This is when cars WERE cars, full of individuality and stuff you could work on without the need for a silly diagnostic computer like nowadays. A real trip down memory lane. Oh how I miss those days.
I used to think ECUs were a terrible idea but at the end of the day it is one component that can replace so many mechanical systems cheaply and much more flexibly that it is worthwhile in the end so long as you don't have more than one of them (all that should be necessary). Electric windows on the other hand... And don't get me started on electronic handbrakes. Of course probably the bigger problem with ECUs other than the ECUs themselves is that they need a motor or solenoid to interact with everything mechanical. Solenoids should usually be pretty simple and generic but rotary motors I suppose can introduce unnecessary complexity. A microchip is of course completely unrepairable but the in theory it shouldn't ever break through normal use. If it does break then it is just the closed design problem enforced by car companies. They should only need cheap off the shelf microcontrollers. There are ECUs made from scratch from arduinos so they can't be massively difficult to replicate.
What I do have a problem with is every individual component having its own complicated circuit or computer system. At most they should need a simple link for the central computer to control them by.
don't miss those times, get AX . I did and I am over the moon with it

1:09 "I want a Waldorf Salad! And to follow a couple of filet mignons! Steaks! Done Rare! Not out of a bottle!"
😂😂😂👍
What is a Waldorf anyway…… a walnut gone bad?
I'm sorry but we seem to be all out of Waldorf!
I own a 1989 F plate AX diesel (FYI 5-door, and red) and I can confirm that the engine sounds are 100% accurate!
I got an '89 4doors TRD :)
I got an '88 GT. That still gets 650km off range if you drive normal. When driving like a maniac (it can be fun in that car) it's about 400km with a 43 liters tank. And it sounds better imo :)
Great seeing all the cars and stuff I remember as a small kid. A real trip down memory lane :-D
I had two of these, including one in red! A tin can on wheels; slow and noisy. Performance wise, nowhere near as good as a modern hdi. In terms of reliability, however, its mechanical fuel injection was far more reliable, and the cast iron cylinder block not prone to warping due to overheating through blown head gaskets, as on the AX1.4D.
My 5-door, AX1.5D in red, was acquired secondhand in May 2006, with186,000 miles on the clock, from a dodgy eBayer, at only £230, with a year's 'ticket'. Initially, it had starting problems due to the fuel filter system, but when modified, it never missed a beat. It burnt oil, but not excessively, and after a few thousand miles, the coolant level needed slightly topping up. By 300,000 miles, the head gasket was almost on its last legs, but the car still kept clocking up the miles, with no reliability or performance problems worth mentioning.
Eventually, at 334,000 miles, the headgasket finally went and the car was scrapped. Running costs were almost negligible beyond what you'd expect in terms of tyres, brakes, exhaust, oil and oil filter. The most expensive repair was a replacement back axle due to both radius arm bushes going at around 260,000 miles. Amazingly, it never needed a replacement clutch, unlike my earlier AX1.4D which got through one at 50,000 miles, and which forced me in the middle of Preston town centre, after midnight, tired and wanting to get home, but with over 100 miles to go, to drive it without a clutch (don't panic Captain Mainwaring!!). Fortunately, however, my battery, alternator and starter motor didn't let me down.
Fuel economy was always very good - about 63mpg, driven with care - but certainly not 80mpg as stated in the commercial. The AX1.4D could easily return 86mpg if you kept the speed down and annoyed all other road users of trunk A-roads and motorways!
I had the 1.0, two 1.5D and the almighty 1.4 GT and enjoyed them all until my first ZX.
Can't wait til you release more content, LOVE these old car videos.
"Celery, apples, walnuts, grapes - in a mayonnaise sauce!" I used to get over fifty mpg in my XUD TD Xantia, which was a lot heavier, so their claim of 80 mpg (although rather boastful) is probably not far from the truth. Don't forget this was much lighter than a modern car of the same class. No leccy windows, air bags, electric seats and rubbish...
It's true! It makes 4l of diesel per 100km. My old ZX with this engine made between 4,5 and 5 depending on city or b roads. It was great on economy so I suspects it had low emissions as well if the consumption was this low.
Absolutely brilliantly cars. I still have an M reg 1995 AX Debutwith a whole 30k miles on it. Far more comfortable than anything built today
For sure, mine is also the most confortable car that I have ever driven. The seats are just incredible.
I had an AX GT Mk1, and then a mk2. Fabulous cars, I wish i still had one now!
I loved my AX!
Loved these, the last 1.4 diesel even had a longer 5th for even more mpg
AX 14D is a nice little car.
Great little cars, luckily the head gaskets were really easy to do... I'm pretty sure they were on a timer, 40 thousand miles and you'd need a new one...
