this and he's like, 'sure if you wanna get divorced.'" Nate is officially a household name and I love it.

The first time I drove stick was on the way to the DMV after buying my second car. Since then I have driven a stick shift daily for the past 9+ years. In college I taught as many of my friends as would give me the time. I got so good at teaching them, I have a running claim that I can teach anyone how to drive stick within 30 min. to an hour.
If the Nateland Team can't show Aaron the way; just book my wife and I a room in town, give us some tickets to your shows, and a little merch might be nice. I can have Aaron rowing through the gears in no time.
I drove a stick when I was younger (the 90’s) but I have core memories of my friend Danielle and her huge diesel stick shift and driving backroads drinking beer (she was driving and wouldn’t drink until we got somewhere safe of course)heading out to small country towns to meet up with friends….90’s country blaring. Once an older car is up to normal driving speed the lack of power steering isn’t really noticeable. At slower speeds (parking lots, etc.) it takes a little getting used to. I drove a ‘69 Nova through high school and college from ‘88-‘94. When I got my first “newer” car it felt like I was piloting the Starship Enterprise in comparison.

We definitely took a moment as a whole family to commemorate and take a photo next to a bench in Savannah, Georgia. It said that James Oglethorpe was the founder of the colon. It’s an old bench and the y was missing. We had a good laugh all day referring to that bench and how he must have found the colon.

Hi guys! Hey Bear! Love this podcast I never thought I had two hours to stop and listen to something but here I am! I have had the privilege of planting thousands of acres of trees, Almonds and Pistachios. Almonds take 3 years to produce a harvest and pistachios take 5 to 6 years. Almonds require at least two varieties to pollinate and need loads of bees! (there are self pollinating varieties now) and pistachios take a male and female variety to pollinate. Also, I think we could defeat the Ants, if they think like us there would need to be elections and committees and rules. All we would need to do is ask Krispy Kreme to give away free donuts and Ants would die fighting each other in line. Keep up the fun!
