This tutorial has likely saved me hundreds of dollars in repair fees. I really appreciate you sharing in such a detailed way how to repair this popular problem. I’ve got a 2004 Tacoma and you helped me out years ago and now I’ve found this tutorial again (as I bought a cheap replacement handle and they don’t always last) and I’m so very thankful. I’m about to start another replacement today. Thank you Jason!!!
You are awesome! Your patience and details and camera work allowed me at 67 and a woman to change my door handle. My truck is a 2000 so slightly different but close enough. Toyota awesome design and easy to work on. Dude you made me feel proud and not frustrated thru the whole process. Your precise explanations about the clips and screws and rag tip on the window handle were awesome. You are awesome!
Thank you very much for your video !! You helped me like you would not believe !!I love the idea using the rag to help remove the retainer clip on window handle. Without you I could not have repaired my Toyota Tacoma door handle.
Excellent explanation from beginning to end. Clear and definitive advice and video. If this dude made all the videos I needed I'd never need a mechanic. Thanks for the quality including the professional language without profanity.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make such a detailed video! Got mine replaced yesterday, and I suspect there would have been a good deal more swearing and yelling involved without this video. Much appreciated!
Jason, just a massive thank you from Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the clear guide on how to do this. Being a pretty a non-mechanical, non-garage kind of guy, I followed your instructions step by step and things went terrific for me fixing the driver's side handle on my 2003 Tacoma. You taught me about my truck, and you helped me to save some money and gave me some confidence I could do some upkeep on my vehicle myself. You helped me tremendously. Much appreciation.
Great video! Extremely detailed. I really liked how you showed the use of the shop rag to remove the clip for the window handle clip. I didn’t know that clip was even there and would have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get that handle off. This video saved me time and money. Thank you for your knowledge and for uploading this video.
Awesome video. I looked at two others and yours was by far the best. Your idea of using a micro fiber towel to remove the door handle clip worked great. Thanks
I put off this repair for a year because I assumed it would be very difficult. Your video had all the perfect tips to make it very easy, and I was done in less than an hour. Awesome ! Thanks a ton.
I've used your video twice now for a flawless repair. Well flawless if you don't count the four door panel studs and the clip to the interior door handle all breaking when taking everything apart. "Gentle but firm". Flawless after that. Seriously, a great vid that helped a lot. Thank you so much.
Thank you for posting this video. It helped me install both of my door handles & locks on my 2001 Tacoma! Very informative & easiest tutorial to follow.
My neighbor wanted me to replace her door handle to her 90's Tacoma. She brought the handle that she got from Advance Auto or one of the other auto places. They charged her $70 for the handle. I thought that was high but looking on Amazon I found it for $8. Yes, that's right $8. Watched this video and put it in in about 30 minutes. Thank you for taking the time to post this video and saving my neighbor that money that she can really use this time of year.
Great instructional video! Thank you so much! The rag trick was what I was hoping to find on you tube. No more tearing up the liner trying to get to that dang clip.
Thank you so much. This was by far the most helpful video of them all. You saved my life, I had to fix my father-in-law’s car last minute. Thank you Car Jesus.
Thanks for making this video. Mine was cracked and had to buy a new one. Then I had to figure out how to fix it. So I Googled and your video came up. I watched and followed every step. SUCCESS!
Good video, thanks for your help. Guy's like you that take the time to pass along your experiences actually provide a great service. You're the good guys that save us weekend warriors time and effort. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much Jason, there are several other videos online but yours was the most helpful and attention to detail. Just finished my handle replacement this morning. Thanks again!
After watching this video I was able to change both handles on my Tacoma that have been broken for over 2 years!! Wish I would have come across this sooner. Good job!
I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma V6, no power windows or locking, and same principles. I did find a hole that helps get the far bolt out MUCH easier. I think it was designed for that. A little piece of plastic covered it. The aftermarket handle had a weird fit but I made it work.
