    The original UniFi's have that visceral bass too. (When powered well) - The original UniFi's are still the best value in sound. The Reference UniFi's are probably a bit better, but not by much and cost a whole lot more... If you have a 100WPC high-current amp (or higher) get the original UniFi's. You won't believe how good they are! - Accurate, detailed, powerful, balanced, and if set up properly the sound-stage is truly next level.

    Awesome review Randy! I appreciate the occasional "expensive" review, especially with a product like this, where you've covered ELAC's options that apply to the channel's premise. Gives a look at what's the next step up in the line, which some of your listeners will be interested in. Thank you!
    I just bought the Uni-Fi UB52 and UC52 for the fronts in my bedroom HT. I'm really happy with them, but if these would have been an option just a few months ago, I might have choosen them.
    I really like the finish on these over the UB52. Looks aren't a huge concern in my current application, but I'd still like a nicer looking speaker. I'd love to have the 6.5" woofer over the 5.25", but with an SVS SB2000+, more a luxury than need.
    Reality is, these are twice the expense of my current speakers. Not sure which I would have went with, if both were options when I bought. Guess I dodged a bullet not torturing myself deciding between them!

      As an apartment dweller, I second this motion. A lot of fine speakers really need to go to six or seven on the Spinal Tap scale before the listener begins to get a sense of depth and breadth.
      One brand that tends to shine for me at lower volumes is Bowers & Wilkins. Any thoughts on the new Elacs versus B & W bookshelves near the same price point, like the 606 S2?

    • @erics.4113
      @erics.4113 3 года назад +2

      I'm having the same questions right now. I'm looking at mostly 6.5" bookshelves and did a demo yesterday. I'm now wondering if I want 5.25 or smaller. I want fidelity at lower volumes..

    • @darensweeney5925
      @darensweeney5925 3 года назад +2

      Also agreed. Fullness at low volumes is important for those of us with tinnitus. FYI, EQing the lower bass and treble up a few dB's will also improve the sound at low volumes.

    • @erics.4113
      @erics.4113 3 года назад

      @@darensweeney5925 some amps have loudness buttons that will do a +6db on the lower end for this effect at lower listening.
      I just got ub52 Elacs and compared to the rp600ms can say i would rather listen to the Elacs at lower volumes. That isn't an endorsement for those being good speakers at lower volumes, just observation between the two so far.

    Great review!.....I’ve watched your channel damn near since it started. I think it’s great that you review speakers that are a “step up” for most of us. It provides good idea of what to expect from an increase or even doubling of the “affordable” price points you typically cover. I was between the UB52’s and the DBR 6’s but I think I’ll save up for these bad boys. So what if it takes awhile lol

    I tried to buy a 55 gallon drum of Andrew Jone's British Salsa, but thanks to the "CheapAudioMan Effect," they are all sold out! However, they do have 50 lbs bags of Andrew Jone's British Tortilla Chips still for sale, and plenty of 1 gallon jugs of Andrew Jone's British Margarita Mix.
    I really like what Andrew is doing here in regards to this design. He should get a major award just for the front porting of the speakers, which is where ports BELONG. Rear porting is the spawn of satan. If I were in the market for bookshelf speakers of this size, these would be near the top of the list. But, I would like to hear the Wharfdale EVO 4.2's as well.

    Great to see this review. Well done.
    I would like to see a comparison to the Wharfedale Evo 4.2. Also $1,000, also 3-way, and also relatively large. In terms of aesthetics Wharfedale is serious competition if it sounds decent.
    Also, I would love to see a comparison between this vs. your favorite $500 speaker + $500 subwoofer pairing.
    Also, speaker reviews that include an AVR are useful to more people. Is a Denon X3500h, which people can usually pick up for about $500 on sale, enough to drive this?

    • @kohnfutner9637
      @kohnfutner9637 2 года назад

      Hello Brian,
      I have the Denon x3500h. It is plenty powerful to drive either one and probably pairs pretty well with wharfedale or elac given they are laid back. To my ears the Denon seems to give a bit of a v shape sound and it crossed over my elac higher than my Yamaha receiver which I didn't like.
      I turn the LFC up for music listening with my JBL studio 580 or the bass is overpowering.
      I do like the Denon but I think you need to be careful what you pair it with.
      I particularly wouldn't pair it with anything bright like Klipsch and probably not svs or jamo from what Randy said about them. Yamaha works well with bright speakers.

    These speakers are great! I have the UBR 62 and they actually smoke my Klipsch rp6000f towers in every category except bass. To be fair, I'm in a small 1 bedroom apt that might be too small for the Klipsch. The soundstage, imaging, and clarity are so nice. They are also way less fatiguing than my Klipsch...But once again the room is too small for the towers. I will eventually get a subwoofer for just some rumbling during movies though. I likey!

    Been a subscriber for a few months. This is the best review, bcoz it saved me a lot of time, and I get the sonic qualities clearly from you. It did contain a lot of slosh and waffling this time round. Description about how great a particular music/song is to you may not translate the same juice/mojo for other people, but some reviewers goes on and on and on and on... The review is about the speaker, the amplifer, the dac, the whatever--so make it so. I'm going to check out the price of the uni-fi ref now. Thank you Sir.

    AWESOME review. I shall have to give them a listen. Bold words saying they beat Kef LS50s in both sound and price. But they are 1000/pair... so now they are Vs other very impressive speakers. B&W 606s2, Goldenear Aeon 2 or 3, Quad s2, Buchardt S300 mk2. While I liked the Elac speakers I have heard... to me ALL of them were missing some "livelyness" that I heard in B&W and Quad; so I can not wait to hear these.

    I bought the Debut F5 to replace my Sony SSCS5 bookshelf speakers. I spent 3 weeks trying to love them, but the Sonys beat them every time I A/B tested them so I returned them. if you want to try an Andrew Jones speaker you don't like, maybe you'll hate the F5 like I did 👍

      Ha. Some of his early speakers were rolled off on top and if you love sparkle they wouldn’t be for you for sure. This doesn’t lack anything on top at all. They debut 6.2 and 5.2 really brought up the top end.

Any thoughts out there? Thank you for the great review! - (happy dbr62 reference owner). Also own B&W's.

    In this video along with a few others with these speakers, you’ve mentioned they require a bit more power than other speakers. The 2 amps you mention in this video are hugely different in power delivery (20w and 160w). I don’t want the thin bass you mentioned from the 20w amp. But I don’t want to have a huge 160w amp on my desk. How much is enough to get full sound out of these? 40w, 60w, 100w? Do you have a recommendation for an amp that would be used exclusively with these speakers?

    • @hobblyjig
      @hobblyjig 2 года назад

      On a live stream he answers that 50w is minimum he would recommend, but 100w would be better. The speakers are 6ohm.

    Great information, thanks. I'm on the fence re: buying this speaker. My only concern is whether my NAD C700 hybrid streaming amp at 80 Watts per channel is enough to bring the woofers to life at low to moderate sound levels. The unity UB 52 is also on my short list. Do you think the UB 52 would be a better fit with the NAD C700? I hope you have time for an answer. Thanks in advance.

      So the encores will have the appearance of more treble presence. I think the encores can almost become fatiguing. Almost. The uni is one of the most balanced speakers I’ve ever heard. If you want some coloration towards the treble the encore is probably the choice. If you want coloration towards the bass the css Criton makes sense. If you want extreme neutrality and realism then the Elac is the choice.

    Randy, would you recommend a sub with these for a 12x12 bedroom? If one is not needed, it would surely justify the extra cost. I’m not a bass head but do love properly executed bass. The way you describe these i think adding a sub may be more trouble than it’s worth in a room that small.
