Funny, I recently had a Kerbal stranded on the Mun. I sent an "unmanned" vessel to pick Jeb up, but by the time I got there I forgot to remove Valentina, and that vessel got stranded on the Mun too so now I had two stranded Kerbals. Sent a second vessel that was able to pick them up but ran out of fuel in high Kerbin orbit. Sent a third vessel, rendezvoused, and successfully landed back on Kerbin safely. With my beginner-tier skills, it was quite the mission.
Mechjeb helps if you get it. You press a button and it can put you into orbit in a few minutes automatically, use RCS thrusters to automatically rendezvous with a docking port, or even land your plane for you (success isn't a guarantee, it can just smash directly into the side of the SPH or back of the runway)
For all of those raging to know, the mass of the craft seems about ~207.23264973422412671585755748691 metric tons. (Though with the thrust of the rapier varying this is hard to tell.) This was found using the engines, their thrust, the TWR of the craft, and the gravity of kerbin. First, he had 12 rapier engines on the craft, giving ~1260000 Newtons thrust. We can see that his TWR was ~.62 to start with so we use w=t/twr, substitute in w=1260000/.62 to get a weight of 2032258 newtons. Now we use m=w/g to get our mass, so m=2032258./9.80665 gives us 207232.64315540984943890115380889 kg. Or for when he gets out of the atmosphere (keep in mind this will be lower due to fuel burnt): This is easier due to the lack of atmosphere, but we do have the issue of lowered gravity. Newton's universal law of gravitation is 6.67*10^-11*m_1*m_2/r^2. This shows that gravity falls off with inverse square. So we find our new altitude 84363 m, and we add it to surface and divide by normal surface level, 684363/600000=1.140605 Now we square that, 1.300979766025 and take g and divide by that, 9.80665/1.300979766025=7.53 newtons. Now we just run our previous algorithm m=F/twr/g, gives us 138430.973235 kg, or 138.430973235 metric tons.
your rescuing other peoples kerbals? lets see if you can do this... *Begins mission to strand Valentina and Jedidiah on laythe underneath a submarine with no electric charge or fuel and "accidently" crack Valentina's helmet*

