As a teen, it's scary because it's intense referencing to child abuse and generally horrific things that happen to the children in this world. Hats off to the developers for making a scary as hell game.
When I was younger and watched this I was also scared of the gore and stuff because I didn't even get anything about the kids

I'm watching this as an adult who never played the game. It's not scary. It's absolutely horrifying because of the general trauma on every character involved. The gore isn't nearly as scary as that

When the shadow monster said clothes taken off by the holy man, he also said mommy didn’t believe you. So that means when the boy told his mother about it, she didn’t believe him. :/
The shadows are a perfect way to show childhood trauma.. when i saw the little girl who was victim of sexual abuse, the way the shadow was holding her, where he put his hands on her, that constant feeling of intrusion she feels, wanting to drown in her drawings to escape, forget… and harming herself to ease the pain when she can’t escape it.. its a familiar feeling, the game is spot on, and its always calming and reassuring to see people being affected by that, mark has a great following

@@akira-san661 also the fact that she was a doll could symbolize how she felt helpless against it and the abuser could do what they wanted with her. So sad, the creators put so much thought into it though and so many small details were added that make you pity the children in this game even more if you notice them.
The Reference of demonic or dark spirits haunting the people who are absolutely tortured by past things and the dark spirits telling them the negative things is how it feels.
Maybe their isn't an explanation in the spiritual world we don't know yet, something of science we don't know yet.
I find it interesting, maybe it's something to look into.

Unfortunately for me, my dad wouldn’t do anything or care either. Honestly, if someone wants to have children then they have to be 100% willing to be there for them no matter what. Children aren’t trophies that collect dust later once you stop caring about them. Don’t expect them to be a good functional human being just by feeding them, leaving them to their devices, and not spending any time with them.

It’s really fascinating how the shadows mirror the children’s trauma and abusers, how they seem to have such a tight grasp on these kids. The game discusses such dark topics but retains a humorous tone because the character is a ten year old child. The worst part is there’s little we can actually do to help the children other than satisfy base desires

The creatures are talking to the little kids. When they have the text it’s not you talking to the shadow or the shadow talking to you. It’s the children’s deepest thoughts and insecurities. The shadows are more like a metaphor for the children’s mental disorders and their biggest worries.

I'm glad everyone is recognizing what happened to the girls. But as someone who has a little brother who was molested, I really wish more people would point out what happened to that little Blonde Boy. I'm thankful for situations like that being represented. Little girls aren't the only children that can be a victim to pedophiles and It's somewhat comforting to know that others sometimes acknowledge that. Felt like the whole world mostly ignores horrible things that can happen to little boys, too.

I never saw that, but that’s really sad... it’s really bad to think people actually think that’s ok to do! Sometimes, I want to seriously ask people what they were thinking, because that could easily happen in real life. :(
So I think what happened was that the “king” and the little girl were sexually abused as the shadow was saying sexual stuff that happened to the king and the little girl had hand prints on her chest, thighs, and her bed. The guy right next to frans room seems that he suffers from paranoia (as the paper says). Isabelle is a bit harder to know though. I think that she suffered from sleep paralysis, as if she looked like she has passed out and the monster is touching her as she sleeps (I’m not really sure though) and the guy next to Isabelle looked like his parents would mentally abuse him. They would say that they cared about him (things like im doing this because I love you etc.) while also not feeding him or making him do things to him that he may not want to. The guy with the mask in the cafe looks like he has personality disorder as he hides his face from the world and the shadow says “oh little boy, everyone is ashamed of you” I could be wrong about these btw

I just realized sm, on Fran's document next to her bed, the date is 7/25/1944, but later in the game when she digs up her parents graves, the graves read 7/27/1944. The document was printed two days before their death

I know that nobody is going to see this because I’m fucking *EONS* late, but that might be the reason why her parents were treating her so nicely at the beginning. ether to try and make her last days at home nice by getting her a cat and having her favorite aunt visit to hang out with her for a while. or as a last ditch effort to try and make her feel better and help with her mental state.
It could also explain why the mental asylum seemed so willing to take a seemingly random little girl in just because she seemed a little cookey. if the asylum was already expecting her, and her visit was already pre-paid for, then it wouldn’t be much of a surprise that she snapped. and it probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal to the absolutely *✨wonderful✨* staff there if they already had the cash.

