A hint from a guy that has fixed dents for 48 years. Clamp or screw the tank down pull on your dent puller and tap around the high crown of the dent. It will come out without making a dent going the other way. Finesse not force. It was drummed into me from the start. I seldom have to use the slide weight. Start at the outside of the dent and work to the center
Ya I got 30 plus years painting automotive and industrial and just a little tug from the puller where you hold the pressure and tap the metal you can see it walk out with each tap. I got an awesome hammer made by Martin with a 10 inch spike on one end and a flat round head on the other made for just this application. Hammer was $50 20 years ago (Martin Sprocket 156FG 0.87 lb Pick Hammer).
When I worked as a motorcycle mechanic. We used to pop dents out of 2 stroke expansion chambers by pressurizing the chamber with about 25psi of air and then heating the dent cherry red. The psi would raise dramatically inside the chamber from the heat and between the soften metal and high psi it typically worked. That being said never tried on a gas tank although if it is properly cleaned prior to heating probably work really well. Typically tanks are thinner metal then dirtbike exhaust chambers.
Be careful, seen those end caps Also shoot like a bullet once heated. One ricocheted the far end of the shop to the ceiling then flung back almost 30ft. Basically the same shop as Daryl's. Imagine hitting the top corner of the wall then ceiling and coming back almost just as hard. And landing little bit past his garage door. Also this is almost a 2" rubber stopper with washers and a protruding screw. Probably close to a 1lb of dangerous fragment. That being said still very effective lol
ya I did that once and the tank flanged out from the bottom moving the lower section about two inches in each direction. Had to buy a new tank for that bike.
That's cool. I like that you show things like this as a lot of these other channels seem to want to just do add stuff for Companies instead! Yeah, I know they need the bucks for their Prod's but for get that there's a bunch of us out here who can't afford to buy all that!
grouse stuff Taryl Dactal mate and a nice technique for many people who need a little tool for removing dents out of various items like in this case a motorcycle 🏍 fuel tank etc cheers from Australia 🌏 to your area.
i made a light weight slide hammer in ten minutes of looking around my garage from a 3' piece of 5/16" steel rod that i threaded at both ends, a few 5/16" nuts and washers, a 6" piece of 1 1/4" oak dowel for a handle, a 15" piece of 3/8" copper water line , and a 15" piece of 3/4" galvanized water pipe because they fit one inside the other pretty tight, and was what i had at the time. i made it to pull a seal from a pump housing. worked perfectly, didn't cost much, and i never had to leave my garage.
Pretty handy. Im looking at the position of the dent and where it is in relation to the seat of the bike. My hat is off to the gent who rode and dented it. One tough guy!
Maybe you can shed some light on a 2 stroke Tecumseh I own. The tag on it reads T-642-04B and under that it reads 5966452. My dilemma is I haven't been able to decode it or find parts. I need a connecting rod and full set of gaskets. The blower housing has Commando 500. It is an outboard engine. Ran great then I over revved it and the rod started knocking. Haven't fired it up since to avoid more potential damage. Many info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the videos and the knowledge you spread.
I have painted many gas tanks for motorcycles and I have found it is best to just knock down the high spots and fill the dent with filler. Every time I spot welded anything to a tank it left me with a pin hole leak right there where the stud was welded to the tank. If it is very dented and filling it would not work I just got a new tank as it was easier in the long run.
It's gonna take me ten minutes to figure out how to spell pterodactyl. (Did I nail that shit on the first try?) Hey, you wanna know what the world's SMARTEST dinosaur is? A THEOSAURUS! Next, we gonna larn to spell that thar "paradigm", (pro-nounced "par-a-dine").
Hey Tyral, I did that dent puller kinda like that also. I just spot welded some small nails to a dent. Made a small pair of vice grips to fit my dent puller. Go easy, don't pull too much at a time. Then just grind the small nails off. Presto chango, no more dent.
I like all your videos been a fan for a long time I just got a new toy for 150. 5hp craftsman wood chipper /with all the videos I have seen I have not seen any on the wood chipper on how to replace the cutters on the machine can you give us some tips on how this is done maybe ?
I have a question for you. The small spring that connects from the governor to the carb on a Briggs and Stratton engine is starting to glow red hot and then it breaks. The new one does the same thing. Help!!
Similar but not the same But I do admire your innovation that’s just coming from a 40 year journeyman auto collision repair guy you gave us some guys some good ideas about how to do stuff that’s why I watch your channel
After seeing the results, you might be better off cutting the dented section off, pounding out the dent from the inside, welding the section back on and grind the weld down smooth. I seriously think it'll be just about the same amount of work...maybe less.
Any guy who has ever curbed a streetbike or rode old school dirtbikes knows that the location of this dent had to hurt. It's probably the aftermath of a involuntary vasectomy.
So since this is all about your business, what would you charge for something like this? sounds like a lot of labor, tbh, and that's often the biggest time consumer, when it comes to repairs.
Hi Taryl, I make it a number one rule, NEVER WELD A FUEL TANK. Even tacking those bolts on the outside makes it red on the inside, any gas fumes and you will be trying to think of a way to download your vids from Heaven mate.

A buddy of mine laughed at me for making a similar apparatus, then was glad I did that time a roo took out a front quarter panel on his Ute 😂
Love your dent puller ! I'd suggest using coupler nuts for the homemade adapters . Coupler nuts are much longer than plain nuts .
@@JM-yx1lm He said longer, not stronger. Rather than welding two regular nuts together. Not a bad idea.
