Hearing all of the behind-the-scenes stress that Nyanners and Snuffy articulated in their thoughts about it really concerns me. I hope that when they find a new campaign to play in, that they have fun first. I loved her character so much and with everything that has transpired on top of the fact that they were experiencing anxiety before the game, I hope to god that they don’t get turned off to the game. It saddened me that Snuffy already got partially turned off to the game… and hearing from Nyanners as well, it makes me concerned about the girls that haven’t talked about it yet like Haruka and Froot.

Nyanners actually asked about a lot of things in the Discord server that used to be Verum (It's been transferred to a new owner and renamed and basically totally rebuilt.) She sounds like she's gonna try and find another game but there's no question this shook her. I can't blame her. It's an absolute shame all these new players had this as their first DnD experience.

Well, Snuffy and Nyanners aren’t exactly DND faithful. It’s something they’d enjoy, but not necessarily commit to. I can see Haruka definitely going into DND in the future.
It still saddens me to imagine what Mousey, Taka, and Zentreya think of all this. It’s a betrayal in a way for everyone.
I’m not so much concerned about whether they will play DND, so much as coming to terms with everything that happened.

It's the fact that they were getting actual anxiety from a game that's supposed to be fun for them and getting drunk because of whatever reason it was, makes me so mad.
But at the very least, it makes me relieved that they loved the support they got from playing it and wanting to continue having fun with each other.
Hopefully they'll have fun with their new campaign. I know Brett is gonna try his best to give them a very good DND experience. And he seems very capable in my eyes. (Despite me not seeing an actual campaign of his yet, and just listening from other people)

Started watching a few of his campaigns recently (Goblins of Io, Hunters of Io, Nova Hellscape) and he really seems like such a fun, chill, and genuine DM. I can definitely see why a lot of ex-Verum players/community members are regulars in his campaigns even before this whole tragedy went down, and some of them are even the female players who Arcadum hurt like Momo and Naomi (who are both playing in Hunters of Io/Spire of Euclid and seem to be enjoying themselves a lot more now). Even Summer, a former staff member of Arcadum, can vouch for Brett both as a DM and an individual. Brett even gave her the role of "Accountability Manager" so community members can go to her for any concerns they have regarding him and she will take care of it for them. So personally I think this is suffice to say that the girls are going to be in good hands this time.
Highly recommend anyone to check out his campaigns in the "World of Io" YT channel. Been binging Goblins of Io and some of the moments there were literally the hardest I've laughed watching any D&D campaign! The World of Io is still relatively new (currently near the end of Phase 2. I believe the girls will be playing a short campaign under this Phase just to get back into the groove of DnD and also to see if they're compatible with Brett's DMing, then will be given the chance to play a longer campaign under Phase 3 if they so wish) so it's easier to catch up on and there's definitely still a lot to look forward to.

@@jrod3755 100% having recently binged the 3 campaigns you mentioned first, it feels like the players will have a lot less pressure with a lot more accommodating of a DM. For new players trying to get a feel for the game I have zero doubt Brett will do a better job at introducing them to DnD.

This is what I was saying. I would cry literal tears to have players that are as enthusiastic as they were! At first I was incredibly enthused that they would go and find a D&D "tutor" to get better at the game, and that turned to horror when I learned that they did so because of how hard Arcadum was making it on them and that he got mad at them for reaching out to anyone that wasn't him. Learning they didn't even have their character sheets or made their own backstories was just... wildly wrong.
As a DM myself, I would be appalled to learn my players were so stressed. It's a bit of a meme that the DM is often the group therapist, but that joke is based in reality, and if your players are _drinking_ to cope with the situation then everything needs to come to a screaming halt.
I hope to the gods they get to do this right the second time around.

    • @Blizaros
      @Blizaros 3 года назад +14

@@Verbose_Mode Hold on, are you saying that none of the girls had access to their character sheets during the games, and couldn't even decide their own backstories - with Arcadum presumably basically deciding their characters' entire pasts? I'm a bit of a TTRPG newbie (played several sessions on three different games and I'd like to learn how to DM), but if that is true none of that feels right.TTRPGs are supposed to be collaborative storytelling, and the girls were not even able to choose their own sides of the story and use the basic information support that allows them to be in control of their actions?
And don't get me started on how Arcadum was unable to provide a balanced challenge for new players and blasted them for what is basically a natural learning process.
I might get it wrong, I'm just extrapolating from what you said, but I don't see how any of this makes sense for a DM, especially as experienced as Arcadum is.