In the unlikely event that my wife calls me to get some salmon, I am probably going to go to Lidl and not buy a car/Scottish holiday on the way. But great advert!
Lovely stuff. Thanks for posting!
What a great video! It took me quite a few seconds to realise when I had seen Bruce Boa before (Faulty Towers!).
Such a shame it was muted in a few places. I assume down to music copyright.
The video is now unmuted :)
That is fantastic
They really should've got John Clease to play the part of the guy on reception
Too expensive - But great idea!
@@MagicAyrtonforever Not too expensive to do ads for Accurist watches. And beer in Germany
Cricky! This is longer than a Dormeo mattress advert, and that's saying something!
I love the little AX. why did the sound keep cutting out though?
There’s copyrighted music playing on the video that RUclips doesn’t allow. It’s a pain isn’t it
The sound is now complete!
I had 2 Ax bought used: the 1988 1.1RE that engine was very tough and pulled really well, it was very reliable and comfortable, except the dashboard who cracked a lot and I also had a commercial 1.4 Diesel (second series) much better built, fun to drive and super economic but the dies engine was very prone to head gasket failure
Citroen - The New AX Diesel - A Fish Out of Water (1989)
The Citroen AX was rebadged as the Proton Tiara here in Malaysia, back in the 1990s. My granduncle had one, and while the car is nice, it was too European and quirky for Malaysians used to Japanese cars.
It never sold well, and now is very rare on the road.
He had to take a little.back road called the M5....he couldnt find the freeway.....
The motorway scene is filmed not far from my house.
Diesel engineered his original engine to run on peanut oil.
Bit too long this promo but still pretty likeable. I can imagine the little ax diesel being all the a to b transport youd need around scotland even in winter months
I meant to buy an AX, back in the day. Bought a Sierra Sapphire instead. Crashed it, mind you, so I was probably better off in the big Ford.
Back in that era I suspect the AX was probably more crash worthy than the Sierra. Though nothing really stood up to impact like modern machinery. Glad you weren't hurt.
He had to drive down some crumby back street called the m4
He wants a Waldorf salad
Put a diesel engine in a car with panels made of plastic, could quite believe you would get good fuel economy.
小粋なダブル・シェブロンの新世代コンパクトカー
Beep Beep Beep. Aye Jimmy. Think with ya dipstick.
Wow 80 mpg newer diesels can’t reach that these days something definitely going wrong nowadays wink wink tug tug
Well, you could certainly get 86+ mpg, from an AX1.4D, but that meant keeping the speed down to about 50-55mph and always maintaining a light foot on the throttle. Problem was that the 'gutless' engine slowed right down when encountering even motorway gradients, if driven that way. I actually got stopped by cops on the M74 for driving too slow! Being Scottish, they suspected drink driving! I now drive a Focus 1.6TDCI and its trip computer regularly shows 73mpg when driven in a similar manner. Its engine doesn't have the same problem with gradients though, and it's a much nicer car to drive. The AX doesn't deserve classic status: in my opinion it was never that good, apart from the AX1.4GT. Even that was no Renault 5GT Turbo, Fiat Uno Turbo IE, or Fiesta RS Turbo!
O-60… how fast….?
60… what do you mean by 60…. meters??😬😂😂😂
The car rental lady is so hot and pretty ❤️
Tracy Childs
ha ha ha very funny !
That car rental woman is hot.
She was in Howard's way as was the American guy driving the Citroën
@@chrislockey7706 the American guy is Canadian born actor Bruce Boa. He was also in Fawty towers and The Bond Film Octopussy. But also the Film The Omen.
The actress Tracy Child's.
80mpg really...had a golf that did 60mpg and i taught that was good
Diesel engineered his original engine to run on peanut oil.
80mpg in the mid 1980's thanks to all the stupid eu regs, cars 30 years later dont get this, thanks for nothing
I had an AX14RD, I had a GTD, if I drove it at the same speed as I drove the AX the MPG was better, it's also roomier while doing it. And my AX use to smoke like a chimney and I would not want to have hit a crisp packet in it. Saying that I loved the AX, the dreadful thing I hate about modern cars are the plush frilly cabins with LEDs and the 18" alloys, just give me the safety kit and you can keep the rest. Saying that the Golf will probably be my last car, driving with all the traffic now is boring, in the future I will prefer buses and take a taxi when there is not a bus.
YES! All this stupid stuff! Airbags, ABS, ESP, side impact protection, crumple zones, emission restrictions...stupid crap! Just don't crash or breathe and you're fine! Bloody EU!
+alexger85 I hope you are being sarcastic! They are the things that would have stopped my friends wrapping an XR2 around a tree and ending up 6ft under.
Yeah, bloody 'uman rights an all.