Fran and Misfortune would be such good friends. I love this game. The horror, it’s realistic. It explores real-world problems and it’s just amazing. Major props to the developers for making such an amazing game.

I was thinking that! But more like "this is somehow almost worse than little misfortune" but. Not really. Two traumatized young girls who have seen other kids experience trauma. Misfortune was manipulated, abused, and neglected, and only found comfort in a fox. Fran found comfort in her cat after her parents died. She knew the horrors that happened to the other kids. She was also neglected in a way, by the staff.

Rewatching this and truly understanding what those poor kids went through. Both the little girl and the blonde king boy make me upset but also happy in the representation. Fran Bow is an amazing game in such ways.
Support and respect for everybody in the the comments who understands and knows about the children's struggles in the hospital. 2 of them are decidedly victims of sexual abuse, one of them even has issues with self harm as a result probably. Her head thinks it's because she draws, she gets tied up in probably a straight jacket (maybe not, but that's my thoughts). One might have a personality disorder, another might've been mentally abused by parents, one more possible sleep paralysis (got these from a fellow commenter, will put their name in if I find the comment again), and then the boy next to Fran has severe paranoia.
It's good to be able to understand these people are typically/usually victims instead of abusers. Mark seems to understand that and it's an amazing thing to be able to understand and empathize like that.
Also, mind the grammer. Never been good with commas.
I remembering watching this when I was only 8 or 9 years old and I legit didn't know anything-
It seems like a priest had molested one of those children. "Mommy was not there, daddy would not care" sounds like either the mother is dead or divorced and the father has custody, and maybe the father is emotionally absent for his kid and feels little to no empathy, which is why he didnt care when it happened.

It's supposed to be the equivalent to a straightjacket but in dress form.
It reminds me of the book "The Giver." Little kids have jackets that button up the back so they have to help one another. Maybe it's so they can learn codependence, since so many seem like they have trust issues.
I grew up emotionally abused and neglected, developing c-ptsd and therefor hallucinate. I remember as a kid that I related to Fran Bow, now as I'm older I see our struggles were different, but it's still nice to have a game that's paints a picture of struggles children can go through.

I rewatched this while recovering from surgery and realized that those shadows are the afflictions of the children. With Isabell for example (the girl who was passed out in the television room) when you take the pill and see the shadow she is being caressed by the shadow signaling that she is there for a similar reason as the girl with the crayons (who’s shadow watched over her showing that she was being preyed on by someone and we know she is dealing with trauma after sexual abuse) these shadows signify what is going on in the minds of these children.

You know, rewatching this several years later and several years older, the game is... really more dark than I remembered it being. Really it's quite interesting how you perceive things different depending upon how old you were/are.

All of this went over my head as a kid. When I first watched this, I knew about death and murder, but I hadn’t learned about abuse, or sexual assault. Coming back now, parts of the game make more sense.

And it's all in one connected universe!
I'm just saying, the demons from each game (Remor and Morgo ) look somewhat similar.
Especially the skull design for a face, the black fur/skin and horns/antlers. Also that they both are associated with death!

I think the worst part is that since this is taking place in the 1940's the mental patient care doesn't really have any practices that would work or would be considered safe by today's standards. Also many different things that are 'normal' were considered asylum worthy. For example, masturbation and "same-sex attraction" would get you institutionalized.

Not to mention that a lot of "mental illness" was actually named for women by men who didn't want to ruin their "reputations" by divorcing the women, so they just tucked them away in mental institutions.

Most games that use a little kid as the protagonist usually portrays them as a more mature child, but this game actually shows Fran as a kid with a child's personality. It's rare you find games that use a kid's personality for a child rather than an oddly mature preteen.

I know my comment is going to get lost in thousands but, this video series on marks channel of him playing Fran bow was one of the highlights of my childhood. I remember years after watching it the first time I would forget about it and have a glimpse of watching it and immediately try to remember what it was called I’ve watched this series probably 12 times over the course of 6-5 years. Last time I watched it it has probably been over a year and a half. It’s my daily 1-2 year update.
I first watched it when I was 10 and now I’m 16. I used to live with my parents and siblings and now I live with my grandparents and have been for 4 years. It just reminds me so much of how much I enjoyed this insane little game and especially marks commentary and the way he goes about playing the game overall.
I cannot thank him enough for making my overly dark childhood memories have a bright spot.