True. But that has little to do with Arcadum. The nature of ballancing D&D, involved jobs/commissions as well as pressure to entertain and keep a time schedule for multiparty sized campaign, is only good if all parties involved give it their 100% and even then it can fail because your essentially playing something where a dice will decide whether your character returns or not the next day. And if you compare this to a normal D&D game where your just chilling with friends and can say well ...sorry guys this fight is bullshit, my bad....it will be a dreamsequence. You know what? The contrast between HoloLive English's World of Darkness campaign and Arcadum's DM-ing style really shows the importance of allowing your players to have fun. Of course, there are difficult choices the players go through in both campaigns that test the players' ability to play the game with skill and good roleplay, but Myth-Breakers is SOO much more entertaining to watch because everyone is chill, pumped, having fun, and on board with the game. They have fun, and by extension the viewers catch those waves of enjoyment and have a great time too!
And when the players weren't feeling the game that session in Myth-Breakers? When technical issues prevented the session from being as good as it could be? The players decided with the Storyteller to switch to something else, so that EVERYONE DIDN'T HAVE TO STRESS OUT! NOBODY WAS FORCED TO PLAY! That was SOOO reassuring to watch, because it shows how having FUN was the point of the game and campaign, and when it wasn't fun, they were confident enough to drop it and do something that they could actually have fun with for that stream! Sure, those die-hards who wanted Mythbreakers may have complained, but seeing the group have fun with Gartic Phone after jumping the campaign ship rather than trying to slog through something that simply wasn't working was so REFRESHING!

But he reached out to me politely, we chatted and now they are approaching a new area that will be a bit of a sandbox.
Thing is, as a DM you are far more akin to a game designer than anything, and one of the most harrowing things you will come to understand is that despite communication being key, you need to do far more than that. You need to disect your players' statements and figure out what they are rooted in. If it were up to some players-many of the newbies especially-they would like to have it easy. It's the literal dark souls difficulty discussion. But if your players think it's too hard, what do you do? How do you make it easier? Throw less monsters at them? Throw more loot? Let them rest more often? What? And they might answer you, but their perspective of the game is not as broad as yours. Some sections should not be easy. Some should. Sometimes they just ignored your signposting.
Basically I just wasted a good few minutes of our lives bitching that DMing is hard and isn't even just about properly communicating with your players (a challenge in itself since some players are allergic to feedback, especially giving it).

I was actually excited for the girls to be a main campaign because it would bring a different atmosphere as opposed to the divine wind group. Everything started off fine and slow. Tutorial fight was literally a few rounds of cinematics and nothing else.
Then episode 5 happened and I got so confused. This was their first legitimate fight as first time d&d players. No tutorial skeletons or snarky bandits but goddamn boss with unique rage mechanics that had ruthless and deadly? Like. What? I could see that as a campaign or season finishing boss but not their first enemy. It curb stomped them hard and absolutely terrified the girls which was blatantly obvious with how many skipped or wasted turns because no one understood what was going on or that they weren’t doing much to it.
I, as a viewer got stressed out of my mind for the girls and Arcadum was just a terrible DM during that fight too. That boss fight wasn't suited for them at all and the rage bar made it harder because it gave the creature far more damage and they were like levels 3 or 4? (not sure) but that is not balanced at all. I have being DMing for 3 years in 5e and I have to say that creature wasn't built for a tutorial boss, a young dragon is a tutorial boss but not a creature that deals so much damage and has a rage bar that makes the creature deal more damage and because of that rage bar, the players can easily think that not hitting it will solve the problem but noooooo. The creature was built to punish and stress players out and it could've ended when the creature sinking into the icy lake but nope.... It came back out and killed one PC and downed and knock alot of them unconcious and some multiple times.

Its normal attacks hit harder, it had basicaly double attacks as a standart, everytime they hit or even miss it would gain rage that means it gets FLAT +2 damage per rage (that means +20 damage per hit at 10 rage, with a group at lvl proto 3) and it got extra attacks per 2 rage gained. This was absolutly silly. They had massive luck that they beat it at all.

