In networking, a hub is a basic networking device that connects multiple devices in a network. It operates at the physical layer (Layer 1) of the OSI model. Essentially, a hub is a central point where cables from network devices converge.
When a device connected to a hub sends data, the hub broadcasts the data to all other devices connected to it, regardless of whether the data is intended for them or not. This broadcasting characteristic makes hubs inefficient for larger networks because they can cause network congestion and lead to collisions, where multiple devices try to send data simultaneously, resulting in data corruption and slower performance.
