  • @tinykqi._.7798

At the end of the day I think it’s safe to simply not touch their tail. For any animal for that matter, if you’re going to pick something up by the tail, just don’t. Leopard geckos will drop their tails if feeling threatened (it’s meant for if an animal grabs onto its tail, it can still escape) holding any animal by the tail does not benifit them in anyway. All it does is make them uncomfortable, in pain, and cause future issues as it could devolop back problems
Unless you literally have no choice to pick it up by it’s tail for some sort of emergency, just don’t.

  • @dcartier2003

    • @JJCReptiles

They only drop their tails when theres a lot of pressure on the tail or your holding and it’s trying to get away and you won’t let it go and then it will feel the need to drop it. Leopard geckos are very smart animals and know they need to drop it if they have a reason. I have a video on my RUclips channel called Do Leopard Geckos drop their tails if you want to check it out :D

    • @JJCReptiles
      @JJCReptiles Год назад +4

@@abalt3019 that is a great question! Frank might know the answer to that but my opinion and knowledge of the Leopard Gecko no. Since yes the tail is apart of the spine of the Leo is in pain or discomfort they can drop their tails so before damage can be done to the upper spine of the gecko the gecko will detach its tail causing a fracture at the end of the spine and wait for it to regenerate. I could be wrong since we don’t have a lot of knowledge on leopard geckos but in my opinion no it does not affect the upper spine like turtles.

Even if it’s an adult that trusts you, there are ALWAYS times a leopard gecko is unusually startled by something random and usually normal for them. Longtime leo owners see their leo freak out at a random occurrence during feeding like even if the bug pokes them in an uncomfortable way and they get freaked out to the point of needing to be left alone for a bit. You never know when your leopard gecko is going to have that random spook, and grabbing the base of the tail is going to really do it for them. They may be reluctant to in most cases, but for a prey animal it will very much simulate an instance in being hunted and sometimes leos will go to instinctive behaviors of such scenario.
This was a long azz way of saying a calm trusting gecko is never ALWAYS calm & prepared

I own a bunch of geckos. I also know a lot on animals. They wouldn't drop their tail unless they were being picked up, unaware that you were there. I don't usually do this, but when I do, I always pet the gecko, and I make sure it's very aware that I will pick it up. Geckos can't drop their tail on the base, but can only drop past the base. That's why if you pick it up on the base you don't have to worry about it. But, do whatever makes you most comfortable! :)

Pick geckos up by their tail all the time... and wow, I've have zero issues. For those new to geckos, make up your own mind instead of the fear that some haters like to spread :)

I’ve seen this one the yellow gecko in my family’s house, and I tried to feed it. A big moth, but it was scared of me 💀

Personally like to show my hand in front of their face and either let them walk into my hand or simply scoop them up from the front. I think this helps not spook them with a sudden grab at the waist and helps avoid the tail drop scares.

@@davidlz830 It isn’t fine. It stressed them out to where they drop their tail. Which isn’t good

Please don’t grab your gecko by the tail
It’s not safe and has a chance of dropping it so don’t risk it or do it at all

  • @mattiebee347

Honestly there’s just never any reason to pick them up by their tail in the hobby. For breeding I can understand so you can sex them easy but that’s not information I would recommend teaching the general public because they will do it wrong especially with such little instruction. If they trust you you should be able to pick them up from their sides. Leopard geckos are already one of the most commonly abused animals in the reptile trade and people are stupid so this information you just shared will surely cause issues. I’m not trying to be a Karen but I see it all the time they’re the most commonly surrendered and rescued they always look awful when they come in. They will grow their tails back but there’s no reason to put them through that stress in the first place

If you all have such an issue with the way he handled the gecko report the content and keep it pushing. You’re just feeding the analytics and making this seen by more people. Literal idiots unironically promoting the thing you dislike.

Terrible advice. Do not touch the tail, they can get randomly spooked and lose their tail.
