How to Replace Instrument Cluster Light Bulbs in 2001-2004 Toyota Tacoma

  • UPDATE: I've made a follow up video to this one, addressing the question of what type of light bulbs these are in the cluster. Follow this link to learn more!
    • Follow Up to Tacoma In...
In this video I go through the steps of replacing burned out instrument cluster and climate control panel illumination light bulbs for a 2001 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma. This truck I'm demonstrating on is a 2003 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 2WD with a 3.4 liter V6. The basic steps will also apply to most makes and models. There's a lot of dash trip parts that has to be removed to access the instrument panel, but the steps are basic and you can save a lot of money doing it yourself instead of paying high labor costs at the shop. Note: Always disconnect the battery before removing electrical connections to prevent any damage due to electrical shorts.

Thank you so much for making this video! I drive a 2003 first gen. truck. I own a Haynes repair manual... but, unless I read it wrong, the book is telling me that I need to take the steering wheel off, to be able to get to that instrument panel! I was about to start taking it off, but then found your video.
I just need to replace a couple of those tiny bulbs there. Taking the steering wheel is a pain... Plus, comes with a bit of a risk of getting hit in the face with that airbag, lol!
Thank you again, was super helpful.

I just got a 2004 Tacoma and I am doing about 20 different things it needs. But it is a solid truck so all will be good.
****I only have one dead light on the dash. The large one on the far right. The other bulbs are fine. Wish I could reach that one bulb without all of the dismantling. It is not a hard job following your steps though.

Excellent video Mike! I changed out all the bulbs in the instrument panel in my 03 Tacoma. I didn’t want some of the not burned out bulbs failing in a couple of months. One thing I noticed was that there was an orange rubber sleeve that slid over a couple of the bulbs. All the original bulbs were clear. I took the sleeves off and put them on two of the new ones I got. Now the panel looks exactly as before. Thanks!
