    I wrote to Nikon support to see if the Anger PowerCore III Elite could be used to charge and/or Power the Z9. No answer yet but if it works on a Z7II as you describe I would think it will work on a Z9.

    great video Joe but I thought it was worth mentioning that powering the camera via usb-c is just that and doesn't actually charge the battery while inside the camera. I think this might be a bit of a common misconception and a bit misleading by Nikon in their marketing for this camera.

      Yes, I too thought that the battery was being charged when I connected a powerbank to the USB-C port. It simply prevented the battery from draining. To charge the battery via USB the camera has to be turned Off

    I just bought the Z30 and for some reason the lead seems to be very temperamental. I plugged it into the Mac to charge (per instructions) and it worked for a while. I tried to do the same thing again and it doesn't seem to work. Same with using a power bank (using the exact lead). I don't know whether it is the lead, the battery or just the camera itself.
    I know you mentioned that the lead that comes with it doesn't power the camera, but I've had instances of the led light turning on - just intermittently. Very frustrating!

    A photo, I found in a Google search, shows the EH-7P power adapter (which Nikon Claims will work to charge EN-EL15C batteries in the MB-N11 grip on my Z6 II) has a 5V 3.0A output. Several 5V 3.1A (Amperage is current drawn so more is just headroom and the MB-N11 should remain within its amperage draw range or result in slightly faster charge) wall warts are readily available and inexpensive in the USB-C output configuration. I have an Anker 20000mAh power pack that I bought to charge my phone or iPad while camping but it is USB-A and 5-6V at 3.0A output. The voltage is what concerns me since I am not sure if the MB-N11 circuitry can take the extra volt? However, it seems to me that any male USB-A to USB-C cable, also available online should work since it would not be solely limited to data like the cable that came with my Z6 II. Or did I miss something here? Also note that the EH-7P seems to be in very limited supply, most of which are “used” on eBay and Adorama has them back ordered with no receipt date posted. B+H doesn’t list it either. Does anyone out there know how much of an electrical fudge factor we actually have with our Nikon equipment?

  • @LondonBow

      Keep in mind that the USB-C is just the connector. Thunderbolt 3 (and 4) use the USB-C connector and the communication standards are backwards compatible with USB 3.x. You should be able to use a quality TB3 cable on TB3 ports as well as ports with USB-C connectors supporting USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gen 2 and USB 3.2 Gen 1, 2, 1x2 and 2x2.

    The only problem with usb charging is that it prevents tethering. The z8 has two usb ports that eliminates this limit.The batery grip also has a usb that can be used.

      Or you could use the EP-5B - amzn.to/3sDpkTt

    I have my Firmware updated to 3.40 on my Nikon Z6, but I don't have the Wrench Menu option of USB Power Delivery. So... dunno

      It is not availab le on a Z 6. You would need a Z 6II for the USB power option.

    Just so people know. usb-c QC power delivery can supply 5-9volts...
    Z cameras charge on 9volts. That is why usb-A will not work

  • @burnbarrelmedia
    @burnbarrelmedia Год назад

    You certainly can power your camera with USB-A to USB-C, just make sure it's a data-sync type cable not just a charging cable. So you don't need usb-c to usb-c

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  Год назад

      You can not power your camera with usb-a - what you are doing is using the camera battery. You can slowly charge the battery, but it isn't enough while the camera is on. The difference is in voltage and amps. USB-a does not carry the proper amount of voltage or amps.

    Unfortunately, the USB-C from the camera to the USB-C on power bank is not an option on the Z6.

    • @ShutterSpeak

      That is correct and as stated in the video and description. The Z 6 does not have that functionality.

    • @ShutterSpeak

      That type of cable does not carry the proper amount of voltage - thus it will not work.

    • @bushcraft_survival

      It does work, but the usb-a port has to support QC 3.0, then it can deliver up to 12 volts. QC 3.0 negotiates the voltage with the camera and Will deliver the appropriate voltage, mostly 8 to 9 volts. Not many powerbanks support QC 3.0, Anker does not in the powercore 3. It just has PD on the usb-c port. Then there are some restrictions on usb-a with QC; if you make timelapses with longer intervals, the port shuts off to save energy because of no demand of power is detected during the interval. I don’t know whether usb-c PD has this issue.

    • @ShutterSpeak

      That isn't covered by any Nikon documentation but I don't see why it would change anything. I would think you could still use an external battery pack.
