  • Celebrating the legacy of one of the greatest pioneer furniture designer makers in Britain - the 2022 Alan Peters Furniture Award prize-giving ceremony and exhibition (organized by Jeremy Broun). Held at Axminster Tools (main prize sponsor) Nuneaton store, the exhibition runs from 12 October to 12 November. When adding your comments below please bear in mind the winning pieces had to be immaculately made and echo in some way Alan Peters' way of designing and making furniture. Design is not just about how something looks but includes fitness for purpose, appropriate use of materials (eg finishes) durability and understatement. Other prize sponsors include English Woodland Timbers Ltd and patrons include Woodland Heritage. Check out what the judges had to say in this critical analysis video: • What The Judges Say -...

Hello Jeremy, you might remember me my name is Paul, we spoke at length on the day of the exhibit and I must say what a thrill it was to meet you and talk about all things furniture making and tools, I was in my element! You are a true gentleman and to say I was surprised to be in your video would be an understatement, and the desk won it in my humble opinion, and having spoken to the young gent that made it also enforces my decision as he was such a shy and humble human being with in my opinion a very serious skill in furniture making. Thanks again Jeremy I hope to meet you again
    Paul the carpenter 👍🏻

Hi Paul. It was good to meet you and your contribution in the film was great. The desk was a very close call. We had to judge on photos and descriptions in advance as there was a massive amount of preparation for this event not to mention preparing the display boards in advance and meeting a magazine publishing deadline. This desk was French polished which Alan Peters himself would never use as a suitable modern finish. I will make another video that includes the judges critique on each piece then the ranking can be understood better.

Matt's table is a superb piece with faultlessly made and fitted drawers; I make this comment as one of the judges. The main reason it didn't take first place was the shellac finish. Shellac has been superseded by modern lacquers which look just as good but are far more durable. Alan Peters stated that in his opinion, shellac has no place in modern furniture making. Entrants to the award were asked to be familiar with and in sympathy Alan's way of doing things.

Lovely pieces. Each looks more amazing than the photos. Wonderful to see the pride each creator has in their piece.

    Thanks again Jeremy.
It was great to see the pieces more in depth as well as hear the artists describe and explain their process.

I enjoyed this video very much! It was nice to hear the woodworker's and jury's thoughts about the beautiful furniture. I wish I could attend in an exhibition like this one day.

Wow, excellent craftsmanship and creativity. As with Paul, I think the desk had it over the chair, but understand it would have been a difficult choice especially so having to be done from photographs. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David

Although I mentioned in the video that there is more to design (judgment) than just how something looks, the criteria for the award was to echo Alan Peters philosophy/practice and this desk superb though it is has a Shellac finish. Alan Peters would never use shellac (French polish) nor would most furniture makers today because it is soft and prone to scratches and water staining. The choice between the chair and the desk taking first prize was extremely difficult as you note. I was able to capture more detail on my camcorder on the day of the exhibition than was submitted in the entries for judging! The lot of so many good really makers is they are modest people but the salient features of an entry have to be really sold. Now the chair is outstanding because very few furniture designers can design chairs that tick all the boxes regarding design criteria. Even chairs from IKEA are rigorously tested for strength. There is maybe one chair every year that appears online that has all the ingredients eg can take the abuse a chair takes in its service and looks good from all angles). In retrospect I should have added the judges comments with this video but then it would be too long for only but a few people to watch. I will therefore make a separate video giving a critique on each piece. My ob also as organizer was to mount an exhibition that was worthy of people travelling to see it and that included a diverse range of obects. Im sorry this is an essay but in closing I have to mention the mushroom chair when judged from the pictures had a lovely matt finish. When it was delivered to the exhibition it had been finished and wax to a gloss which just highlighted imperfections. But overall a really interesting mix of designs.

@@WoodomainJeremyBroun Thanks (and the "scree" is gold). Look forward to the judges comments as this would be excellent information for me but more generally those considering entering a competition such as this. For many years, I thought there was only one winner in a competition, but I now see just entering lifts one's game and it isn't about winning its about achieving, getting exposure, meeting peers and so much more. Thanks for your work and dedication in this area. Cheers, David

I presume you mean screwthread and if so the Beall router screw threading system is featured on page 72 of my book 'The Incredible Router' which is available for purchase at www.woodomain.com/online-store.
