  • Patrice O'Neal in studio, trying to figure out which sport is most dependent on luck. This hilarious debate includes analysis and discussion of Baseball, Hockey, Soccer, NASCAR, Golf, Tennis, Basketball, Football, Softball, Equestrian, Wrestling, etc. to determine what qualifies a sport and which sports are most reliant on luck. Later, Sam Roberts joins the program to share his lack of football knowledge as he gets roasted for his dry hair and sleepy eyes.

baseball is the correct answer, if you think about hitting the ball. Baseball players have the least control over the ball when hitting, when compared to all other sports. Baseball is the only sport in which the balls ultimate location is determined by both the pitcher and the hitter equally. When shooting/throwing the ball in other sports, the skill falls onto the individual player with the ball. I think the MLB knows this and this is why they play so many games per season

I love baseball but imagine seeing your favorite team has been hitting the ball hard all day but right towards the fielder. Then the opposite team has been getting fooled and making weak contact yet they've got 5 runs because every hit was just barely out of reach of fielders. Irregularities in the ice and boards/glass can have an impact. “Bad bounces.” The insane tempo increases the impact of some of these things sometimes. Other times the goalie gets lucky when the shooter inexplicably misses the open net, or just happens to hit a piece of the goalie’s equipment when there were many open spots. The arbitrary nature of which penalties do and don’t get called also has an impact.

Basketball has the most luck. A poorly shot ball can bounce into the net and still counts for points. Also there is no determining which way a basketball will go on a rebound or who will come down with a jump ball. Really any game that is based around hitting a non-mobile target (basketball, hockey, bowling, archery, darts, pool, golf, soccer, field goal kicking in football) are going to have the element of luck. If you can make a poor shot and accidentally score points for it, that's luck.
