In networking, a router is a device that forwards data packets between computer networks. It operates at Layer 3 (the network layer) of the OSI model and is responsible for directing data traffic on the internet. Routers use routing tables to determine where to send packets, based on destination IP addresses.
Essentially, when a device wants to send data to another device on a different network, it sends the data to the router. The router then examines the destination IP address and uses its routing table to decide which interface to forward the packet out of, ultimately directing it toward its destination