If anyone's curious dr k, the gamer psychologist, had an interview with arcadum a while back where he talks about his rough childhood and some problems he has and perfectionism. Watching it with hindsight is pretty weird but still interesting because it kinda feels like dr k already saw some of the problems ahead of others. The goblin fight they had he did offer help and such and they all spoke positively about their experiences. Maybe that may have possibly turned as bad as episode 5 for the girls, but it turned out fine in the end luckily, and no one seemed to have a problem with it.
I thought that was who he was. I thought that, even when he was upset at chat, it was for typical stuff like backseating or something. I heard stuff like how he was such a great DM that some felt like they spoiled other DMs for them with how good he was. And his friends seemed to sing praises for him I thought.

From the start, he threw a shit ton of info at them while streaming, and they had to go throw a bunch of homebrew races (Snuffy said the only way to get info on them was to ask Arcadum) while everyone was watching. Then he threw them into the world and basically went "now... roleplay!" and then threw a a Dark Souls boss at them and went "I'm not gonna help you here, do it on your own". Like, that's no way to manage a group of newcomers.
He didn't take the time to practice with them, to show them how combat goes (he literally even said "don't worry about it") before a high stakes fight, he didn't support them at all after the session, etc. He didn't give a shit about the players and didn't adapt to their way of playing... For Callous Row, they were having several players leave who were not going to play the next Season because of crap like that.

It's helped me remember that even if I control the setting, I'm just another member of the party and I should give others the same respect as if they were in my place, so they return it with kindness
I'm disappointed that Arcadum, and many other horrors that plague the D&D community, forget that.

It's incredibly dumb all of this behind-the-scene things she and snuffy said. Like, as a DM, you have to know your players' the level knowledge, and account how they will react and feel about things. They had 1 combat before literally a monster that whooped their asses appeared, and that's fine with you're dealing with people that know about the game, and are confident about things, but they're obviously not.
Any game should have a curve of learning, and because of that, when I saw the kind of destruction the mistwalker did to the party I got mad. Like, I do not think myself too highly when it comes to DMing (or anything, really), but I do take a huge care in how to introduce new people to sessions, either new in age or experience, and how to get them used to the rules and stuff. This guy, that was considered a godly tier DM, made such a basic mistake all DMs learn early in their career in rpg that I just lost all admiration I was building up looking all he created.
Tl;Dr: arcadum doesn't look like he's that insanily good of a DM, and even before the twitlonger thing, he didn't look like a good person to be around
    Edit: corrections of minor mistakes

Arcadum was great in-game at toeing the line between an over-pushy, over-powering, and over-expecting DM and a laid back, patient, freedom-loving DM. He was almost "too good" at pacing and getting people to RP...he really controlled the storylines of his campaigns in a big way and in retrospect perhaps that's something we can at least feel more critical about now of all that life's work which was Verum...we can say Verum had it's high points and shined in ways and became more than just a DnD world but a community amongst so many Twitch personalities and viewers...but it was also flawed in big ways and that we ultimately will find EVEN BETTER DnD worlds down the road...
We have memories now, we just have to accept that verum is over but DnD will never die! Remember, DnD is best with FRIENDS!!!!!
Play at home!! Make your own campaigns. DnD is about overcoming...DnD is something built together, anyone one person is extremely flawed on there own but together we make great DnD.

I first found him from OTV playing broken bonds being dm'ed by him and i've been fucking obsessed with his content and his world ever since. Seeing him articulate, control, create these worlds and connected stories that are ever present and continuous is really mind blowing to me. He introduced me to DND and how amazing of a game it is. I've binged his streamed session vods ever since and the lore drops are wild. He became my first content creator that i scheduled to watch. Now being told that he's grooming 10 women out of nowhere is still registering in my mind. I feel so bad for the victims... Opressing it till now must've been rlly hard. Now i don't know what to do because i hope he doesn't quit dm'ing but continue it sometime in the future, is it weird? I still respect his work but i lost respect in him as a human.