Very good video. I could not have done the repair without it. My mechanic wanted $150, so I got the part ($11.98 online) and did it myself. There were only two things that gave me trouble. The first was removing the upper rod from the old door handle. The second was reinserting one of the bolts holding the door handle to the door--it was very difficult to get the first couple of threads going before being able to tighten it with the wrench. I guess my hands were about three sizes too large. The total time spent on those two things took longer than everything else combined. But as I said, great video, so thank you.
Excellent video. I've been dreading doing the handle replacement but seeing this has given me confidence. Neat trick with the rag to pop the clip out! I've also read that you should lube any joints for the rods to make it work more smoothly.
This was insanely helpful! The only thing I struggled with was the old yellow clip on the thick bar. I couldn't get the bar out until I cut the plastic from the outside. Good to know since I'll have to do the driver's handle soon! Thanks again!
Wow--I am trying myself----you are great w/ all the possibilities to go wrong-!!! 2002 stock Tacoma same handles , I think? THANK YOU!!! ONLY person ever on You Tube subscribed to
Right on time finding your video... mine has cracked/ broken plastic making it extremely difficult to open. Your video makes it all look so easy. Maybe I'll try replacing it myself instead of using a repair shop...
+duinnerfs It isn't very hard but it can be a little aggravating if you've never done it before. It will save you a fortune in repair costs. The handles themselves are not that expensive butt I'm sure paying a shop is. Good luck.
Thanks for the great video. It was super helpful over the weekend, especially the rag trick with the window handle. Just an FYI, there's a black grommet that can be removed to give easier access to the inner bolt of the door handle. Pop off the grommet and you can use a longer extension to access the inner bolt instead of shoving the wrench inside. Hope this makes sense.
Very informative video,. Great tips how not to struggle through the handle replacement. One other thing I will add -- instead of oiling the locking cylinder, use graphite -- doesn't attract dirt which will wear out the lock pins.
As a woman, I am not savvy to auto mechanics but after watching your video I am going to try this myself. To hire it done, the parts are $70 each door plus labor. I cannot do that so I bought both handles for under $20 for both. My labor is 0-. Thanks so much for your thorough video!!!
hope it lasts but I got the cheap handle and it lasted 3 months, the original 15 years,so if it breaks buy from the dealer. The cheap ones are knockoffs made in China but the dealerships are made by Toyota, pricey though.

I was dreading this even though I pretty much knew I couldn't do any damage to the motor, at least I assumed...and I didn't. I did this in a little over an hour.
There are a couple things that I would add to the conversation here:
I found a brand new mirror at my local junkyard. Brand new in the box for $35. Can I say it was original equipment as in an original Toyota part? No, of course not (brand was TYC), but it seems to be just fine for a 17 year old vehicle.
Also on the thicker of the 2 bars that attach to the new handle, the clip for the bigger one snapped, which I was concerned it might. I live in Phoenix and plastic becomes very brittle. Not to worry, my new handle had a brand new one already attached to it.
I also didn't have to unplug my speaker as I was able to just set the panel down on the ground leaning up against the door. Plenty of access to the door handle. No undue stress to the wiring.
Other than that one of the snaps that hold the panel on broke, but it is only one and it doesn't seem to rattle or anything. LOVE my 2001 Toyota Tacoma. 17 years and still going strong.

Is it true that a worn out spring in the door lock mechanism may be the cause of repeated failure of the outer door handle? The inner handle works fine but the outer handle needs to be replaced for the 2nd time in a year. The nonpower lock is also functional. I'm thinking of replacing the lock when I repair the handle mechanism this time around. Thank you for the helpful videos!
+Julia Meadows the handle probably has a bent or worn release lever. That's what happened to mine. You're better off replacing it.
+Julia Meadows if you have power locks, they can contribute to the handle failure. I had to disconnect mine because they bent one of the linkages.
It's not a power lock. I'll do as you suggest and replace the whole thing. Thank you.
That is what I had to do after I tried repairing it several times.
