I think my sister was swindled years ago by a store clerk. This was in PA just shortly after they started the lottery there. The grand prize was $88 million and she had 5 of the winning numbers, which should have been at least a million.
The clerk told her she only won $88 "because there were so many other people with 5 numbers".
Sad to say, my sister's not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree and believed him.
Some of these occurred BEFORE apps and freestanding machines were available in stores to check your ticket yourself. I take pictures of my winning ticket and I ALWAYS know how much my win is before I go to claim it. I lay in wait for a dishonest clerk to try to tell me I didn't win.
Here in Quebec, Canada, there's an app that's available for your phone that allows you to scan the QR code on your ticket to see if it's a winner or not. If it is, you take it to the Loto Quebec offices to verify it. You don't have to worry about crooked store employees looking to steal your ticket.
Many American states also have this so I don’t understand why ppl don’t use it

I once won a scratch ticket that read win win win or spin spin spin. It was more than 20 years ago and I was new in this country. I showed the owner and he said I won and gave me a form to fill and said to send it to the lottery office. But he kept my ticket and I believe it was either $20-$25k a month for 25 years. I was excited but didn’t know anything about the winning ticket was supposed to be given back to me but the store owner who was running a western union kept the ticket instead. Few months later he closed the shop. I guess I just let my luck slide out of my hand. I was with a friend who witnessed it

This why I always put my name and sign that ticket before I hand it to a clerk to check it. If they tell me no it's not I ask for it back
Be careful of signing it too cause if you want to remain anonymous you can't if you sign it. Just take a pic then check it and keep it locked up somewhere safe. By signing you are giving up your right to remain anonymous it depends on what you want to do.

This happened to me a long time ago. I went to check my ticket and the female clerk told me I won $10 and I instantly got an I’ll feeling. I later checked and the ticket I had didn’t have a $10 win. I wish I had signed the ticket and went to a claim center instead of the gas station. Soon after, the owner sold the gas station.

The same thing happened to me. O went to a store around the corner from my mom's house and I bought a scratch off. The male store clerk told me that I had won big. At that time the scratch offs was fairly new in Tennessee. But he said I had won big and one of his friends was in the store with him. He gave me 30 dollars and I was thinking thats not a big win. But when I thought about all the spaces on the ticket that I had won it was too late he had already got me. I called the lottery commission and told them what store it was and that store was closed a week later

There is video of every transaction. When a ticket is a winner, that info goes immed to the lottery. Any ticket over $500 has to be redeemed in person at lottery headquarters. Most employees are not allowed to purchase tickets where they work. Sign the back and check your own numbers first.

Crooked and crazy
This happened to me at Schwegel's in Alton, Illinois. The Self-check machine didn't work, so I went to the clerk to ask her to check, and she said I didn't win, but I knew I won. I asked her to give me the ticket back, and she said the store couldn't give it back to me since it wasn't a winner. I asked her to rip it up in front of me, and she started to get hostile and call for someone to get me out of the store. It was only $50 so i didn't want to make a scene in a town i was just passing through.

Some old people don't know how to use apps I had to show my mom how to use it. The stores have those ticket checker units so people can check their own tickets instead of asking the cashier.

Asian markets do it all the time I got into a argument with the clerk and she refused to give me the ticket back but I wrote my name on the ticket so they couldn’t get the money so she gave it back. I scan them on my phone first now.

The lady, her dad, and her brother actually kept most of the money and took the money to their country of origin, she got only 10 months in prison she most likely served 3 months. They did hide a good portion of the $9.2 million. case closed.
