- This is Les Fruitbat Carter and Jim Bob Morrison.... otherwise known as Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine playing a cover of the Pet Shop Boys classic Rent - at their Brixton Academy 1991 gig. This hasn't got the traditional "You Fat Bastard" chant from the crowd. For once. This is official (non mobile phone their weren't any then, or if they were they were too big and incapable of taking footage) footage of the gruesome twosome in their heyday.
Starting off as Jamie Wednesday... they made their name with a distinctive style of power pop, fusing samples, sequenced basses and drum machines with rock 'n' roll guitars and off-beat wordplay-loaded lyrics. They reached the height of their fame in 1991 and 92. Over the following years the band took on new members, topping out as a six-piece, but struggled to regain their earlier popularity. They initially split up in 1998 after releasing seven albums.
They have come together for one off gigs, the last being sell out gigs in London in November 2009, titled "The Drum Machine Years". Over the course of two nights the band played their first four albums in their entirety, plus encores.
Now the USMs are back for two concerts in November, 2011 at Brixton and Manchester, known as Norf and Sarf 2011. It'll be RUBBISH!
30 something and 101 damnations both still feel me with joy everytime I listen to them.
A brilliant, awesome and under appreciated group.
wish that I could click thumbs up multiple times
This is better than the original, only Jim Bob and Fruitbat could take a lullaby and make it wall-shakingly epic.
Davey R ah now it’s brilliant but the original is THE best
This one's better for singing Tooting Broadway instead of Fulham 😍 (local bias)
@@gigteevee6118 Agreed!! 😁
Neil Tennant also said it was better than the original!
This and the Liza Minelli (PSB produced almost Bond-esque cover) are better than the original. It is a great song though (sorry Neil and Chris!)
Me? Oh I was there!
