I have been training in Shotokan karate for some thirty years, most with an orthodox Japanese instructor who's prime directive was that karate is not a game or a sport so we trained that way, just like the Okinawan karateka do.

Try orthodox Japanese or Okinawan karate, they tend to do the way it was meant to be learned & taught.