Sooooo, last night I managed to do a great Minmus science mission and on my way back I had an encounter with the mun... I shouldn't have landed... I kinda missed my suicide burn by like 10 meters and slammed down on the mun so hard that my terrier broke. Watching this clip to plan my mun rescue tonight and recover all the "lost" science. hahahaha Thanks for great videos, keep em coming!
Hey Matt, the RCS build aid mod gives you the dry center of mass in the editor for building spaceplanes, which has saved me loads of time when designing SSTOs. That way, you don't have to empty the tanks.
This is such a great series, it's really cool that you are giving back to the community like this. I gotta strand a kerbal somewhere and start a something account so maybe one day you will help me lol
I'm a little confused at like 1 min you say it is this guys first landing, and then proceed to build with nuclear engines and rapiers. how much grinding did you do to get that ????
I also said that I fully upgraded his tech tree and buildings. I just edited the save file for that though, didn't think it'd be especially entertaining to watch me grind the points legit!
Lol, was super happy with myself of managing a mun misssion with no cheats and limited tech in career mode yesterday, then watch a Matt video and realise I'm basically an infant XD
I think what you were trying to explain was the point of pivot. If you wanna "Git Guud" at taking off, make sure you put your wheels between the center of mass and edge of the wing. The closer your wheels are to the edge off your center of mass, the easier it will be to take off. (Just remember to take into account where you center of mass is when empty). Get your pivot point right, and taking off with planes is EASY is cake
There is one slight problem with this, however: if you try to design a realistic plane in KSP, half of your flights will end with a tail strike. Uless you are playing with a yoke, ut I doubt many people play KSP with a yoke... Ths isn't flight simulator, after all.
I've designed all manner of planes in KSP, realistic looking, klingon looking, reversed wings... 30 ton VTOLs - doesn't really matter... if you wanna make a plane in KSP or anywhere, you need to design with the point of pivot in mind, otherwise your plane aint gonna take off until it runs out the runway, and is gonna nose dive when it comes in to land. Aeroplane design isn't rocket science ( Ha! see what i did there) Take a ruler, put it on you finger, in the middle is the center of mass, and your finger is the wheels, the further back you move you finger, the more force you need to put on the ruler to keep it on your finger. at the tip, you need an infinite amount of force... "ruler" of thumb, put your wheels 2/3 - 3/4 along the fuse.
a small suggestion for a video, make a montage of small planes launching missiles and bombs made from fuel tanks and solid rocket boosters on kerbin at various targets (such as rovers and random kerbals or structures, or pretty much anything)
"In which me and a bunch of other users built a station around the Mun." You forgot to mention that a certain someone built a module to "hug" and deorbit the station into the Mun.
This? This is what rescue contracts in career wanted to be :) I'll point out that, in order to do a career mission with this craft you need a few billion points of science, so, you know, there's that :P
it baffles me how somebody can do orbits so well.... i cant even follow to "to the mun part 1" training scenario without getting lost as soon as it comes to adding a manouver. i just cant wrap my head around it
What if you did a mission where a bunch of kerbals go on a holiday to the Mün in a vulture class SSTO, by refueling at one of your space stations. Nice video!
how to get to the mun without setting up maneuverer nodes: if you dont want to get to orbit before going to the mun launch when the mun is coming up over the eastern horizon and pitch east, then once outside the atmosphere perform a small burn to put yourself on the trajectory, once at the mun do the same in reverse and the exact same thing to get back to kerbin (if you do want to go into orbit, head east wait until the mun is over the horizon and then do everything else from there)
Hey Matt you should do a Duna Indirect Mission...use ISRU on Minmus to collect fuel for a Minmus to Duna transport vessel...just an idea that would be an epic infrastructure build up...Godspeed and good luck...
I have been playing over two years now, and I got two good ones into orbit. One did not have enough fuel to land on the Mun, and the other one did get to Minmus and back, but exploded during reentry...
Reentering SSTOs: - First off, use at least Mk II parts, the Mk I have way too low a heat tolerance to be safe. Then, for your reentry, wait until you are above the big krakatoa/asteroid crater in the ocean, about 60° west of the KSC (+/- 30°... You know which crater I'm talking about!). - Burn retrograde until your orbit would lead you to splash down south of the big island east of the KSC. - Keep a 10-15° AoA during the entire reentry. This should bring you "close enough" to the KSC. Depending on your drag, some SSTOs will overrun the KSC. and some willl underrun it, so play it by ear once you are around 40km ASL. A higher AoA at this altitude is likely to give you more distance overall, becaus eyou barely slow down until you are at 40 km or lower, but don't go overboard or you'll lose a lot of speed for little altitude gain. Explanation: There is a bug/poorly designed feature in KSP whereby your craft will heat up significantly at around 50 km, even though it won't shed any actual velocity. This means that, if you try to do the reasonable thing and do a very shallow reentry, you are likely to explode.
I once took 7 hours to save a kerbal because I forgot a decouple between the engines and the rest of the ship. I was an idiot so I landed my kerbal on the moon using all of my fuel and his Eva pack, and then landed a new craft closeby, before walking 3 KM manually, and then launching and reverting a billion times. It was stressful, but I made it.
Well in my game, Jeb is currently adrift in deep space. He’s been out there for about a year now. Probably died of starvation. I lost contact with him after he escaped the solar system with just a command pod

With my beginner-tier skills, it was quite the mission.
U must get a better rocket and mechjeb so u can see ur fuel okay
Never in my life have a heard of a more KSP story.
I call myself a beginner and I did not even get one Kerbal on the mun yet. Just a couple ones in a orbit around the sun.
Now that's commitment
Valentina is stranded in Mun, and bill is stranded in low orbit of Mun, triying to scape of Mun.
Matt, you dubious space genius! The eagle-eyed among us noticed that highly inefficient mun launch! You won't convince us it was done on purpose!

i like how you send an ssto to the mun with no problem while i cant even get a plane in orbit
KayaGekkie try having jet engines and a rocket as well because jet engines dont work without air
KayaGekkie if you have afterburning engines toggle mode to wet as well which is the afterburner, gives some speed too
Mechjeb helps if you get it. KayaGekkie I can’t even land on mun normally

There was another eclipse at 12:48 but it only lasted about 1/10th of a second because he was time warping :)
I thought it was very hard to spot the eclipse at 12:48. Obviously, as you say, due to time warp :V
"Interplanetary Rescue!" Can you launch the next rescue missions from the Island Runway, and pretend it's a private villa in the middle of the Pacific?
The funny thing is the two dots above the U in Mun makes the U make a "oo" sound, so you're still landing on the Moon.
