- Onboarding new clients in your bookkeeping business! First, I talk about how to price your bookkeeping services. I have a hiring period, a training period and then I charge clients a fixed rate each month for bookkeeping. My next secret is the most common interview questions I get as a bookkeeper when onboarding a client. The last secret is short and sweet, but it is something that gives me the most confidence in a bookkeeping interview. :)

Great video as always Morgan. Only thing I do differently is I price the "set up phase" as a fixed fee, not hourly. If I need to adjust for complexity then that is where the monthly pricing catches any shortfall up and I tell the client this when I get there and why. I get a bit of push back on any hourly billing, if you give a fixed price the client knows the sky is not the limit with your initial bill. I try to eliminate road blocks to clients signing on and IMHO hourly billing is a potential road block.
Agreed. I don't do any client work at an hourly rate. If their books are historically messy or need to be set-up, I'll give them a flat-rate quote for that project. Once that's complete and they want on-going bookkeeping services, I have them sign a 1-year contract for monthly services (flat-rate pricing). I explain to them that I ask for a 1-year contract because I'll be spending more time on the front end, so the longevity requirement allows me to make up the difference over time. I haven't had 1 client balk at that. The only thing I charge at an hourly rate is virtual training sessions, but one of my goals for 2024 is to transition that into some type of flat-rate bundle or monthly subscription service.

Hello, Morgan. Really appreciate your videos! Do you have a video on if it’s possible to directly work remote and be your own boss instead of working onsite first? I would prefer this. But I’m not sure since obviously I’ve not worked as a bookkeeper in the past.
I had enrolled in BBL in 2017, but barely began the studies. I am reconsidering getting back to it.
And I did used to work in the finance industry for 11 years in the early 2000’s, have bachelors in psychology from 1998, Master of Science in Management - Information Technology Management in 2006, and currently working as Walmart cashier in an extremely busy cosmetics department for 2.5 years in which I work autonomously and by myself practically (like being my own boss).

🎉 🎉 thank you for the videos. I am dreading drawing up a contract, do I have to do it or can the client do it? Do you have a video about contracts and what needs to be in the contract? I am also dreading telling them how much I charge...is it wise to ask them what their budget is and go along with that if it's reasonable..?
When I first started, I found a free bookkeeping contract online and downloaded it as a Word file. I just edit it for each client. I don't know if it would hold up in court, but I doubt I would ever go to the trouble of suing someone.

Alternatively and what I do is not have a contract at all. I use this as a selling point in that the client has to feel satisfied to stay with me so they can cancel at anytime. I have the same leeway, I can cancel the client at any time and that has come in handy on a few instances. The clients always pay in advance and any terms or stipulations I want them to follow I note on my invoice to them. I make the contention if they pay the invoice with the terms noted, they are agreeing to the terms. Everyone has to be comfortable in their own business and run it they way they like. I like to avoid road blocks to getting clients so decided right away to not have contracts. Good Luck!