That thing was incredibly powerful, it's not a monster you throw at a group of first timers on their first major fight. After that session I dropped off because it kind of became clear that arcadum wasn't there to do a big group story session with a bunch of fun characters in a world he made, he was there to push his brand. If the girls can find a DM like Johnny Chiodini who understands how important it is for everyone to be having fun in a flexible and entertining sort of way then there would be something special there. He acted like every overserious gamertype dm I've ever seen where he has the players fulfill the requirments for his novel or whatever. Those games aren't fun to play in. So I've been in a DnD campaign with a DM that made me pretty anxious and also made me feel like I had to drink to get through sessions (for different reasons ofc), and it was only after realising that nearly all of us felt that way that we stepped back from interacting with that DM as much, as (to be diplomatic) they're a complex, challenging person to be around all the time.
I can safely say that not playing at all is better than being in a bad game, or one that you were once excited for but now you're only playing out of a feeling of obligation. If its not fun, its generally ok to pull out even if it stiffs the DM a little (although a streamer depending on their group sticking around for a year and a half is a whole different thing)
But I also need to point out that a really good game will feel special; or even magical, like freaking lightning in a bottle, and so much of that is down how the DM engages with and treats the players in and out of game no matter what type of TTRPG you play.

Just reading the chat messages people could say they it was obvious something shitty was going on, but to my memory I never remember picking up on any signs of anything bad in Death & Debts... and everyone seemed to be genuinely having a great time. I never watched Nyanners' group.
So I have to ask, for anyone who's seen all of the Vshojo-involved campaigns, was there a serious shift in the atmosphere or anything you guys could detect between this group and Death & Debts, or am I just too blind to what everyone else seems to be picking up on and it was always there?

I could tell that Arcadum would do things like fudging rolls occasionally, but that's not egregious and it can create some fantastic moments. I noticed the blatant pity baiting, but imposter syndrome is a hell of a thing, so I thought nothing of it. I didn't notice anything off about the players' behaviors, so I think the changes in the atmosphere must have happened somewhere during the middle or end of the Tyre campaigns. That would be around when Steel and Silence was ongoing, and, from comments others have made, Momo especially became more and more anxious while playing. I don't think your blind; Arcadum just managed to keep the bullshit hidden until the violet arc was nearly over.

Almost to the point that those NPCs are grandstanding and becoming some sort of lead character for that scenario.
While some campaign might benefit from that narrative, seeing it come up from almost all scenarios and on different groups seems sus. It's like wanting to have the cake and eat it too.

I knew he was trouble when I watched session zero when he pulled out an excel sheet and said, "I NEED you to commit to this schedule."

Man that episode five mist walker boss fight, hearing from the players has only solidified what a shit encounter that was. And this was when people were still sucking off Arcadum to the twelfth degree, and yet the vast majority were still in agreement how poorly he ran that. The entire encounter was high stress, all the players were level 2.5 for a lv 3 fight, he refused to offer help despite this being their first fight (Yes, not boss fight, ACTUAL FIRST FIGHT) making it seem like he was doing them a favor by going hard as he was being so nice and kind before this, mechanics were convoluted and they didn't have the proper context for how to navigate it.

I support all VShojo and all the victims involved 100%
I'm so sorry for all this happening
not all us neckbeards are like this
If I ever even thought about treating anyone even close to like he did my grandparents would jump out of their graves and snatch me baldhead
and it hurts my heart so much
that the weekly D&D sessions were the highlight of my week when I would have a bad week at work
only to find out the horrible verbal/sexual crap he was in some cases forcing/blackmailing all of you to do for him
it fills me with anger and pain...
and I feel so opposite to his messed up beliefs of how a REAL MAN treats a female friend that I would castrate myself before ever letting my sex drive or ego ever endanger the friendship of anyone he became friends including all the V-Tubers I only can pray and hope no one ever has to go through this again or have their open personality betrayed in this way again ...
I love you all and Please forgive us for not knowing while you all went through that (T - T)

It’s weird how abuse is like a fish swimming in water. You often don’t know how bad it was until you get out of it, or even that it was happening. That was my childhood. I didn’t realize how messed up I was until I got out of it. Then I could see.

I used to play with a gm that made me feel the same way. It took me a long time to realize that, as much as I really wanted to play, it wasn't right.

Dms are supposed to make the party feel immersed not confused, dms can say no to players but if you want them to enjoy and want to return, to look forward to another session, you have to let them make their own decisions.

This is such a shame, to me d&d is a way to wind down and have fun with cool people, I really couldn’t imagine it being a stressful situation and I feel so sorry for who experienced it that way. Hope they find someone to play comfortably with in the future
